    3. *This is what it has come to...So sad!* Printed in : Atlanta WW II Round Table - SEPTEMBER 2013 Newsletter THEY STOPPED TEACHING HISTORY IN SCHOOLS AT ALL LEVELS AND HERE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE. Theodore "Dutch" J. Van Kirk was the navigator on the "Enola Gay" when it dropped the bomb at Hiroshima, Japan, and is the last surviving member of the crew. This really happened last week. Dutch was asked to speak at a grammar school this past week. The young teacher introduced him by saying that the speaker was a veteran of World War Eleven (as in WW II). Dutch stood up and walked out of the school without saying a word. End of story.

    3. There's an old saying that those that don't remember history are doomed to repeat it. It's just that, most of the history I was taught in school was wrong. Or, at least it seems like most of it. There's another old maxim that says that the victors write the histories. Way back there were two sides to every story. The vanquished seldom got to tell theirs. The truth was somewhere in the middle of the two stories Then along came newspapers, then radio, then Television. That gave us three versions. The winners, the losers and the way it was told in the media. The truth was still somewhere in the middle. Now, we have the internet. Thousands of versions of the story. I'm not sure the truth is possible to find anymore. There are so many teachers in schools all across our country that cannot teach. They just flat out don't care. There are two members of our extended family that have high school diplomas and are functionaly illiterate. How the heck can an otherwise normal kid go through twelve years of schoool and not be able to read and write at least at a basic level. Because the teachers that had didn't care enough to step in and make sure it got fixed. I also blame the parents. These days school is just a convenient dumping ground for their little monsters. A free babysitting service. As long as the kid is out of their hair they really don't care. We have to teachers in our family and two teacher assistant/substitute teachers. I "KNOW" that they are better educated than the teacher in the story. I made sure of that. One daughter is SEVERLY dyslexic. She graduated from high school in the top five percent of her class. My son is a teacher in a magnet school. His wife is a special ed teacher in another school. Both my daughters have been assitant/substitute teachers. OK, I'll stop my rant. If you can't tell, the state of this countries education system just makes my blood boil.
