lton "Al" Skelton Post a commentPrint By The Wenatchee World Staff Wednesday, November 17, 2010 Alton "Al" Skelton was born July 28, 1935, in Wiseman, AR to Floyd and Matres Skelton. He passed away peacefully on November 8, 2010. Floyd and Matres and their three sons lived in the Wiseman area until 1943, when they moved to Wenatchee. Al completed junior high in East Wenatchee and graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1953. After graduation, Al joined the Marine Corps, where he served with Cold Weather Training Battalion in Bridgeport, CA for two years, then with the 3rd Marine Division in Japan from 1955 to 1957. He married Sherry Rieve in 1955, and they had three children, Sheryl, Jerry and Lowell (Dean). Sherry preceded Al in death in 2003. After his honorary discharge from the Marine Corps, Al worked for various companies, including Stone & Webster Engineering, Graves & Burke, Dolco Packaging and then at the First United Methodist Church for 30 years as a Custodian, until retirement. Al was a people-person and was involved in numerous organizations, including the ! American Legion, 40ET8, S.A.L., VFW, Eagles and Moose. He was also a project person. He always seemed to have several large projects going at the same time. For the past several years, Al and his sweetheart, Darlene, also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and had frequently traveled to Spokane, Walla Walla, Tri-Cities and Tacoma for visits. In addition to his wife, Al was preceded in death by his two brothers, Allen and Charlie. He is survived by his three children, Sheryl (David) Summers of Tacoma, Jerry Skelton of Wenatchee and Lowell Dean (Jennifer) Skelton of Linthicum, MD; six grandchildren, Gregory, Christopher, Paul, Aaron, Jahanna and Sarah; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Jaiden. Services were held Friday, November 12, 2010, at Telford's Chapel of the Valley in East Wenatchee. Memorial donations may be made to: 40ET8 Nurses Training Scholarship, c/o American Legion Post 10, P.O. Box 2242, Wenatchee, WA 98807-2242. Share
