The thing about losing everything because of a computer crash has prompted me to try to do something about that. I’ve been really, really fortunate in that I’ve only had one such incident – an electrical surge killed my hard drive a couple of years ago. Lucky for me I had backed up my files about a month previously, so I didn’t lose too much work. A friend told me about a website that automatically backs up your file every day. With this service, you won’t lose everything if something dire happens, tornado, fire, crash, or hacker, or even electrical surge or theft – whatever the cause. Your “stuff” will be saved online and can be retrieved intact. The address is www.carbonite.com and the cost seems reasonable to me. It is $60 a year – which is only $5 a month, and you can relax and not worry about losing your family files or photos. The only reason I’m “hawking” this is to hopefully prevent anyone losing their work. Even ing everyone. This is the first that i've been on the computer today. You gals get up way earlier that me. I hope that everyone including our service men and women and shut ins were able to be with someone for the day, I didn't cook today. My brothers (2) came up and brought us already prepared turkey dinners with all of the trimings including one salmon for brother who doesn't eat birds of any kind. It was a nice dinner and we (even me) watched 2 football games before they left and then I fell asleep for a couple of hours. I just feel so blessed with family and friends today. I'm thankful that my vision is back to normal. Just need to get new glasses when i'm finished with the retina specialist. mean while I still have my old glasses that are held together with dental floss an clear tape. Hi List, This came to me from another list and I thought I would pass this info along, I know several of you have been Hacked . Ellen ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 2:37 PM Subject: [Williams] Email precautions To: williams <[email protected]> In light of the fact that there has been so many problems on Mailing Lists because of hijacked email accounts, I think it is important to pass on some further info to help insure that people are taking steps to secure their own computers. A few basic security measures can keep your computer safe and in good working condition if followed regularly. First and most important of all is to make sure that you have an anti-virus program on your computer, and that it is set to scan both your incoming and outgoing emails. A quick scan of incoming emails can keep any trojans or viruses from coming in via an email; and by scanning all of your outgoing emails, it ensures that you are not sending either of the same out to unsuspecting recipients of your messages. Make sure that any anti-virus program you use is set to do regular updates of their virus database, and to allow it to do regular scans of your computer, which I suggest be at least daily. Some anti-virus software includes real-time scanning and is always on the alert blocking anything from getting onto your computer, such as by visiting an infected website. I have had at least one person tell me that they didn't know they should have their email scanned, and I've had others tell me that they didn't realize that anti-virus programs needed to be updated, they thought that once they had it on their computer that they were safe. Some people apparently also seem to be unaware that if you have an anti-virus program which is one you've bought through a paid subscription, that you must pay for it at least yearly in order for it to work; having a for fee anti-virus program on your computer without keeping up the payments is useless because it doesn't download new virus definitions and it is totally useless. If you have a free anti-virus program, make sure that you learn how to use and to set it to do what it needs to in order to protect your computer. Second, get good anti-malware software, and to use it regularly. If you don't have one, a suggestion is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, a free download which works very well on most systems. Have it scan your computer at least every other day or whenever you suspect there is something wrong. Here is a link to the site to get the free edition: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ A further suggestion for extra measure is to get Spybot-Search and Destroy, a free anti-virus and anti-malware software which has been around for a number of years and is a terrific system to keep your computer clean. You must manually update it, but it is easy to do once you install it and follow the instructions on which site to choose to download the updates. It is available from many places, but here is one if you aren't sure how to find it: http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html Another thing that everyone needs to remember is that if you are ever hacked, please take the time to change your passwords; and always choose something that is not easily found such as names of loved ones or birthdates of close family members, I can't tell you how many people use simple ones like "password", as if that's not one of the first ones that hackers try. Don't continue to make things easy for a hacker to get into your account, the best passwords are ones that use a combination of letters and numbers; there are also programs that one can use to generate passwords, but whatever you use, always change it if your email account gets hijacked. None of these programs are difficult to use, so you really don't have to be very computer savvy if you add them to your system.
