I have no information on the U&R. During the Civil War, Harden's activities are somewhat confusing in that: "Information on the 8th Virginia Cavalry: by Byron Morris lists him with the Virginia 8th Cavalry, Co K (Big Sandy Rangers) which was Confederate but later, October 12, 1863, he was commissioned as a 1st Lt. in the Wayne County 167th Militia which was basically a Union militia group (Greg Carroll, WV Historian, Archives & History). According to Jack Dickinson's "8th Virginia Cavalry", Company K Fairfield Rifle Guards was enlisted May 28, 1861. This company became part of the 8th Cavalry on May 15, 1862. Thank you for your help. Are you related through Isaac? I have a question... I have a large piece of artwork on canvas, size about 18x24, of a man in uniform, looks like Civil War attire but, the Hat says: U & R, where the & symbol is looks like a Train or an Anchor... I have NO idea what the U and the R stand for. The medium of this artwork looks like a Pencil drawing or very fine Charcoal. It looks like a Professional Portrait during the Civil War. I think that this person is either a SCAGGS, ELKINS, CHRISTIAN or a LAMBERT. I have looked and am not coming up with anything. I'm stumped. Thanks... Author: Robert_Scaggs Surnames: Scaggs, Christian Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.greene/2814.2.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great-great grandparents were Harden and Jane Scaggs and I have conducted considerable research on them. Unfortunately, I do not know the parents of Harden Scaggs nor his actual birthplace. I would be happy to try to answer specific questions that you may have. Harden was born in KY around 1831 based upon the 1860 census. Some feel that he came from the old Peter Scaggs line in Lawrence County, KY but I have never found documentation. Although he was not counted in the 1850 Wayne County, VA/WV census, he must have been in the area because he and his wife Jane Christian had their first son, Isaac, in 1851. Jane Christian's parents were Alexander and Elizabeth Newton. I have visited the farm where they resided for awhile along Wolf Creek, Wayne County, WV. Harden died in the 1866/67 time frame of an unknown cause. Birth and death certificates have not been located. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
