    3. You are right Billie about the way history is taught. I have found out from reading old newspapers, out of print books, and old correspondence available through the library and other sources, that history (American at least) is not exactly like it was put down in school books. I am sure you were an excellent teacher, but could only teach from one-sided history books. There are so many versions (as you said) of stories, old and new, that it is hard to fathom exactly how events did occur. I'm sure our great-grandchildren will have an even harder time sorting out the "truths" about current events. There's an old saying that those that don't remember history are doomed to repeat it. It's just that, most of the history I was taught in school was wrong. Or, at least it seems like most of it. There's another old maxim that says that the victors write the histories. Way back there were two sides to every story. The vanquished seldom got to tell theirs. The truth was somewhere in the middle of the two stories Then along came newspapers, then radio, then Television. That gave us three versions. The winners, the losers and the way it was told in the media. The truth was still somewhere in the middle. Now, we have the internet. Thousands of versions of the story. I'm not sure the truth is possible to find anymore. There are so many teachers in schools all across our country that cannot teach. They just flat out don't care. There are two members of our extended family that have high school diplomas and are functionaly illiterate. How the heck can an otherwise normal kid go through twelve years of schoool and not be able to read and write at least at a basic level. Because the teachers that had didn't care enough to step in and make sure it got fixed. I also blame the parents. These days school is just a convenient dumping ground for their little monsters. A free babysitting service. As long as the kid is out of their hair they really don't care. We have to teachers in our family and two teacher assistant/substitute teachers. I "KNOW" that they are better educated than the teacher in the story. I made sure of that. One daughter is SEVERLY dyslexic. She graduated from high school in the top five percent of her class. My son is a teacher in a magnet school. His wife is a special ed teacher in another school. Both my daughters have been assitant/substitute teachers. OK, I'll stop my rant. If you can't tell, the state of this countries education system just makes my blood boil. 3. When I find some esoteric book that maybe no one has heard of I like to transcribe it and post it online. I don't know how many have heard of the "Johnson County War" up in Wyoming in the 1890's. I have a page up that kind of shows the difference from what is told and what is truth. The official story is that cattle rustlers were stealing so many cattle that it was hurting the big ranchers. The ranchers got together and hired a posse to go out and round up the rustlers pretty much dead but alive if necessary. I have newspaper articles that were the official dispatches of the cattelmans association. There was a book written right after the "war" that was all but destroyed. The writers press was destroyed, all available copies were burned. Only a very few copies manged to get out. I found a copy and managed to get it online. It tells all the dirty little secrets [ supposedly ]. If your interested: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wytttp/history/johnson/index.html Right now I'm working on a two volume set written by Jefferson Davis, yes, THAT Jeffeson Davis. Gives a bit different perspective on the (Un)Civil war. Different from the official story told in the school books back in the day.
