    3. Thanks to many of you, I have just about wrapped up the Anderson segment of my research in IndCo. The Thornton line is next and I really need a lot of help or advise on where to look. Here are the highlights: Samuel G. & Mary Jane (Claughton) Thornton and their their first six children moved from Franklin Co., VA during early 1858 and settled somewhere near Cord, probably a little NW. They purchased land and set up farming. The 7th, my ggrandmother, Ellen Cromwell Thornton, was born on their farm near Cord. They were burned out by bushwhackers during 1862 or early 1863 and fled on foot to MO. Sam died there on 1 Aug 1872. Most of the children remained in MO and I have good records for them. Mary Jane had two boys, probably after Sam's death, with a CSA soldier from TN that she met during the journey north and nursed back to health: William W. and Joseph S. Thornton. They were given the Thornton name since she was not married to their father. At some point, Mary Jane took the two boys and returned to AR and successfully reclaimed their land. An unverified record lists Mary Jane as having died in Cord during 1901. Another letter says she was buried at that same cemetery as Grandpa Anderson. That would be Hopewell, but there is no readable marker for either. She had also either remarried or just took the name BRUNSON. That could have been the soldier's surname. The return AR may not have been until the early 1880's. I can find nothing on the census records, except for William W. Thornton. He was living near Cord during the 1900 census with his wife and their first 4 of 5 children (5th born 1902). All names and ages match an 80 year old letter. Ellen married my ggrandfather, John W. Anderson, at the Hopewell Church in Cord on July 27, 1879. I have good records for her from that point forward. I have a very old letter that says Joseph purchased his marriage license in Batesville and his wife's name was "Jenera." Does anyone have access to marriage license records? Or, land records so I can determine where the farm was located (was sold during early 1900's). I have a letter describing it after a 1907 visit. But, it does not tell me anything except that it was a small farm and the rebuilt cabin was abanded. Also, I can't find anything about the Brunson name. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thurman Anderson
