    2. R & D Walker
    3. Carey, I love it that the Winn Cemetery (and the Winn Family) is getting so much notice. How I wish the cemetery had not been vandalized. My great-great-grandfather, John Winn, father of Samuel C. Winn, may be buried there but it's not likely we'll ever know for sure. In 1880, John Winn, then 84 years old, was living with his daughter, Amanda Foster (widow of David W.C. Foster) and her children. Amanda's family lived in household 314 of Poland Township in 1880, and Samuel and Cassie Winn and family lived in household 311. For the record, Emerson Dod Winn was Samuel's and Cassie's son who was born 10/27/1857. (In the 1860 Carroll County census, and in the 1880 Greene County census, his middle initial was reported as "D.") Emerson Dod first married Mollie Lamb (in Greene Co., 1883) and then M. (Minnie) A. Hicks (in Craighead Co., 1888). I am assuming that Mollie died. In 1997, I found his grave at Rutherford Cemetery in northern Craighead County. According to his headstone, he died 2/5/1897. Minnie A. Hicks Winn married William E. Nelms in 1898 and in 1900 they were living in household 26 of Powell Township, along with Earnest Winn, reported to be the stepson of Nelms. I believe it was Emerson's brother, William E. Winn, b. 10/1864, who died in 1931 by drowning in the St. Francis River. Debra rdwalker@grnco.net

    3. Posted on: Greene County, Ar Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Greene?read=854 Surname: austin ------------------------- As old as this queary is I am sure already have this information but in case you don't here goes. This is archived in Fathers of the Ridge: The patriarchs of the Austin family in Greene County were Stephen and Ransom Austin both natives of South Carolina. Stephen was born in that state in 1797 and Ransom was born there in 1805. Both of these men were in Greene County by 1840; this places them among the very early settlers of the County. In their long journey from South Carolina, Stephen and Ransom paused for some years in McNairy County, Tennessee where records show their presence in 1830. They arrived in Greene County sometime during the 1830's. Both Stephen and Ransom settled in that part of the County then known as St. Francis Township. As time passed their descendants scattered to other parts of the County. Stephen Austin was born on July 16, 1797, his wife was named Martha and she was born in Tennessee on August 19, 1810. Stephen Austin died June 10, 1863. Their known children were: Joseph, 1830; Sarah, 1832; Ransom, 1833; Margaret, 1835; Robert, 1840; Stephen, 1843; Lucinda, 1845; and George W., 1849. Of these children Joseph, the oldest, was born in Tennessee; all of the others were born after the family's arrival in Arkansas. One of their children was George Washington AUSTIN, born July 8, 1849 in Greene county, Married Martha Louise Susanne WITCHER, born Sept. 3, 1850 in Calhoun county, Georgia (parents Henry & Martha WITCHER). Their children: Stephen Henry, May 1876-Feb. 1, 1918, John William Nov. 25, 1880-Feb. 11, 1952. Stephen married Mary MORROW, born Feb 7, 1880 in Tennessee, died April 4, 1973 in St. Louis, MO. They had 8 children, all born in Beech Grove orO'Kean. In a limited space, it is impossible to trace all of the Austin descendants down to the present day. However, Joseph Austin married in Greene County and his wife was Roda M. Roda was a native of Alabama born in 1833. Their known children were: John W., 1858; William H., 1861; Charles N., 1863; Stephen C., 1865; and E. J. C., 1869. Stephen C. Austin, son of Joseph, was known to George Rowland, writer of the Father's of the Ridge, and was commonly addressed by his middle name, Carroll. Carroll was married three times. He had one son, Ezra, by his first wife. There were no children born of the second marriage. By his third wife, Janie Robinson Austin, he had three daughters: Mary Lee, Edna and Hazel. Of the four children only one, Hazel, survives at the present time. During the 1930's Carroll Austin lived for several years near Shiloh Church in the Center Hill Community. He and Janie moved to West Court Street in Paragould where they spent the last few years of their lives. Carroll died first and both are buried, side by side, at the Center Hill Cemetery. Mary Lee Austin, daughter of Carroll, married Brad Curry and they had two children, Pauline and Ronald. Both Pauline and Ronald were born during the 1920's. Mary Lee died when Ronald and Pauline were children. From the time of Mary Lee's death Ronald and Pauline lived with their grandparents, Carroll and Janie Austin. After the grandparent died, Ronald lived with his sister Pauline. Ransom Austin, born 1805, married a woman by the name of Martha who, like himself, was a native of South Carolina. This Martha is not to be confused with the wife of Stephen Austin who was also named Martha. Both these women had the same name and were of the same age; however, Stephen's wife was born in Tennessee while Ransom's wife was born in South Carolina. Ransom and Martha Austin had eight known children: Elizabeth, born 1834; Thomas, 1836; Stephen, 1838; Wesley. 1839; Martha A., 1841; Nancy, 1846; Robert C., 1848; and Smith, 1850. Hope this helps patricia of glenpool

I found at the Jonesboro Library by Floyd R. Barnhill, says the cemetery is "Lost" and says it is unmarked. It is described as a quarter of a mile north of the Craighead Co line a short distance west of Old Greensboro Road. He says a legal description would put it in the NW corner of SW quarter, of SE quarter of section 34 of township 16 north, range 4 east. The article lists some of the burials based on the memory of two women. Most o them are Winns and Rowes. Contact me if you want them. Another article I found dated 1968 describes it as 2 miles west and little south of Clark Chapel Church on the farm of Nolan and Albert Davis. Another article describes it as 1/4 mile north of Craighead line and about 1 and 1/4 miles west of Hwy 351.

Is there any type of "map" showing the locations of the graves? The listing is on the Greene County web site. Are all of the graves together or could there be an older section? 1. [ARGREENE] Why Ward's in AR
    2. Brenda Gaines Gulick
    3. Someone on the Ward-mailing list asked why there were so many Ward's who moved to Arkansas. These were 2 answers; A Guide to Genealogy Research in Arkansas Emigration and Immigration Very few Europeans came to the Arkansas area during the years of French and Spanish rule, 1686 to 1803. The1810 census of the Louisiana Territory listed only 1,062 non-Indian residents in the entire District of Arkansas. Immigration began in earnest with the cotton boom of 1818. Many families of Scottish, Scotch-Irish, and English descent moved overland from Virginia and the Carolinas through Tennessee and Mississippi or Missouri. They often brought slaves with them. In 1860, Black slaves comprised over one fourth of the population. Most Arkansans today are descended from Anglo-Saxon and Blackfamilies who came from older southern states before 1900. About 1867, the rich land between the Arkansas and White rivers beckoned to large groups of Southern European emigrants. Many families from Poland settled in Pulaski County. A number of Italians located in the northwestern part of the state. The last Indian tribes had been removed from Arkansas to present-day Oklahoma by 1835. Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs have been transcribed in Jack D. Baker, Cherokee Emigration Rolls, 1817-1835 (Oklahoma City: Baker Pub., 1977; FHL book 970.3 C424be). Some immigrants landed at New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi River to Arkansas. The Family History Library has passenger lists for New Orleans from 1820 to 1921 and indexes from 1820 to 1952. The National Archives has passenger lists through 1945 and indexes to 1952. The American Immigration Page" Naturalization records were generally filed in the circuit courts in each county. About 40 percent of the counties in Arkansas have pre-1907 records. The Family History Library has microfilm copies of the records for some of these counties. For residents of Little Rock (Pulaski County), for example, the library has declarations of intention and some final certificates, 1870 to 1906. Some naturalization papers were filed in the U.S. District Courts located in Fort Smith, Little Rock, and Fort Worth, Texas. A statewide index to naturalization records of Arkansas was compiled by the Works Projects Administration for the years 1809-1906. Copies of this index are at the National Archives--Fort Worth Branch, the Arkansas History Commission, and at the U.S. District Court in Fort Smith. The Family History Library does not have a copy. For naturalization records after September 1906, contact the National Archives--Fort Worth Branch or the local Immigration and Naturalization Service. ------ The United States made the Louisiana Purchase, which included the land that is presently Arkansas, in 1803. Shortly thereafter, the Arkansas territory was opened to settlement, and the inducement to move there was good land at very low prices. Other settlers came to claim bounty land awarded for service in the War of 1812. Also, in the early 1800s, cotton was much in demand, and Arkansas was a good place to grow it. You are right--there WERE a lot of Wards in Arkansas. In 1850, for instance, over 1 in every 100 people in Arkansas was named Ward! This was by far the densest Ward population in the United States. An interesting web site showing surname distribution can be found at http://www.hamrick.com/names . Look at the 1850 map, then look at the 1880 map. The 1880 map at that site indicates that, by 1880, the Arkansas Ward population was less concentrated. Many of the Indian Wards migrated to Indian Territory (now OK) or to Mexico (now TX), of course, but many more Wards migrated to other nearby states.
