    1. Re: [ARIZARD] Mary Luella "Ella" (Redmon) Gault - obituary?? - errors on headstones - disagreements between headstones & funeral home and death records

    3. Pat, Thanks for suggesting checking with a funeral home and findagrave in case I had not already thought of that. I had already thought of it, but still appreciate your suggestion. You are very thoughtful. I'm slow to contact a funeral home because I thought surely the state would have a record of a 1961 death (if she died in Arkansas). However, contacting a funeral home is something I will do. Jim pointed out that Ella's date of birth on the headstone and on the federal census disagree, which some others of us had also noticed. See Vera's photo of the headstone at http://arkansasgravestones.org/view.php?id=534664 and the 1900 Jefferson, Izard Co., AR federal census, which lists her birth date as November 1873. I've seen incorrect birth information on headstones before with my great-grandfather John Wesley Boler's headstone. The funeral home I contacted had the correct birthdate, as did the death certificate that I ordered from the state, but the headstone did not. I don't know for sure what happened in that case, but can guess. Also, my great-great-grandfather Samuel Billingsley's headstone carried the wrong birth year. In John Wesley Boler's case, I suspect a relative made a mistake and provided the wrong date, or maybe the monument works made an error that either wasn't caught or that it was never asked to correct. In Samuel Billingsley's case, the Franklin, Fulton County, AR censuses leading up to the 1880 Franklin, Izard Co., AR federal census were consistent with someone who would have been born in 1789, which agrees with THE BILLINGSLEY FAMILY (BILLINGSLY-BILLINGSLEA) IN AMERICA by Harry Alexander Davis (1850 age 61 enumerated 30 Oct. 1850; 1860 age 72 enumerated 3 June 1860; and 1870 age 81; then in 1880 age 94). Ella's mother was Laura Ann Jones, my great-great-grandmother who married three times, the last time to Lafayette "Lee" Redman. Laura Ann Jones' mother was Ann / Anne (nee __???__) Jones. Research on my Jones line has been plagued with mistranscriptions (for example, Halbrook mistranscribed as Hallsworth), wrong names, nicknames, date issues, spelling issues, a father that is gone from the household by the 1840 Murray Co. GA federal census so I don't know his given name, and a son who is there in the 1840 federal census, but out of the household by the 1850 District 825, Murray Co., GA federal census, so I don't know his name. Thank goodness my great-great-grandmother was in her mother's household in 1850 (and in close proximity to Hiram Montgomery in both the 1840 and 1850 censuses). Also thank goodness Laura Ann Jones' first husband William Franklin "Dock" Montgomery, who died during the Civil War, wrote letters that were preserved by one of her descendants (see http://www.couchgenweb.com/arkansas/izard/hames-montltrs.html). My Joneses have not been easy to research, so I have appreciated the records I've found and clues that knowledgeable descendants and people have provided along the way. I also helped to provide information for them, as well. Lee Anne
