WAWALLAW-L Archives From: "Margaret Strickland" <margstri@bmi.net <mailto:margstri@bmi.net>> Subject: [WAWALLAW-L] World War I Soldiers, Walla Walla City (A-G), WA Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2004 10:58:18 -0800 The Walla Walla Valley Genealogical Society is assisting the Loose Cannon Committee of Walla Walla in finding descendants of the following soldiers from Walla Walla County who were in Battery D and used the 155 mm French cannons during World War I. Their Battalion was the first American unit to receive such advanced weaponry in World War I. At the request of the City of Walla Walla, 4 of the cannons were sent to Walla Walla from France in 1920 following the end of the war and the United States Congress formally loaned the cannons to the City of Walla in 1927. Two of the cannons were turned in during World War II to be used to make equipment for World War II. Two have remained in Walla Walla and are being refurbished by the Loose Cannon Committee. The Committee would like to find descendants of these soldiers so they may be invited to the dedication of the cannons when the project is completed. We are not only interested in descendants but any family history you could donate about them would be greatly appreciated. I have divided the soldiers from Walla Walla City into three groups - A-G; H-M & N-W. World War I Draft Registration cards are on microfilm. I have ordered those for Walla Walla County through the Family History of the Mormon Church in Walla Walla in hopes of finding next of kin on some of the 351 soldiers in Battery D. The Family History Center has placed them on indefinite loan for permanent use at their Family History Center. You may view them free of charge at the Walla Walla center. The microfilms are also available at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and at their regional centers. Microfilms of Draft Registration Cards are available for all states which existed during World War I.
