    3. Dear Tina- Tell your Uncle Donald that I have a copy of our great grandfather's Civil War Pension application. I tried getting it through the National Archives with no luck. But I met a woman on line (Irene Wright) who is researching the same family and she sent me a packet of stuff she had collected. Seth Lathan Smith filed the application in Craighead Co.,AR in 1901. The pension applications are on file with the Arkansas History Commission. He was in the Col. Wood's16th Alabama Infantry and they fought in every major battle in the western theater. He served from 1861-1864, when he was struck by a tree that was hit by a cannon ball at Chickamunga,GA. He suffered spine, back, hip and kidney injuries. He was a Fourth Corporal. There were a couple of other Smiths in the 16th Albama Inf. but I haven't found out yet if they were his brothers or what? It did have his childrens names and addresses; N.A. Hill -Bay ,AR (wit: S.A. Hyde + C.S.Smith) (BUD) There is a court record from Craighead Co.,AR dated 29 April 1911 where J.G. Hill, the husband of Nancy A. Smith -Hill, and son-in-law of Seth L. Smith, petitioned for the pension warrent amt. to repay him partially for the care during the last illness and burial of Seth L. Smith. I had been told that he died in TX. I have been looking in the TX death records to no avail. Maybe I should lood in Craighead Co.,AR? Census records say he was born in MS, apparently in 1850 he was in Lowndes,MS, and his family might have been in Monroe,MS proir to that, and before that NC? Smith left a will? What happened to the farm in Finch ? Did Donald's mother get anything from his estate? I don't think my mother ever did. Will the probate records from 1951 be in the county files or the Historical records? How did John F. Smith get the farm in Finch? Did his father,Seth L. Smith, give him his property since he was the only boy? The property tax,1890, Tax-sch. dist. 47 Pine Knott. Greene Co.,AR, that Seth paid in 1890, was that in Finch? Where was Pine Knott?
