I have no information on the U&R. During the Civil War, Harden's activities are somewhat confusing in that: "Information on the 8th Virginia Cavalry: by Byron Morris lists him with the Virginia 8th Cavalry, Co K (Big Sandy Rangers) which was Confederate but later, October 12, 1863, he was commissioned as a 1st Lt. in the Wayne County 167th Militia which was basically a Union militia group (Greg Carroll, WV Historian, Archives & History). According to Jack Dickinson's "8th Virginia Cavalry", Company K Fairfield Rifle Guards was enlisted May 28, 1861. This company became part of the 8th Cavalry on May 15, 1862.
