    3. In the book "The History and Families of Izard County, Arkansas" pg 126, it talks about the Hanks/Benbrook families. "Roland Hanks was orphaned when his father William died shortly after the Civil War. William had lost everything when federal troops raided his farm in Southern Arkansas. Dislocated without means, Roland and his brothers set out on foot in the Arkansas Wilderness. On the trail and hungry, they met Phillip Jeffery who befriended the lads and invited them to his home at Mount Olive, then the county seat of Izard County. Roland was 15 yrs old. Roland married Hulda "Jennie" Jeffery, daughter of Jessie Jeffery, a brother to Phillip. They settled at Mount Olive. Primarily a farmer, Roland was self educated and held prominent positions in the community: veterinarian, US Marshal, and Post Master. He was a strong advocate of better roads in the community. He was the last surviving grandparent, dying in 1940 at age 85 yrs. Both are buried at Mount Olive Cemetery. Clarence Shelby Hanks was the twelfth child of 14 born to Roland and Hulda. Zella Roe Benbrook Hanks was the fourth Child of 6 born to Perry and Margie. Shelby took pleasure in farming. In many respects he was ahead of his time adopting advanced farming techniques. He was a carpenter as well. Zella, as well as being a homemaker, was an accomplished pianist. She would practice on the piano every day, and played at the local theater in Calico Rock. Both are buried at Mount Olive. Of the four children born to the union of Shelby and Zella, two survive at this time. Roy (Born September 21, 1922) is now retired and resides at Calico Rock. Eugene (Born Oct. 29, 1923) is retired and lives in West Texas in the city of Midland. Ernest (Born July 7, 1926) is deceased and buried at Mount Olive. All three boys volunteered for service in the military during World War II, and were proud to have served. Roy and Eugene joined and served together in the US Marines from December 1941 to December 1945. Ernest joined the US Army Air Corps. Following discharge, Roy became a supervisor at Allied Signal in Kansas City, MO: Eugene became a Petroleum engineer with Exxon Corp.; and Ernest was self-employed as a CPA in Greely, Co." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Pauline Schwarz Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2012 4:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ARIZARD] Izard County Historian - June and Mary Hi: The article I am looking for in the 1983 edition is: 'Roland and Jennie Jeffery Hanks, Iz Co.
