Posted on: Greene County, Ar Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Greene?read=847 Surname: Butler ------------------------- I am also tracing a Butler Family in Greene Co. and have some information. My Great-Grandfather was Emory Marion Monroe Butler, born in Alabama on 15 March 1858. He is listed in the 1910 Greene Co. census, I have not been able to locate when he moved from Alabama to Arkansas. I know he was married to "Bridget" A. Ellen, who is shown as being from ILL. and they had 7 children, but only 3 are known to have survived to adulthood. They lived in the area of Beech Grove and Hooker until their deaths in the 1920s & 30S. We believe Bridget was living with the James Norsworthy family in Greene Co. Union Twp in 1880 census at the age of 13, it appears that she had a different last name that is unclear on the census. Emory and Bridget married in 1880 or 81. My Grandfather was born on 12 March 1889 in Greene Co. and was also named Emory Marion Monroe Butler.

    2. Brenda Gaines Gulick
    3. Janice- These are the Smith ancestors I know of in Greene co.,Ar. Brenda.; My great grandfather, Seth L. "Jack" Smith, reportedly served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He lived in Alabama at the time, and according to the census, was an overseer, undoubtedly of slaves. He had married Matilda Nolen before the war began. After the Civil war, the Federal Government required citizens from the former Confederate States to sign a "Loyalty Oath" to the United States as a means of regaining their rights as citizens. This was done in conjunction with voter registration in each county. As a matter of fact- you could not vote, buy and sell land or complete much of anything legally until you had so sworn before the proper officials. Some persons were not allowed to register or approved initially because of various restrictions: atrocities committed during the War, etc. Most "common folks" simply signed and went on about their business. The original records are at the Alabama State Archives. The election district where they signed is listed- as is the information on whether each man signed with a full signature, his initials, or made his "mark" (X). Miscellaneous info: 903 residents took the loyalty oath in Marion County and registered to vote. 16 voters were rejected for various reasons. Of the 903 registered voters- 496 signed with an "X"- well over half. Date Registered Name District Vol. & Pg. Signature No Seth or Jack Smith found signing the oath Co. K...Bull Mountain Invincibles From Marion County Muster roll for Company K under Captain C. F. Condrey Trim Nolen and T. L. Smith They both enlisted on 13 May 1862 in Aberdeen. (this could have been Seth and a brother-in-law, I wrote to the lady who transcribed it and she said this is what the handwriting looked like to her, but I haven't heard of the name "Trim" and T.L. might have been S.L.) The Muster Roll of May 16, 1862, from which these names were taken, says Company K's station was Columbus, Mississippi. The report says the men had little clothing, no accoutrements, and had no arms. Their military appearance says "good physique" and that they were " raw recruits and undisciplined but had capacity for learning." ------------ In 1850 Matilda Nolen -Smith was with her parents in Marion Co.,AL 1850 Marion Co.,AL census beat 99 Lemuel Nolen b:1792 NC Leah b: 1810 NC William b:1824/6 NC Nancy b: 1825 NC Matilda b: 1831NC ** John b: 1835 NC Jack and Matilda must have married in 1852/3 ???? in Pikeville,Marion Co.,AL ???? 1860 Marion Co.,AL census; S. 2. Brenda: Thanks for the Smith info. My Smith is: Mary Jane Smith, born 1835/36 TN; married abt. 1859 in Ark. to Milas Pinckney Presley. They show up on the 1860 census for Fulton County, Ark. with their first child, Mahala, born 1860 (my gr grandma); they had a couple more children in Ark., then moved up into Howell & Oregon Counties in MO until Mary Jane Smith Presley's death in 1875. Milas P. Presley remarried twice after Mary Jane; He and all three wives are buried at Shiloh Cem., near Thayer, MO. If any one has any info on who the parents of Mary Jane Smith would be, I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much. Janice Sanders Callahan (near St. Louis)
