    3. The maternal DNA comes down from a mother to all her children, but is not passed on by males. As women change their name when they marry, it is not of much use for building genealogy trees. It can show when the female ancestors came from thousands of years ago. The YDNA is passed down from fathers to sons and changes very little over many generations. This can trace the male line back and should only show the same name males. If a known male of the line does not match other males of the line, he was born for different biological father or adopted. If you are interested in using DNA for close genealogy relationships (within the past 5 generations) that cross gender lines or if you are curious about your ethnic percentages, Family Finder is the right choice!** I had both my YDNA and MTDNA tested about 5 years ago and have found just a few partial matches, but proved a suspected 1/2 fourth cousin with perfect match at all 37 markers. I just took the family finder test and found no real close matches, but dozens of 3rd cousins and a few hundred 4th and 5th cousins. Also the family legend has always been Indian blood in both sides of my HOUSE line. Well I have 0% Indian blood, 90% western European and 10% Mid eastern blood. What is the best route to getting a DNA test? Should I go to maternal or paternal or both at one time. Is it really worth it?
