    3. Well, it's been one humdinger of a day with the subscriptions on our mailing list! Not sure what has prompted the automatic unsubscribes, but I was even bounced off, as well. If you are seeing this, then you knew how to add yourselves back. I have a whole mailbox full of messages that I need to check out to see who is not back on. (sigh) Hopefully, it will get better! Did you go to your hideyhole? We asked the folks to stay in their basement the night before, and I was up til 3 watching the weather here. We got rain and wind, but the heavier storms just split south of us and went around. Still it's nerve wracking. I had our 'get away' bag, and our medical supply bag, packed up and setting under the basement stairs, in case we had to walk out again. My heart goes out to all those folks that were in the path of the storms last night. That was a monster of a storm and rural areas just don't have warning systems like we do here. I'm not sure if it's for every area, but the Red Cross has a new FREE app that sends a warning through your cel phone, if you can download apps to it. I think it might be nationwide, because I saw it on yahoo news, and I did dial it to see if it worked, and it did. **REDCROSS is what to dial to get instructions to download the app. (you have to dial the two asterisks) If the weather service says there is one in, or near, your area, your cel phone will actually put out an automatic ringtone that sounds like a tornado siren. 3. Good Morning Everyone. Sent this message early this morning, and just got a notice that I had been unsubscribed, so I am sending it again! I am very sorry for the communities in Arkansas who have just gone through another series of tornados, and have lost homes, businesses and lives. I hope you are all ok, and those closest to you. Did anything come through Izard County? Are the storms over now, or are you getting more predictions of bad weather? These things tend to move on over this way, but I haven't seen the news lately. I just pray that this will be the last for all of you for a good while! Jean C

    3. What a heart-breaking story! I remember seeing some documentary about orphan street children in New York at the turn of the century being put on trains and sent to live with farmers in probably the Mid-West. The only reason many took the kids in was to get free labor. No child should ever have been put into situations such as these. I hope your grandfather had a much better life as an adult! This would have been about the same time that the other children were bound out in 1839(according to court records). Robert L. was born in 1832, and in 1839 he was 7 years old. He told them that Mr. Newland came and got him and he rode behind him on the horse to the Newland house, and he said he cried all the way. Then when the Newland family moved to Mo. they took him with him, and he also told that when he lived in Mo. with that family, Mr. Newland used him for a prize fighter. And, as far as I know he never did see his mother again. I have a copy of a letter written by him to one of his older sisters after he had got back home to Pineville after the Civil War and he is asking about his mother. He said Mr. Newland was good to him, but Mrs. Newland wasn't. He wasn't allowed to go to school because Mrs. N. said he had to work to pay for his keep (7 years old....) Poor little boy. Anyway, as I found from the Bound out records, the other 5 children were bound out to other people there in Giles Co. One boy, Thomas Smith Guthrie was bound out to his Grandfather, Robert Guthrie, Sr. Grandison was bound out to Charles Beal, and one of the girls was bound out to Thomas Smith Beal, whom I'm sure was a brother to Ann Beal, the mother of these Guthrie children. Also think Charles Beal was a relative, just not sure how close. When I began researching this family I found that just about everything that I found proved his statements to his children and grandchildren to be true. When Robt. L. was 18 years old he was given a horse by Mr. N., and he rode to Izard Co., Ar. where his older brother brother Grandison Graves Guthrie had already come to, and had married Mary Benbrook. One sister, Courtney Jane Guthrie was in Independence Co., Ar. when the 1850 census was taken. She had married a John Hamilton and they had two little girls. It is my feeling that neither Courtney Jane, nor Grandison knew that they were living that close to each other. I have researched this family for years, along with another relative. I've made several trips to Giles Co., Tn. Maybe someone will read this who has more information to offer.
