    1. Re: [ARINDEPE] Question About Independence Co. History
    2. Bob Foster
    3. Hi Larry, As I said, I have not been researching Independence Co. for very long, but one of the reasons I am is your Milly/Millie Foster (b. MS) and the Harrison Foster (b. AR) found in the household of John and Martha Foster on the 1850 census. If you look at the 1850 Searcy Co. census you'll also find a Milly and Harrison Foster in the household of Henry Forrester (b. VA). The young boy named Joseph is my great-great-grandfather. The name changes to Foster on the 1860 Madison Co. census. I could perhaps accept two Milly Fosters as a coincidence, but two Harrisons? That is such an unusual given name that I feel it's almost a certainty that these Fosters are all related. But how? That's the stumper. They all seem to be born in different states. And you'll notice that the Harrison Foster in Searcy was born right around the time that the Harrison Foster who married Elizabeth Speed died. Was he named in his honor? On the 1870, 1880 and 1910 censuses my ancestor Joseph Foster lists his birthplace as Mississippi. On other censuses it's Arkansas. Despite years of looking, I have never been able to figure out the MS connection. Then I come across your Millie born in MS. It makes me wonder. I've checked the Familysearch library and I see that Independence Co. still has all of its old records intact. That's truly amzing. Most of the counties my ancestors lived in had courthouse fires after the Civil War. Have you ever checked the old probate, court and land records for possible clues? 2. Bob Foster
    3. Does anyone on this list know if there was a natural disaster, large accident, act of violence or illness that occurred in Independence Co. around 1859? I have not been doing research in my family ties in Independence Co. for very long, but I have uncovered a possible pattern of deaths in interconnected families that leads me think that something happened in 1859/60. A number of fairly young men, all heads of families, seem to have died at approximately the same time. I do not know what their occupations were (I suspect they were farmers, but perhaps not) so I don't know if there was a particular occupational hazard that existed in this county at that time. If no one can answer this question, can someone recommend a good local history book that I could consult? Thanks, Bob in VA

    2. Bob Foster
    3. The 1840 census index I consulted at my local college library shows the following Fosters in Izard Co., but I feel this is an error and should actually read Independence Co. One reaon for my thinking this is that there is no Ruddle Twp. in Izard, but there is in Independence. Can anyone verify this? In any case these are the Fosters: John, p. 205, Lafayette Twp. John W., p. 206, Van Buren Twp. William, p, 208, Ruddle Twp. James, p. 209, Ruddle Twp. Nancy, p. 209, Ruddle Twp. Thomas, p. 209, Ruddle Twp. Does anyone know anything about these people? I haven't had a chance to examine the actual census (it would be nice to see who their neighbors were), because my library only has the index. I'll need to go to the State Library to view the microfilm to do that. I'm especially interested in the naming patterns of Nancy and Milly that I've found on other places online. Are these Fosters in Indepenedence Co. related to the family of Henry Forrester, b. VA on the 1850 Searcy Co., census? On this census there is a 29 year old Nancy Foster b. TN in his household as well as a Milly Foster b. about 1846 in AR. By 1860 Henry is out of the picture (dead I presume) and the remannats of this family can be found in Madison and Carroll Co., AR. In those censuses the family name is spelled Foster. I descend from the Joseph Forrester/Foster whom I believe is a son of Nancy Foster. I see that some research has been done on the early Fosters in Independence Co. but it appears that no one has been able to push this line backwards. I'd like to make contact with any descendants and compare notes. I have a hunch that my Henry Foster in Searcy is related to the Fosters in Independence on the 1840 census. Bob in VA

I found an account of him in an online transcript of Arkansas biographies, and in it was this nugget: <Wesley Bell, who was a native of South Carolina, was born in 1808; he was of English descent, and was a mechanic and farmer. When a young man he removed from South Carolina to Alabama, where he married and resided until about 1840, when he located in the western part of Tennessee, subsequently, on account of ill health, removing to Arkansas, where he died in 1857. His wife, who was also a native of South Carolina, was born in 1812, and died about 1847. > I pursued these leads -- found a listing of a marriage of Wesley Bell and Elizabeth Bell [presumably her maiden name] in Limestone County, Alabama on 4 Sep 1826. I then found the couple in the 1850 Madison county (TN) census. I feel confident that this is the correct couple as several of the children are ones I already knew of and had further info.(Included names and state of birth). I believe Westly and family moved to Independence County sometime between 1850 (the census) and 1857 (the known or presumed year of his death); by 1860, the remains of the family are in Independence County. (I also understand that Elizabeth, his first wife, died in 1847, and apparently he remarried -- to Annie, who is listed as head of household in 1860 with several of the children still at home.) My question: where is Wesley Bell buried (I've not found him in the transcribed records online)? Is Elizabeth buried with him? Would love to have more details. Thanks.
