Jean: Here is what my Gr-granddad told his children and grandchildren. When he was 7 years old his mother and dad split up, and he was given to the Newland family. This would have been about the same time that the other children were bound out in 1839(according to court records). Robert L. was born in 1832, and in 1839 he was 7 years old. He told them that Mr. Newland came and got him and he rode behind him on the horse to the Newland house, and he said he cried all the way. Then when the Newland family moved to Mo. they took him with him, and he also told that when he lived in Mo. with that family, Mr. Newland used him for a prize fighter. And, as far as I know he never did see his mother again. I have a copy of a letter written by him to one of his older sisters after he had got back home to Pineville after the Civil War and he is asking about his mother. He said Mr. Newland was good to him, but Mrs. Newland wasn't. He wasn't allowed to go to school because Mrs. N. said he had to work to pay for his keep (7 years old....) Poor little boy. Anyway, as I found from the Bound out records, the other 5 children were bound out to other people there in Giles Co. One boy, Thomas Smith Guthrie was bound out to his Grandfather, Robert Guthrie, Sr. Grandison was bound out to Charles Beal, and one of the girls was bound out to Thomas Smith Beal, whom I'm sure was a brother to Ann Beal, the mother of these Guthrie children. Also think Charles Beal was a relative, just not sure how close. When I began researching this family I found that just about everything that I found proved his statements to his children and grandchildren to be true. When Robt. L. was 18 years old he was given a horse by Mr. N., and he rode to Izard Co., Ar. where his older brother brother Grandison Graves Guthrie had already come to, and had married Mary Benbrook. One sister, Courtney Jane Guthrie was in Independence Co., Ar. when the 1850 census was taken. She had married a John Hamilton and they had two little girls. It is my feeling that neither Courtney Jane, nor Grandison knew that they were living that close to each other. I have researched this family for years, along with another relative. I've made several trips to Giles Co., Tn. Maybe someone will read this who has more information to offer. Betty Mc
Jean, I have found lots of records like this. Often the families would be poor or not versed in a trade and the children would be sent to someone who could teach them a certain trade. It was an indenture and they stayed with that family for a predetermined time....even if the family move. Sometimes it would be another member of the extended family, sometimes not. It wasn't a punishment or abandonment, just trying to provide a better life for the child. I found one that was really sad. A widowed father in Ireland indentured his son to a family and they came to America. The son served his time and learned his trade and became successful but never saw his father again. I thought that was a touching sacrifice on the father's part. But I think it was quiet common in those days especially with poorer families with large families. Betty, In reading your message, I found the statement that the Newland family brought the youngest Guthrie child with them. Was this a common practice to let your children be hired out to other people, and even move away with them? With distance and transportation being difficult, did they not worry about whether they would see their child again? I knew of indentured servants from England to the States in early days, but not among American's from one family to another. Very interesting. William Walsh was married to Delila/Delia Short in Coffee County, Tennessee. I wondered why his son wound up in Izard County, Arkansas, until I was working on Goodspeeds history of north-east Arkansas. Betty, you probably have seen the Giles Co, TN 1812 Tax list. On it Henry Newland, who married Polly Sims 761, then Jesse Newland 762 and two houses away Robert Guthrie 764. Could be that my John Norwood ( the name is misspelled so I amnot sure) is 752. Dad's grandma, "Fannie" Battles Herron told him that her family came from TN to AR in a covered wagon when she was three years old. So we have a time frame of when the families might have came from TN. She was born in 1872, so this would have been about 1875 or 1876. gen
