    2. Teri, I really don't know too much about Independence Co., Ark. I was born in Batesville, Ark. but my parents left there when I was about 9 or 10. I go back every year for families reunion. I can get around in the County if I have a map. Hope you can find what you are looking for. I did look in the Sharp Co Cem. and Izard Co. Cemetery books but found nothing. Myrvin

    1. Re: [AR IND.] Location of Barren Township in Independence Co., Arkansas
    2. Myrvin, Thanks for checking for me! I really don't know. I assume that he was probably buried close to home- probably a single grave. They only came to Ark in about 1857-8,( according to birth places of children on 1860 census) and he died about 10 years later May 1867) . I have often wondered if they came in a caravan. I found this reference in my Family of Alexander Carter book_ ( Carroll Co TN Carter's) "Nancy Newton Carter m. James Barlow Ward, A cumberland Presbyterian minister. In 1858 , they moved with their family to Arkansas in the caravan of Captain Leslie and settled in what was then Wiley's Cove in Independence County. They remeained in Arkansas and some of their descendants still live there." Is this Wiley's Cove near Cuna Post office in Barren township??? Is there a Presbyterian Church in this area of Ind. Co??? Thanks for any help you can give! Teri

    2. HI, I';m also trying to locate Barren Township! Joseph Luckey and his family are on the 1860 census in Barren town ship, post office Cuna. He purchase land in the NENW, 26 section 15-N section 6-W range, No , 5th PM. - Whereever that is!!! He died in May of 1867 and is buried there somewhere. His wife brought the family back to her home in Gibson Co TN in a covered wagon. 3. Barren Township is north of Batesville, and borders Sharp County to the north. Part of the town of Cave City is in Barren Township, which also comprised the area of Curia, Gray's Chapel, Mt. Tabor, and other locations with Methodist churches. Which Jordan line are you researching? Have some info on Russell Jordan, but he lived at Maxville, I believe, which was in Sharp County, probably Sullivan Township. 3. You said the magic word in the subject line but not the message. In Arkansas and many other states, all counties are divided into sub districts. They are called a "Township" but have no relationship to any city or town. In Arkansas, all old Federal census reports were prepared by township (a sub district like a mini county within a county). You may want to zero in on county records, federal census or federal land records for Barren Township. Gook luck! Thurman. 3. Hi Folks! I recently ran across an very interesting article in the Jackson Historical Society's quarterly that dealt with Capt. Thomas Benton Stallings, a steamboat captain on the White River during the post-war period. However, the article is replete with names of places and people concerned with the trade along the White River. I imagine that many of you will find mentions of your relations in it. I have posted it in PDF form on my web site. The URL is listed below. -- Robert W. King I'm an ingenieur, NOT a bloody locomotive driver! 3. Georgiana, Your dates are fairly recent. Odds are very high that Arkansas (Department of Health, Vital Statistics) will have both birth and death certificates for all of those mentioned. AR centralized all state records as of Feb 1, 1914. You have to go to the country involved for anything prior to that. Death certificates include date and place of birth, parent's names, mother's maiden name, occupation, place of burial and other data. Birth certificates are not always available. Sometimes, there was no one available to fill out the form when a baby was born at home and there was no medical doctor involved. Death certificates are almost 100%. The information, of course, is not always accurate. It is based on the memory of the family member providing the information to the official that filled out the form. Cost is currently $4 for a duplicate death certificate and $5 for a birth certificate. Little Rock has a pretty good web site where you can download the forms required to order copies. Takes 2 to 4 weeks, especially when you are unsure of dates. Good luck. E. T.
