I just subscribed to this mailing list, and I am really impressed how "busy" it is and have been enjoying the friendly "off subjects" going on. My ggrandparents were William Harmon and Pheba (Teba) Farris. I found this early on in Boone county. I believe the town of Harmon may have been named after him. They had at least 11 children. My grandpa William Anderson Harmon was b 4 June 1866 b unk but up in one of the counties around Boone. He married first Sarah Elizabeth Martin in Boone Co. He had five children from a few months to 13 yrs when he married 1901 my grandmother, Greta Elizabeth Richardson b 1879 prob Boone cty. His first wife "Elizabeth" either died in childbirth or very shortly thereafter. My grandparents moved to Oklahoma shortly after their marriage, and settled in SW Oklahoma. We know that a few of my grandpa's siblings came with them but many did not. I have no information on my ggrandparents Harmon accept that the censuses show that he was b in TN and she in KY. My grandmother's lineage is Richardsons & Satterfields of Searcy/Stone county. Ryals of Boone, Bradshaws and others. I have much info on grandma's lineage but not the Harmons/Farrises. I've never had much info on my Harmon ggrandparents Harmon especially before they moved from KY and TN. I've heard that there are some Harmons in the counties near Boone/Carroll/Marion counties. Thank you and sorry for the length of this email. Regards, Judy Curtis Jackson

Hi everybody! I was tooling around in Heritage Quest at the Library looking for my (Gillihan's, as always). I found a book called "Virginia Colonial Militia 1651-1776. It is mostly about years of the war between Great Gritain and France and Dunsmore's War, and I did indeed find a Gillihan, but had already seen it in another book. It seems that I remember someone talking about the "Pigg" family. That name kind of stands out and I happened to notice the following: Given land in Virginia for services rendered: Henry Pigg, Private in 2nd VA Regiment of Regulars in late war between Great Britain and France. He was was granted (didn't say how many acres) in Prince Edward County, VA on Jan. 17, 1780. I looked it up on FamilySearch and found him listed as: Henry Pigg, born abt 1684 in Old Rappa County, VA. Listed his father as John and his mother as Elizabeth (no last name) Maybe someone's ancestor??? Janice Reed

Thanks Pat. Ed just came to door and said the cornbread and turnips are done .What else you won't, and I told him that is enough for me. Hey gal, I'd be there in a minute. The cornbread is fine - but I love turnips - you can't believe how many this old gal cooks (when she can find them). Half the time there are none in the store. I've even had the produce man argue that he has turnips - when I ask him to show them to me - they will be parsnips or maybe rutabagas or some such. No wonder our kids don't eat veggies like we did - they've never heard of them. Tell Ed big "howdy" and hope to see you both in the spring. Luv to both of you, Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "Junebug" <junebug@centurytel.net> To: <arizard@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 06, 2011 9:56 AM Subject: Re: [ARIZARD] Morning"off subject" > Thanks Pat. Junebug what a wonderful report. I am so happy and thankful for both you and Ed. Another BIG prayer answered. Thank you Lord. You will overcome that computer. I'm sure you are doing very well with it. Each one has its on rotten ways of bringing us to our knees at times. Just like kids, each one is different. Morning everyone. kinda late for coffee with you. I have done had my second cup. My motor isn't running to fast this morning. may need more antifreeze to thaw it out. Ha! Well we got a good report from Ed's PET scan yesterday. It didn't show any thing .This Oct he goes back for another and if ok he will probably dismissed after 5 yrs. Oh! well its winter that is normal. I am still confused on this computer, but maybe I will learn. It is a lot faster, and more on it. Maybe I can open attach. that I couldn't before. The combo scanner, and printer keeps me confused too. Think my older printer make better pictures than this one. be patient with me for I know I will goof up. Take care and keep all our service folks safe and sound, and send them all home soon. Love June
Well, we'll just get on trusty 'Google' and print us out a map and see if we can get there! We've been through Wichita but didn't get out into the town--going on north when we went through on our way to Colorado Springs. Better bring in some firewood--sounds as if we are going to get some colder weather in the next 3-4 days! I love my picture of Lafferrty Castle you sent me. Everytime I run across something good, I am so excited. Have you run into anything new on our Lafferty family lately? One of my grandsons inherited my love for history, too---he is working towards being a teacher of it. I love to read the stories people send in, and, Gen, I am enjoying your recipes! Don, If you are a Revolutionary War buff have you tried the applications on Heirtage Quest? Also another great site if you don't know of it is http://www.southerncampaign.org/pen/ I love the old records. I never gain anything searching them because I get caught up in reading them and forget what I was looking for. :) Mary --- On Mon, 1/3/11, Don Ott <dott@centurytel.net> wrote: From: Don Ott <dott@centurytel.net> Subject: [ARIZARD] Off Subject, Revolutionary War To: arizard@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, January 3, 2011, 7:15 PM Was reviewing some early ancestors today and their participation in the Revolutionary War. In trying to put some time lines on some events, I know I almost caused a revolt recently when talking about the Pigg Family and their persecution for drinking the forbidden tea. Will try to not start another revolt. This time I was researching James Sage, a 24 year old British baker for His Majesty, King George III, who decided to come to America, arriving on 23 Jul 1773. The war started in about 1775. James Sage married Lovice Ott on 25 December 1779. By about 1780 the American Continental Army was suffering numerous losses and there were many soldiers who deserted and the situation looked really bad. The British occupied New York City, Lord Cornwallis had captured Charleston SC, Richmond VA and was building a major military fort at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. A desperate request for assistance by Gen. George Washington to the French, resulted in the French landing 6,000 troops to Rhode Island in May 1781.They also had sent a fleet of 24 ships which was doing interdiction on the high seas of British supply ships etc. General George Washington met with Comte de Rochambeau, the French commander to discuss strategy. Washington wanted to attack New York City but Comte de Rochambeau was apprehensive about attacking such a well fortified position, he lacked confidence in the Continental Army. The French suggested marching south to meet General Cornwallis in Virginia. From May to August 1781, discussions continued and finally Washington acquiesced to fight the war the French way on 22 Aug 1871. The struggling American Continental Army and the French force left White Plains, New York for Virginia arriving in early September 1781. At the same time the combined armies marched south, the French Navy engaged the British Navy at the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay defeating them and sending them back to New York, leaving General Cornwallis without supplies or transportation to escape. After five days of bombarding General Cornwallis's fortified positions in Yorktown the American and French attack and overwhelmed Cornwallis's forces and on 19 October 1781 the British Commander had no option but to surrender. News of the surrender reached King George III on 25 Nov 1781, sending shock waves through out England. Although King George wanted to continue the battle, the surrender forced Prime Minister Lord North to resign in Mar 1782. The replacement English Government started the peace process which ended in the signing of "The Treaty of Paris" in September 1783, which granted independence to the American Colonies. At the Siege of Yorktown, the British had about 9,700 troops, the French and American combined force was about 17,000. The French Fleet had 24 ships and the British fleet had 19 ships. The Americans report 20 deaths and 56 wounded. The French reported 52 dead and 134 wounded. The British reported 800 dead and wounded. Our thanks to the French.
