    1. [AR IND.] KILLMAN surname
    2. Mary Henderson
    3. Hi! I'm wondering if anyone has any information about the KILLMAN surname in Independence Co., AR. I'm looking for a David (possibly James David) KILLMAN b. abt 1851. He was reportedly "from" Hickory Valley, AR - not sure if that means he was born there or not. Other AR connections for the KILLMAN surname include: Jane (Jincey/Jinsey) HOPPER KILLMAN who died 7-18-1872 in White Co. Her husband was James KILLMAN, but he died 1848 in Cumberland, KY. Jinsey and James KILLMAN's daughter, Irena (Irenia) KILLMAN married a George W. SCOTT, and I show Irena as dying 10-5-1875 and being buried in the Fredonia Cemetery in White, AR. Also, Jinsey and James KILLMAN's son, Henry KILLMAN d. 1886/1887 in White Co. I also show a Thomas Lee KILLMAN b. 7-13-1864 in AR, but don't know what county. His parents were Henry KILLMAN and Elizabeth COX. Also a Francis Marion KILLMAN b. 1-29-1864 in AR, county unknown. His parents were Robert KILLMAN and Rebecca. Would love any suggestions. Thanks! Mary

    1. [AR IND.] Henry Galloway/Ida (Hoyt) Galloway - Fetzer Cemetery???
    2. Hoping someone can help me. Trying to locate Henry and Ida Galloway and so far batting zero. My Great Aunt (Ida's granddaughter) said that Ida and Henry were buried in the Galloway Family Graveyard, on his own land, however, the Newark Journal of 1908 said Henry was buried in Fetzer Cemetery (poss Ida too?). Not sure if these places are one in the same or conflicting information. Either way, have been unable to locate either cemetery and details are sketchy at best. The primary objective is to find an accurate date of when Ida died. Ida M. Hoyt was Henry Galloway's second wife. Henry Clay Galloway married Ida M. Hoyt in Independence County 02 August 1882 after his first wife (Elizabeth Hogan) died after 1880. I know they had several children together (the last one, Mable born in 1895). I cannot find where Ida is buried or when she died. My best guess is that Ida died between 1895 and 1900. Henry shows up in the 1900 Polk Co. Census with some of the children and listing himself as "Widower". Henry died in 1908. Any help much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Glenn Hoyt [email protected]

    3. I did have a map of the cemeteries in that area, but I can't seem to lay my hands on it right now. I do know that it's possible the Galloway Cemetery and Fetzer Cemetery are one and the same. The families lived around the same area--off Hwy 122 going from Newark to Cord. There is also a Galloway Road and a Fetzer Road along Hwy 122. 1. [AR IND.] An appeal to Evening Shade/Batesville area residents
    2. Robin Hoff Kaspar
    3. When my mother and I visited a couple of years ago, she told me about her grandfather, P.J. (Preston) Young, a brickmason. She remembers as a child (in the 30s) traveling from Jonesboro to E.S. to visit cousins and having to pull over on the side of the road for someone to throw up. There was one of those little stone bridges there and she saw a placard stating that it was built by "P.J. Young and Sons." Of course, she can't remember now exactly where it was, so we didn't try to look. She also had me running all over Batesville looking for a stone church that had a similar placard; she said she saw it on a visit in the early 90s. We couldn't find it. She thought it was the Baptist Church (on Main?) and we even went into the office and asked if anyone knew about it to no avail. If such placards survive, I would dearly love to have a picture. If you live in the area and maybe know an oldtimer that might have knowledge of such, could you contact me? Thanks so much. 3. Strongly suggest that others explore what's available. Almost embarrassed that I did now know about it before. Found land records for a lot of relatives in AR and MO. All but one (IndepCo) checked out. It's taxpayer funded and thus free. You can print a copy of the original "deed" signed by the US president (also free). Another recent find is Maptech MapServer. Instead of entering the name of a town/city, you can enter the name of an old cemetery, school or whatever and probably get it. 1. RE: [AR IND.] Land Records
    2. Robin Hoff Kaspar
    3. Although the URL is actually www.glorecords.blm.gov this is a great idea. I tried it today and actually came up with an extra 80 acres that my gg-grandfather had purchased in 1860. The transcriber misread the name (although it was easy for me to recognize on the original document) so these parcels didn't come up in my name search. This is also a great resource to use in conjunction with the census. If you can't find your ancestor through a name search in the land records but have located them in the 1860 census or thereabouts (I found some land purchases dated after 1900), search on some of the names of those enumerated around them. If you find any of them, go back and search on the section, township and range and see if anything pops up (although I would leave out the section because that might narrow the search too much). Ok, you've found your ancestor in the land records now, but what do you do with this legal description of the land? You can buy topo maps from the US Geological Survey 888-ASK-USGS. Just give them the legal description and they can tell you which map(s) you need. My ancestors lived in Sidney and just south of Peter Martin Hill (don't know what that would be considered today) which are on 2 different maps (they are scaled at 1:24,000). I have a price sheet dated 11/1/99 that says the maps are $4 each with $5 s&h, so that may be outdated now. There's also a website http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/Webglis/glisbin/finder_main.pl?dataset_name=MAPS_L ARGE If you click on "conterminous U.S. map", you can zoom in and find approximately what map(s) you need. There is a list of maps available and you can order online. When you get your maps, go to www.outfitters.com/genealogy/land/twprangemap.html or www.geocities.com/heartland/hollow/3184/tipsland.html for an explanation of how to map out your land description. Now I just need to find out if I can trace the owners of my ancestors' parcels from present-day back to the earliest records. I doubt the parcels are still in the same configurations after 140+ years, but it would be worth a try. But, I do not know how to establish the approximate location of the land. For example, William C. Anderson is listed as having 80 acres. It is section # 35. Under "T," it says 11N and 7W under "R." For the date, it says 1859/07. Can someone define T (township ??), R and what the 07 after the year means. And, most important, about where the land was located. My Grandfather William was a blacksmith, also had a farm and lived "outside" of Cord (Blackriver Township), I think toward Walnut Grove since that's the post office address listed on the census records. Thanks very much. Thurman Anderson.

    3. If my ancestors owned property in Independence Co in 1859/60 in an area that became Sharp Co in 1868, where would any records (deeds, etc) be kept if they survive? At Batesville or Ash Flat? Robin Hoff Kaspar Volunteer host, Grant County, Wisconsin WIGenweb http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigrant
