    3. When I find some esoteric book that maybe no one has heard of I like to transcribe it and post it online. I don't know how many have heard of the "Johnson County War" up in Wyoming in the 1890's. I have a page up that kind of shows the difference from what is told and what is truth. The official story is that cattle rustlers were stealing so many cattle that it was hurting the big ranchers. The ranchers got together and hired a posse to go out and round up the rustlers pretty much dead but alive if necessary. I have newspaper articles that were the official dispatches of the cattelmans association. There was a book written right after the "war" that was all but destroyed. The writers press was destroyed, all available copies were burned. Only a very few copies manged to get out. I found a copy and managed to get it online. It tells all the dirty little secrets [ supposedly ]. If your interested: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wytttp/history/johnson/index.html Right now I'm working on a two volume set written by Jefferson Davis, yes, THAT Jeffeson Davis. Gives a bit different perspective on the (Un)Civil war. Different from the official story told in the school books back in the day. 3. You are right Billie about the way history is taught. I have found out from reading old newspapers, out of print books, and old correspondence available through the library and other sources, that history (American at least) is not exactly like it was put down in school books. I am sure you were an excellent teacher, but could only teach from one-sided history books. There are so many versions (as you said) of stories, old and new, that it is hard to fathom exactly how events did occur. I'm sure our great-grandchildren will have an even harder time sorting out the "truths" about current events. 1. [ARIZARD] Matthew Dixon
    2. Wilma Norton
    3. I've been working on this Dixon line for a couple of days now, and I have to admit that it is very puzzling. According to FAG and others on this list, Matthew was born ca. 1776. Yet in the 1860 census he is living with Alice Cooper, a daughter of his according to FAG, and is 77 years old. And then in 1870 census, I find him living with Hilliard, a son, and he is 87 years old. This would seem to give a birth year of ca. 1783. I've searched and cannot find him in the 1850 census anywhere. Possibly he was in the process of traveling from TN to AR at that time? I did find a Matthew Dixon in 1830 Bedford, TN census, born between 1781 and 1790, this could be him. Or not. I've also found Matthew Dixon in 1790, 1800, 1810 census in Pendleton Dist. SC. Possibly this could be "our" Matthew Dixon if he was the son of Matthew Dixon. Has anyone determined who his father was? I also found a Matthew Dixon who was a Rev. War soldier. This would have to be Matthew, Sr. In 1820 they were living in Bedford, TN and he had a male and female 45 and up living with him, possibly his parents. Also it shows 2 persons in the household were not native born, and not naturalized. His parents? Any ideas of where they were from? By 1830 census, the elderly couple is no longer enumerated, and I couldn't find any Matthew that would fit the right age, in 1840 or 1850. Also on FAG the contributor (not named) stated that Alice Dixon married Peyton Cooper and her sister, Kizziah married Allen Cooper, Peyton's brother. Anybody else believe this to be true? Wilma

    3. Thank you, George, for reminding me of how much help the Germanna website has been to me. My wife's g- grandmother was a Holtzclaw and a descendant of Hans Jacob Holtzklau/Holtzclaw of the original 1714 Germanna group. My uncle Ewell Shelby Rector was a descendant of Hans Jacob Richter/Rector of the same group.
