Enjoyed Don's story about John Ghent Pigg. I found another one about Sarah Pigg. Sarah Pigg was born 15 May 1772 in Bishops Storford, Hertfordshire, England D 15 Nov. 1827 (55 years old) in Windsor, Hawkesbury, New South Wales , Australia. Buried in St. Matthews Cenetery. Her parents were John Pigg b.1741 and Mary Sheffield. At age 18, Sarah Pigg was arrested for stealing from Mary Smith's shop. She stole 14 yards of lace, 18 yards lace edging, 3 1/2 yards muslin, 4 pair stockings, 4 lace handkerchiefs, 1 shawl, 9 yards Irish linen, and one muslin apron. She was tried on Hertfordshire, England on March 3, 1790---and found guilty. She was sentenced to death by hanging. C an you believe, DEATH BY HANGING FOR STEALING! Now on with the rest of the story, She wasn't hanged, so in 1792, they decided they needed women in the penal colony of New South Wales--So she along with others had her sentence commuted to "transportation beyond the seas for the term of her natural life" 12 months later, she left Plymouth aboard the ship "Mary Anne"along with 2 other ships Each ship held 200 convicts. They arrived in Sydney Cove on July 9, 1791 After 3 1/2 years Sarah Pigg married Thomas Hoskisson at St. Phillips Church in Sydney by Rev. Johnson, the 1st chaplain of the Colony. Thomas was sentenced at Maidstone, Kent, England, and sentenced for 7 years. He was aboard " William Ann", part of the 3 ships that came with Sarah. They lived together for some time before being married. They lived along Hawkesbury River at Green Hills, Windsor, and had 3 kids. Sarah was pardoned 27 July, 1798 by Gen. Hunter, after recommendations by Rev. Richard Johnson. After Thomas was killed by Aboriginals in 1799, Sarah was left with 3 young kids to raise and a farm to run. In Nov 1799 she was granted 60 acres of land at Petersham Hill--eventually sold it. In 1800 Sarah was pregnant by a convict named John Embrey. She gave birth to a girl. No marriage was recorded On July 4, 1803 she M. Thomas Upton at Hawkesbury Inn . Thomas signed the register, and Rev. Samuel Marsden officiated. They took up farming at Mc Hiller on a gift deed of 25 acres on Hawkesbury River, New South Wales, Australia .
