Don, all I can say is that all the genealogists I'm in contact with, say there is no proof that Elizabeth was surnamed Lee. That's not to say it can't be true, most everyone does give her name as Lee or ?Lee (meaning unproven). Cole in his biography says she was the daughter of "Lighthorse Harry Lee", but I've heard several Lee researchers deny that. I just don't know for sure, as far as I am aware there has not been a marriage license or bond found. Again, according to Cole's autobiography, "The story of Cole Younger" by Himself - Oak Hills Publishing, 818 N. Forest Avenue, Springfield, MO 65802. He emphatically denies ever having married Belle Shirley. He states he first met her when she was 14 years old, the daughter of John Shirley. The next time he met her was 4 years later and she was the wife of his comrade, Jim Reed, and he met her at the home of Jim's mother. "That was about 3 months before the birth of her daughter, Pearl". She later married Sam Starr. A few years later, he again met her and was warned that she wanted him, but he made sure to avoid her. According to him, he never married anyone. Emily Younger did marry Kitt Rose Feb 20, 1869 in Jackson Co. MO but I have nothing in my file to connect him to his parents. You might search the 1850 and 1860 census for Kitt P Rose, perhaps you would find him with parents. I have him born Jan 1840 so he should be with his parents in 1850 for sure, and possibly 1860. I have his birth state as Kentucky. The following from his autobiography: "One day Belle Reed told me of her troubles, and that night "Aunt Suse" our family servant, warned me "Belle's sure in love with you, Cap'n Cole." she explained. "You better be careful." What that hint I thereafter evaded the wife of my former comrade in arms. Reed was killed a few years later after the robbery of the stage near San Antonia and Belle married again, this time to Tom or Sam Starr. Later she came to Missouri and traveled under the name of Younger, boasted of an intimate acquaintance with me, served time in state prison, and at this time declared that she was my wife, and that the girl Pearl was our child. Her story was a fabrication, inspired undoubtedly by the notoriety it would give her through the Cherokee nation where the name of Younger was widely known whether fortunately or unfortunately" ----- Original Message ----- From: Don Ott To: arizard@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, November 15, 2010 3:09 PM Subject: [ARIZARD] Younger Wilma, You indicated that the wife of Joshua Logan Younger who was Elizabeth Virginia Lee b. 27 Feb 1755, Prince William, VA, d. 15 Sep 1787 KY. had not been connected to the Lee Family. Don, from "The families of Charles Lee and Henry Washington Younger" a Genealogical Sketch by Marley Brant (she has done a lot of research on this family). Charles Lee Younger was born Dec 28, 1783 in Hampshire Co. VA. He was the son of Joshua Logan Younger and Elizabeth ?Lee (the surname Lee has never been proven by the Younger researchers I am in contact with). His brothers were Peter, Isaac, Henry, and Littleton, he also had several half-siblings. He married first to Nancy Toney on April 13, 1798 Family Quest: Marriage Records U.S. 1691-1850, 4-13-1798, Consent of Joshua Younger and Alexander Toney, Peter Younger, Bondsman. He needed his father's consent as he was only 15/16 years of age. Their two children, born in KY were Milton T. and Elizabeth Darlisco. Nancy died in KY Aug 21, 1807. After Nancy's death, he married Sarah Sullivan Purcell in Clark Co., IN on Aug. 21, 1807. Family Quest: Marriage Records U.S. 1691-1850, Charles Younger to Sarah Sullivan Purcell. Charles had a "common-law" relationship with Parmelia Wilson and fathered two children by his slave, Elizabeth Simpson. Charles and Sarah had six children, one of which was Henry Washington, the father of the "Gang" boys. Henry and Bursheba Leighton Fristoe had 14 children. Our information is close to the same, just a few differences here and there. This line of the Younger family originated in Germany, according to Cole in his autobiography. My line of Younger's originated in Scotland, at least that is what I believe. As I said before, I have never researched the Dalton line and know nothing about them. Wilma ----- Original Message ----- From: Don Ott To: arizard@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, November 14, 2010 3:42 PM Subject: Re: [ARIZARD] Dalton Gang Thanks Wilma for your expertise here. You are for sure right about the parents of Adaline Lee Younger were Charles Lee Younger and Parmelia Dorcus Wilson. I should have said that he was from the Cole Younger Outlaw Family, in fact Cole Younger the Gunslinger was his grandson. I have seen Charles Lee also called "Cole" but I don't know if that is correct. As I understand the family: Charles Lee Younger b. 28 Dec 1779 Hampshire, VA [son of Joshua Logan Younger and Elizabeth (Lee) Younger], d. 12 Nov 1854 Osceola, St. Clair, MO. He had four Companions, probably only married to one of them. Companion # 1 Parmelia Dorcus Wilson b. ca 1779 Cass, MO. They had 9 children. One of their children was Adeline Lee Younger b. ca 1836 who married James Lewis Dalton and they were the parents of the Dalton Gang. Companion # 2 Nancy Toney. They had 2 Children Companion # 3 Sarah Sullivan Purcell b. ca 1788 Clay, MO. They married about 1798 and had 6 children. Among their children was Col. Henry Washington Younger b. ca 1810 Lincoln, KY. Ca.1830 he married Bursheba Leighton Fristo b. 6 Jun 1877 TN. They were the parents of three of the James-Younger Gang, Coleman "Cole", James Henry "Jim" and Robert Erwin "Bob" Younger. They joined Jesse and Frank James. ( John Harrison Younger was killed by a Pinkerton Agent in Oceola Mo. in 1873. I don't know if he was involved in this group or not.) Their ill fated bank robbery in Northfield Mn. put an end to the Younger brothers participation and the James brothers got away. Colonel Henry Washington Younger was assassinated in Harrisonville MO. Thanks Wilma for your expertise here. Companion #4 Elizabeth Simpson. They had two children. Hi, A quick note. I don't have time right now to study page by page but have a hint or two. Back in that time it was customary to write a double s in a word or name as p. So session looked like sepion. The Ross family name appeared as Rop. The Gault name Is the correct spelling there. I even found that my mother's name Elsie had been spelled Elzy. And no, I have no pictures, inside or out, but would hope there are some in existence somewhere. I have a vague memory of a single large dark room with some sort of lamp hanging from the ceiling. It's "rough". I'll put the "polish" on it when I'm finished with the transcription. I wanted to ask if anyone [ everyone ] could look it over and see that I have the names right so far. It seems there are two kinds of penmanship in this world. Ornate but nearly undecipherable and a scribble [ mines the latter ]. This isn't so bad, but the changes in style over the years make it hard to decipher some characters. I would like to make sure I get the names right. *<]:o) Also, if anyone has any pictures of the church or people involved that they would like to submit to go along with the page it would be a nice addition. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~arizartp/prosperity_test1.html -- "A good moral character is the first essential in a man." Your probably right. After going back and taking another look at the original it looks like GAULT is probably the spelling. After reading several pages of a persons handwriting you sometimes get a better idea of their style. As I've progressed through this I've found many places where I interpreted something wrong and had to change it. Some of our ancestors had better handwriting than some others. I've often wondered why census takers always seem to have the worst. *<]:oD Good catch. Thank you for the correction. I won't get it uploaded for a while but I will get the change made. It was down for a while, I got a notification they were doing some upgrades on the entire system. I've not been on much since then, so I don't know how long the site was offline. gen
Billie, I don't understand all that you are doing, but it sounds good. It was interesting reading and I saw some names that were familiar to me. In section 9, it lists 3 elders, one was W.A. Garalt. I think this should be W.A. Gault. If so, he was my great grandfather, William A. Gault b 1818 d. 1899. m Sarah Gleghorn. Billie, I admire you for transcribing the church records. I've "interpreted" several postcards, poems of my great-great-grandfather (1825-1917) and, fortunately, began doing so when my mother (1896-1993) was able to help. Yes, people in that time frame made the "double s" to look like a "p" - and my handwriting booklet was helpful. Good luck to you with this worthwhile project and for bringing it forward for all of us. Peggy Peggy {KING} TRUESDELL
