Calico Rock Progress - Aug 2, 1940 – Funeral of Former Sheriff Held Sunday Funeral services for Delbert O. Johnson of Melbourne, former sheriff and collector of Izard County were held at the Baptist Church at Melbourne Sunday at 3:00 p.m., with the Rev Connor Moorehead of Batesville, superintendent of the Batesville District and Rev R. A. Robertson, pastor of the Methodist Church at Melbourne, in charge. One of the largest assemblages ever attending a funeral in this section joined in a fitting tribute to an esteemed neighbor and citizen. The Higginbotham Funeral Service was in charge of funeral arrangements. Interment was in Melbourne Cemetery. Mr Johnson died Friday morning, in a Batesville Hospital, after a week’s illness from Tularemia, caused by a tick bite. Mr Johnson had been sheriff of Izard County since January 1, 1938 and was a candidate for re-nomination. He previously had served two terms, from 1926 to 1930. He was born near Day, in the east part of the county, and lived there on a farm until 1922 when he moved to Melbourne to engage in the automobile business. He served as deputy sheriff under G. R. Landers from 1921 to 1925. He was game warden in this county from 1931 to 1934, and served as county collector for the State Revenue Department from 1934 to 1938. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge, being a past master of the Ash Flat Lodge. Besides being a popular and efficient official, Mr Johnson distinguished himself in his home community and county as one is sympathy with all undertakings for the betterment of his home section and stood ever ready to aid his neighbors. Surviving, are his wife; three sons, Van P. court stenographer of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit, and Delbert Jr., of Melbourne, and Calvin Johnson of Walnut Ridge; two daughters, Miss Vesta Johnson of Melbourne and Mrs Vessie Hively of Wasco, Calif.; a brother, Judd Johnson of Ash Flat and two sisters, Mrs Arch Gleghorn of Day and Mrs Ellen McAnally of Wenatchee, Wash Wife's obit Melbourne Times - Mar 30, 1961 – Mrs Beulah Johnson Services Held Sunday Graveside services were held Sunday, March 26 for Mrs Beulah Majorie (sp) Johnson, wife of the late D. O. Johnson. She was born November 1, 1886 at Wiseman, Arkansas and died March 21, 1961 at Bakersfield, California. She is survived by two sons, Calvin Johnson of Dallas, Tex., and D. Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Vesta Sayer of Belmont, Calif., and Lora D. Hively of Wasco, Calif.; two sisters, Lora Vaughn, Orange, Calif., Thera Wade, Orange, Calif.; 10 grandchildren. Service was conducted by Bro. Sellers and burial was in charge of Crouch Funeral Home.
