Does anyone know who the name of the old Dr. back in the late 1800's or early 1900's that said he wanted to be buried where no one could find him as he was mean and knew he was headed for Hell? He wanted his tombstone to show a finger pointing to Hell. According to Mr. Bell who lives in the Buck Range area he was buried in Chinky Pin Oak casket as he wanted to be "popping" as he went to Hell. I believe that he lived somewhere in the Buck Range area. The story goes that none of the families in the area, Caldwell, Fontaine, Moss, Goodlett etc. wanted him to be buried in the "Old Buck Range Cemetery". And he didn't want to be buried there either. Everyone says he was a good Dr. but and evil man. As far as I know he didn't have any children. And I guess his wife with some help buried him. Does anyone know where he is buried? Jane Foley
I am looking for anyone researching the Sissel Family out of Howard Co., AR. I have George Reuban Sissel born 1871 died 1946 married Grace Fontaine on June 21, 1896 in Howard Co. She was born 1878 died 1976. They had 3 children, William Worth born I believe 1905, Benjamin and Bessie. I don't know if there were any other children or not. I met William Worth Sissel in the 1970's or early 1980's. He was very much the gentleman. He came to our Caldwell reunion that we had in DeQueen, AR. I just found out tonight from my 80 yr. old mother in CO that she discovered his obituary. She is sending me a copy and I will share it with you. He died in 1990. There are Sissels buried at "Old Buck Range Cemetery". (Martha) Jane (Keeling) Foley Cornelius, NC born DeQueen, AR
If some of you are interested in seeing some original state atlases..there are some at www.genealogyatlas.com . So far they have them for 1814, 1845 and about 60% of 1795. I guess they will be putting other years up eventually. Use the PDF format because you can zoom in and out and print them easily from your computer I printed two maps out but they could be slow to load if you have a dial up. But they are worth the wait. I'm looking for anyone researching Grace Fontaine (Born 1878 died 1976) who married George Sissel (born 1871 died 1946). They had at least one son William Worth Sissel who was born between 1900 and 1925 in AR. I don't know If William is still living or not. He was living in Hot Springs I believe back in the 1970's. He came to our Caldwell reunion at DeQueen, AR. I am willing to exchange info. Thanks! Jane Foley
This was past on to me: I just listed a book about Howard County Arkansas on Ebay. Can you please pass this on to your mailing list? Ebay Seller quarter_moon_glassworks or do a search for Howard County Arkansas. It make take an hour or so before the auction shows up... Thanks, J. Davenport
I have spent the morning reading Judy's articles and feel that anyone would definitely benefit from some of them. http://www.thecitizennews.com/finding%20your%20folks/fyf2004/fyf040723.htm Judy Fowler Kilgore has written a great article on how to "write a query". Jane Foley
The Howard Co., AR website has been updated. I am sorry it has taken me so long but I had been having problems staying connected to AOL for the past 3 or 4 months. It might have taken 7 or 8 times just for me to read an email much less trying to send one out. As you can see by the email address I do have a new ISP so if you have me in your address book for the website or the mailing list you need to change the address to HudsonK@direcway.com (NOTE: it is NOT direcTway.com ... no T) I will keep the old AOL address until the end of the year to make sure all had been tranferred properly. If you do not find something you sent me posted...I am sorry I lost it thru my AOL problems Thank you & good luck in your search! There should be a historical group in Howard Co and the others too, that might have or know where a city directory could be had. It will probably depend on the size town, here in Hot Springs they have city directories going way back, I am almost positive that there is a group in Polk Co, you might try checking the county websites and see how to contact any historical or genealogical group. Good luck. Gary M Ishmael wrote: >Thanks for your reply. In 1940, would there have been a type of directory, >city or county that might still be available? Thanks for your reply. In 1940, would there have been a type of directory, city or county that might still be available? I haven't seen any listed. Thanks again.
The issuing of death certificates was haphazard at best in the first 30-40 years of the requirment to fill out one. It depended on the doctor taking the time to fill it out and file it with the state. My grandfather died at home in 1962, his death was well known and all , but he wasn't attended by a doctor and the funeral home didn't file one, then again his father in law died in 1917 in rural Nevada County and his death certificate was issued and completely filled out. If one exists on the person you are seeking one for, it could be in the old files of a doctor long departed, stuffed in a box in an attic or such. THe funeral home record is the next best bet. Don't give up though, on 5 Feb 2004, a letter written in 1866 by my 2great grandmother in Pontotoc Co MS, was found in that proverbial box hidden in an attic in Clark Co VA. Thank God the lady who found it is a genealogist and got online and searched until she found someone researching the names mentioned, also a letter written by her son in 1908 from Sevier Co Ar, resurfaced in a newspaper in Galveston, Tx published on 7 Sep 1908. Miracles still happen and I wish you as much luck as I have had this year. Have tried twice to get a death certificate from 1941, at Arkansas Health Dept. and not found. Where were deaths recorded at that time in Howard, Polk and Pike counties?I tried several mortuaries, they didn't have records for those dates.
Can someone put me in touch with the local Howard Co. Historical Society? Thanks! Jane Foley
I understand that Newton Dudley/Douglas Caldwell born January 19, 1841 in Buck Range, AR died December 30, 1918 in Idabel, McCurtain Co., OK and is buried at Philadelphia Cemetery in Goodwater, McCurtain Co., OK was a Justice of the Peace in Hempstead or Howard Co. Can anyone help me with proving this information? His wife Lucy Ann D.Fontaine born August 14, 1848 in Buck Range, AR and died November 21, 1887is buried at Buck Range Cemetery. They had 11 children. I am interested in hearing from anyone researching the Caldwell and Fontaine and Jackson families. I am willing to share any information I have with anyone. Also, I understand that the Post Mistress of Columbus, AR is researching these lines. Her last name is Myers, maiden name, Caldwell I think. Please put me in touch with her or her with me. What can anyone tell me about the Buck Range Cemetery at Mineral Springs? I have 2 people that want to visit it in the next few weeks. One is coming from San Angelo, TX. She needs someone to direct her to it. I understand from my 2 aunts in TX that when they visited there about 7 years ago that it was locked up. There are no roads into it. And that some of the ladies in the community had taken it upon theirselves to write down all of the information on the tombstones. They said there was a Caldwell in the area and he was not very friendly. Has the status on this cemetery changed? What can be done about organizing a team or a committee to clean it up and make it available to the families who want to visit it? Thanks for any suggestions or help that anyone can give me. I am trying to locate Peggy Reed who I corresponded with a couple of years ago about the Caldwell Family. I sent her an email but it came back. Jane Foley

Below is a response to the message I posted yesterday about Ancestry's One World Tree. The way I read and understood the information page was what I posted yesterday. If I was incorrect my apologies. This has been sent out and so I am passing it on to you. Good luck in your search Kathy If you have submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com's OneWorldTree site, you need to be aware of a change about to be implemented by Ancestry. Family Trees uploaded to the OneWorldTree site, which have been free heretofore, will be moved into a subscription data base. After approximately May 21st this data base will no longer be accessible for free. Ancestry will be begin offering OneWorldTree Preview at $49.95 for 14 months for access to these donated trees. If you'd prefer that your information not be sold, there is a link below which will take you to a set of instructions on opting out by deleting your tree. Go first here: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/ When you arrive at the page - look for the link toward the top "What's a preview?" Read the information and then click on "View our checklist" (which appears on #3). On the page is a statement that says "If for any reason you do not want your tree to be part of the new OneWorldTree service, you must delete it from the Ancestry World Tree database by tentatively May 21, 2004." Click on the link "Deleting a tree you submitted" The resulting page gives instructions on how to delete your tree. Feel free to pass this along to other lists.
