Ar Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ar/Independence/10095 Surname: COCHRAN, GEE, TATE, NELSON, POLSTON ------------------------- At least three separate COCHRAN (various spellings) families settled in Independence County in the 1830s and acquired federal land in Black River (now Marshall?) Twp. The heads of household were James H., Hugh Edward and John G. COCHRAN - all born 1790 to 1800. I have compiled information on all of these families. However, I primarily am interested in James H. COCHRAN, as I suspect that he may be my ancestor. A VERY tentative listing of his children includes: 1. William COUGHRAN, b. c1821 (per military record). 2. Louisa M. COCHRAN, b. 1822 in GA; d. 1879 in Bosque Co., TX; md. Miles Maryland GEE, 1841 in Independence Co. <<<<<< my ancestors 3. Mary COCHRAN, b. c1825 in GA; md. Basell (Basil-Boswell) NELSON, 1843 in Independence Co. 4. Christine Ann Jane COUGHRON, b. c1826 in GA; md. Isaac A. TATE, 1849 in Independence Co. 5. Adaline CAUGHRAN, b. c1828 in AR (?); md. Ambrose NELSON, 1842 in Independence Co. 6. (Male) COCHRAN. 7. Elizabeth COHORN; md. Martin NELSON, 1851 in Independence Co. 8. (Male) COCHRAN. I believe James H. COCHRAN md/2 Nancy POUSTON (POLSTON), 1846 in Independence Co. Isaac A. TATE was the son of William C. TATE. The NELSON boys are all supposed to be sons of Reuben and Nancy NELSON. Although the COCHRANS lived in Black River Twp., these other families apparently did not. I would love to exchange notes with anyone researching these surnames in Independence County!
