Was Independence County part of Indian Territory? Does anywhere know where I might find a map of this area on the internet? Debbie
Hi Debbie: There might have been some Native Americans in Independence County but it was not part of Indian Territory. Early in the Counties settlement, Indians occupied one side of the White River and the pioneers the other. Indian Territory was mainly the North Eastern part of Oklahoma. This is where the trail of tears march ended and the five "civilized tribes" were settled. I believe part of the march came through Independence County. Someone with a better grasp of County history may be better able to answer that question. There are many web sites and even a rootsweb list dedicated to I.T. Do a general search with any search engine. I would start with rootsweb.
