The following was posted by Verna Mikulencak <cluckquack@aol.com> on Thu, 17 Feb 2000 on the Greene County GenConnect Query Forum: - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Surname: Ferguson, Baker, Forbis, Roe, Cole, Rowland Am searching for information on my grand-father/ggrandfather/grandmother/ggrandmother. My ggrandfather, Asbury A. Ferguson owned a Boarding House with a partner, Albert Rowland, in Main Shore Township, Greene Co., Ark. about 1900. His son, George F., resided with him on the 1900 Greene Co., Tenn. census. A cook, Susie and two other boarders were also listed:Annie Dethumas and Ferrel Lamb. I cannot locate Asbery before or after this 1900 census. A recent query I posted offered the possibility that Asbury's parents were Barnet and Mariah Ferguson of Gibson Co.,Tn and they appear on an 1850 census there with an Asbury as a child. Also listed as siblings of Asbury are on 1850 census: Thomas, age 22, Frank, age 18, Manerva, age 15, Lavan, age 13, Elizabeth, age 7, Dallas, age 5. Dallas' first name was Aaron. Have research the 1860 Gibson Co., Tn census and the 1840 Gibson Co. census and cannot find Barnet, Mariah Ferguson family at all. Would appreciate any assistance whatsoever. I am also trying to ascertain information on an aunt, Lucille Ferguson (Roe), (Cole). Lucille resided in the Paragound/Jonesboro, Ark. area in the 1940-1960's. She was first married to a Tom Roe and they resided in Paragould/Jonesboro. Lucille later remarried to a Fred Cole and they owned a photography shop in Jonesboro and lived above it, I think. I do not believe Lucille had children of her own, but her spouses may have had children by previous marriages. Lucille and Fred Cole also owned a lake cottage not far from Jonesboro, Ark. Lucille's siblings, all born near Bard/Paragould,Ark.were:My mother, Betty Ferguson Flowers/Blytheville,Ark., Sadie Ferguson Ozment/Halls, Tenn., Imogene Ferguson Miller/Illinois and a baby brother, Al Y. who died in childhood in the Paragould/ Jonesboro/Monette/Manila area of spinal meningitis. Lucille's parents were George F. Ferguson and Laura Smithy Baker Ferguson who resided in Lake Township, Paragould area in 1920. Am also seeking information on the Frank Forbis family in Paragould,Ark. The Baker's I seek information on were from Crockett Co., TN, near Halls and moved to the Paragould area: Isaac "Ike" Newton Baker, listed on Greene Co. 1910 Census with spouse,Mary, and stepson, Frank Forbis; James Baker, Ike's brother, also resided in the area around that time. Ike went to church at the Alexander Church near Bard. The area my mother Betty was born at near Bard, Arkansas was supposedly called "Panther Island."Can anyone tell me exactly where that is and whether any books or stories have been published about the area. Have information on the Ferguson/Baker family I will gladly share and will greatly appreciate any help with the above.. A.O.U.W. is Ancient Order of United Workers, which was a fraternal/insurance type organization. See: http://www.nowfbs.com/history.htm The Great White Plague is an old European term for tuberculosis. See: http://www.nimr.mrc.ac.uk/mhe95/tb.htm Now, can someone tell me if there are any resources, other than land deeds and vital records, to determine if someone lived in Paragould between 1920 and 1939? Any city directories? Tax lists? Voter lists? -Steve
Thanks to the Greene County Mailing List, I have at last found a part of my late husband's family, that I have searched for, for years and years. A special thanks to the person or persons who had the Wood's Chapel Cemetery put online. It was my first clue. Thanks again, Glenda

Both were said by elderly family members to have come from Greene County, Arkansas. Their mother was from Kentucky, their father from Arkansas. Family stories say John Ryer was born 6 months after his father marched away to war. Father probably Confederate soldier (by John Ryer's added given name "Jeff Davis"), also may have had releative "Enoch Turner" or Enoch Turner Thomason". One of the brothers was said to have been named after their father. Both brothers settled in Hunt County, Texas at least by 1883. Delbert Thomason, son of George W. Thomason recollected his father was a small bult man who liked to fight; also that his father would show him how to do something, then say "That's the way my father taught me." Delbert also recalled his father having owned a farm in Greene County, Arkansas, and vividly remembers his father receiving a letter from his farm tenant in Greene County recounting his troubles in which the fence had burned and a cyclone tore down the barn. Any help would be appreciated. We've looked for this family for years. John Ryer was known to have kept impeccable records in a large family bible but it was reputed to have burned in a house fire about 1929 in Hunt County, Texas. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Any replies should be sent to the Greene County GenConnect Query Forum [<http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Greene>] unless it is personal or involves live people addresses etc. when it should be sent to Ann Thomason <AnnRThomason@AOL.com>. --

Tina, Having been a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for the past 40 years I will try to answer your question. The "Odd Fellows" is a Brotherhood Fraternity much the same as the Masons. It is the largest fraternity in the world under one head. The Sovereign Grand Master and the headquarters is in Winston-Salem, NC where it was moved from Baltimore, Maryland several years ago. The basic beliefs are to take care of the sick, relief of the sick, bury the dead and take care of the orphan. As you can tell the government has taken over a lot of this but we still work hard to do what we can for all of our own members. The ladies unit is called the Rebekah's and there are six more units including the youth organizations. A good short history is on the web at: http://www.oddfellows.com/History.html Gene C. Tina, I checked with the Woodsmen Organization and below is the note and information they sent back to me. It appears there are no connections between the Woodsmen of the World and the "Odd Fellows" ... at least they are not saying there is any. Regards, Dale Foresythe Searching - Howton, Harris, Harold, Forsythe, Foresyth ******************************************************************* Thank you for your e-mail. There is no connection between Woodmen and the Odd Fellows. They are two separate, unaffiliated organizations. We have no information on the Odd Fellows. People become members of Woodmen by purchasing a life insurance, annuity or hospital supplement product. They are placed in a local lodge which elects officers and conducts fraternal activities in their communities. If you have a relative who was a Woodmen members, we can do a record search.
