The cemetery in the park is right behind the large building, by the swimming pool. I think that is what you are referring to as the dance hall. Hello Tina, There was a skirmish that tool place on: July 10, 1862 at Scatterville. But I believe Scatterville is located in the state of Missouri. I will try and do more research on this and will let you know if I find anything. To the best of my knowledge and research, there were never any skirmishes in Greene County. I believe the Union troops march through there twice, but no battle or skirmish took place. I am a distant relative of Charles Francis Forsythe, a Confederate War veteran from Greene County, Arkansas. I will let you know if I find anything else. I know that there is a Scatterville Cemetery. Someone sent me some pictures of it because I have some family buried there, but I am pretty sure it is in Clay county. I am not sure of the exact location... it is very near Rector, though. -----Original Message----- From: Tina Easley [mailto:tina@grnco.net] Sent: Thursday, December 30, 1999 11:39 AM To: ARGREENE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Fw: Scatterville, Arkansas Could someone help? Hi My Friends- To find the cemetery in Crowleys Ridge State Park ask a Park Ranger. You will be directed to the main pavillion, a log structure with food, snacks, a juke box, and dance floor. Look out the southeast corner, about twenty paces, you will see a structure resembling Washington Monument. This is the cemetery with about twelve graves. Ben & Catherine Crowley is there along with a few other names including two by the name of Tennison. I danced there as a teenager, sparked my dates, walked the woods, and never knew gggrands were silently in my presence. It is now well marked by a big sign showing who is buried there mostly in unmarked graves. The whole cemetery is only about 20' X 20'. Hi All, I was born and raised in Lawrence and Craighead counties, all my Grandparents were in Lawrence and Greene Counties. I left the area in 1989. We spent a lot of time at (Walcott) Crowley's Ridge State Park!! Many, many Family reunions were held there every year! I thought I had been all over that Park, but this Cemetery has me baffled! Is the Cemetery in the State Park area, or is it somewhere on Crowley's Ridge? If it is indeed in the Park area, could someone please enlighten me as to where in the park it is located? I, as well as many of you, know the park by landmarks, the Wishing well, the Lake, hiking trails, the Lodge and old Dance hall, and the folk tale of the cement War time death chamber and/or cell. I would appreciate any information about this Cemetery's location in the Park! Thanks, Tina
Do you suppose there would be a register of those buried at that old cemetery used by the pioneers? I am doubting that many had headstones but never hurts to ask. You see I have always been told that my gr gr gr grandmother died and was buried at Crowley's Ridge as they came through there in covered wagon. Story goes that she smoked a pipe and was sitting near the bank of a river; stood up and fell on the pipe and then died and was buried at Crowley's Ridge. Her last name would have been either Reed or Lacy, I can't recall just at this time without going to my notes. If any one knows of such a cemetery listing, I sure would be interested. Thanks so much for all of the help/info. I have received re Crowley's Ridge. I will plan a trip there in the Spring. Janice (Sanders) Callahan (near St. Louis)
It is also good to remember that there is a difference between Crowley's Ridge and Crowley's Ridge State Park. Crowley's Ridge forms a narrow arc of scenic rolling hills extending from the northeast corner of Arkansas in upper Clay County to the Mississippi River at Helena, Arkansas. If it's the State Park someone is inquiring about, that is different. Crowley's Ridge was established as a state Park in 1933. The park was constructed by the Civilian Conversation Corps (CCC). The Ridge was named for Benjamin F. Crowley, a soldier during the war of 1812, that later begin the first settlement in the northeastern part of Arkansas. Crowley's Ridge State Park is located 10-12 miles west of Paragould, Arkansas in Greene County. From Paragould, you would take route 412 west for 10 miles, then go 2 miles south on Hwy 168. There is an old cemetery located at the State Park that was used by the early pioneers. Hope this helps. Happy Hunting! Dale Foresythe Acton, Massachusetts
I was on Crowley's Ridge a few days ago, I went to Paragould for the holidays. My uncle and cousins live on Crowley's Ridge. If I were to move back to the area, I would live on Crowley's Ridge. If I remember correctly, the ridge was named for Benjamin Crowley, an early settler. Crowley's Ridge Academy, a Christian college, and Crowley's Ridge [Walcott] State Park are nearby my uncle. The Park is 15 miles N of Jonesboro and 9 miles W of Paragould. I can't find my map with the gealogical features, but I believe this is about the head of the ridge, it runs south for quite a ways. My uncle told me something interesting about the ridge, he said in the ice ages, the ridge was a river bank, that the Ohio River ran down the west side of the ridge and the Mississippi River ran down the east side and that the ridge is a gravel bank. P.S. The Greene County Library has a wonderful genealogical library, staffed with very helpful volunteers. Can someone tell me just where Crowley's Ridge is? Family story has been told down through the years that my gr gr gr grandmother died and was buried on Crowley's Ridge as they came by wagon across into Ark. from Tenn. Would love to know where this might be. Thanks so much, Janice (near St. Louis)

Crowley's Ridge was named after one of the earliest white settlers in northeast Arkansas, Benjamin Crowley, who lived in the Walcott area. But they were there long before 1850, and I read they were from KY. -- Sandi F. in Jonesboro, Arkansas protean@ipa.net
