    2. Ray Mays
    3. Hello. Does anyone have access to the 1829 Sherriff's Census for Independence county? If so, is there a listing for the household of Robert Bruce? If it is listed, are there listings for each person in the household? Many thanks! Ray Mays San Angelo, TX [email protected]

    3. Hey all, I couldn't help but notice all the Oil Trough messages. My father, Reuben E. SKAGGS was born there in 1916. His family moved away a couple of years after his birth. I was born in Newport in '59 and lived there until '70. I remember going to Oil Trough & Newark many times with my father. He has (had) cousins there (FAIN, I think). His uncle, Roy N. SKAGGS, lived in Newark until his death in 1962. About the neatest thing in the world was to ride the ferry at Oil Trough. And, I remember the old grocery store. It's amazing that it withstood fires, floods, and tornadoes for many, many years. My grandparents, John W. SKAGGS & Rhoda Ellen COLE, were married in Independence Co in 1908. Her father was James M(arion) COLE. Her mother was Mary Swan. If anyone has any info on James COLE, I would appreciate hearing from you. Didn't find him (or John W. SKAGGS) in the 1910 or 1900 census of Independence Co. Allen SKAGGS Surnames SKAGGS--COLE--SWAN--HEAD--BALL--BALCH

Oral history has it he was returned to homeplace, which we believe is Newton Co., MO. This is a big MYSTERY, no gravesite to date. Sure would like to know where the scandral is buried. Thanks to anyone who would take a look at this mystery. I'd look for information in Newton, McDonald MO or Delaware Co., OK in exchange. 3. Hi! Here's a handy Internet site for finding not only towns, but also cemeteries. http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form For Oil Trough, I typed in Oil Trough as the Feature Name, Arkansas as the State, and Populated Place for Feature Type. Then when you get a response to your query, click on Oil Trough, and a map will come up, and you can zoom in and out on the map. For cemeteries, you can do the same thing - putting in the name of the cemetery, the State, also the County, and cemetery as Feature Type. Or, you can get a list of all cemeteries in the County, by putting in only the State, County, and cemetery as the Feature Type. Or, you can get a list of all cemeteries in the country with a certain name - i.e. my last name is Henderson, so I could type Henderson as the Feature Name, and cemetery as the Feature Type, and it would tell me all the cemeteries in the US that are Henderson Cemetery. Lots of possibilities for research..... 3. Just a kindly reminder for those hunting old towns now just having "one horse".....LOL Ask a family member if they have an old Rand McNally laying around. from the 1970's or 80's. Sometimes the older maps still have these little places. Another thought is to purchase a program like "Auto Map". We have it at work and I found Womack, TN on it even though Womack wasn't on my 1980 map. Happy Hunting!! 3. Hi Nancy: I don't think it's list clutter at all. Can't we all use a little research help on occasion? I know I always soak up hints and suggestions that are offered to the list. I have had the opportunity to visit the Batesville library and found their resources to be very useful. I don't know about the other counties. If you can find time you might want to come to Jonesboro and visit the Craighead County library (ASU has a lot of records too). They have an extensive genealogy section and all the Arkansas counties you mentioned are covered. Also if you are going very far back in time, most of the areas were Lawrence County. Enjoy your time and prepare for the heat! 1. [AR IND.] Oil Trough General Store
    2. Alma Luper
    3. Talking about the old general store in Oil Trough brings family history to mind. My Grandfather and Grandmother ran that store in the early 20's and maybe 30's. My grandfather also ran the ferry and carried mail by wagon to Newport. Their names were Harvey Wesley Lucas and Alma Bessie Summers. Harvey was first married to Hattie or Mattie (mind glitch :0 ) Fuller. She and my great-grandfather, James F. Lucas, are buried in Rosie Cemetery. Just up the road from Oil Trough. That makes me think that perhaps James, Harvey and Mattie ran the store before Mattie died and Harvey married my grandmother. I don't know about that and come to think of it...I may never have asked anyone in the family. Not sure there is anyone left that would know :-< Perhaps a Fuller descendent is on this list? My eldest Aunt (still living) was born in the building that is the old general store. She was born in June of 1925. Is there anyone on the list that has any knowledge of the above? Or anyone with elderly relatives that might have a story or two about the Lucas' that had the store? I would be forever grateful for any small tidbit!
