So, on November 18, 1877, I was married to the widow Ann Montgomery. She was a good woman, though I made a mistake for we both had children and no two sets of children will hardly ever agree. She treated me well. In 1880, we took a visit to Texas to visit her brother, whom she had not seen for 32 years. It was a happy meeting, not long for them to enjoy, for one month after we got there, he took pneumonia and died. Not long after his death in March, I came back to Arkansas. Her brother's family wanted her to stay a while. She came back in June. Her brother's name was Riley Morris, and he was a strong Primitive Baptist. I visited this church twice while I was there and heard three able preachers: Anderson, Washington and Norton. Also, an old Brother Maples." About Ann Morris Montgomery Ridgway's death: "My wife had only one little boy with her . . . I had a nice little crop growing (probably at Ash Flat, Sharp County, Arkansas). In May, I was chopping my cotton out; my wife came out to where I was, 'a crying. She said she wanted to go to see her children. I had only two acres of cotton. I told her to wait until Sunday, as I wanted to finish my cotton. She agreed to wait, if I would take her on Sunday. I took her within one mile of her children and she said she would walk on. It was ten miles back home, so I went back. I asked her when I must come after her. She said she would have some of her folks bring her home when she got her stay out. On the following Wednesday, her little boy came after me. He said his mother was very sick. I went as quickly as I could get there. I believed she would die, from the dream I had the night before. She took a chill on Monday evening and died Saturday morning, on May 30, 1883. Those were dark days for me. She united with the Missionary Baptists in her young days; but her husband was a Presbyterian, so she united with them. She said, several times, if she had her clothing when we would see the Primitive Baptists baptizing, she would ask them to baptize her. She said they were her people." To all who might be interested......I called the library in Salem AR to inquire about the Fulton Co Chronicles. The lady there says all 30 issues are in their reference section but that there are no more copies for sell and they are no longer being published. I did not ask her the date of the first nor the last issue as I should have. She did say the library is no longer open on Sat but is open every weekday. It is located on the court square in Salem. The library also has the 1997 EHC Cemetery book for sale for $20.00..... it is also available by mail for about $23 from the Cooperative Extension Office at 870-895-3301. Hope this helps. Thought this might add a little to your history. The following is from an interview with Jeffie Moser Felton and appears in the Book: "Down Memory Lane #1", by Betty G. McCollum and Sue Shell Chrisco:: "Grandma Walker whipped one of the jayhawkers. She came from Tennessee with oxen and wagon. She drove a team of ox. She had two teams and one old man was going to take one away and she just skinned his knuckles all over and he didn't get her steer." "Grandma Walker was mommie's mother. She was a short, fat German-like woman. There used to be an old German up there, way back yonder, and he was picking cotton, and we was picking cotton, and you couldn't hardly understand a word he said, and I told dad, "That old man over there looks like Uncle Mike Pugh", and he said, "Well, Mike is part German." And that old man was full-blooded German." " Grandma Walker was a Pugh and her mother was a Brown. Her daddy was a Pugh. They lived around Mt. Pleasant. I'm kin to Nora Copeland, her mother was Julie Pugh. Mommie and Julie was own cousins. Aunt Lucy Pugh was Julie's mother; she was Uncle Mike Pugh's wife. Mike Pugh was my grandmother's brother." I am going to send copies of this to the Fulton and Izarrd County Arkansas List. There are a lot of good people there that may want to jump in. Judy the better half and I would be glad to share any thing we can help you with. Sure hope this helps. Let us know. I want you to know that your E-Mail address got my eyes open this morning more then the cup of coffee. Sophronia Davenport ( Wiseman ) Montgomery is my Great Grandma and her family is our brick wall. Mary Frances Montgomery born about. 1873 married D. L. Hatman. Mary was Sophronia's daughter Below is some of the notes and info we have on her Happy hunt-in Jim and Judy ( Shuck ) Montgomery JIM M LOOKING FOR SOPHRONIA/SAFRONIA Davenport ( Wiseman ) Montgomery Family Sophronia Davenport Wiseman was born 24 February 1851 in Arkansas, and died May 8th, 1904 in Arkansas. She married James Ferguson Montgomery 6 July 1871. She is buried in Humphries Cemetery, Fulton County, Arkansas. We found that the middle initial "D." was the name Davenport. The children of Sophronia D. Wiseman and James Ferguson Montgomery were Mary Frances Montgomery born about. 1873 married D. L. Hatman we think this was Daniel Hatman . Alfred T. Montgomery born April 14, 1874, Izard County, Arkansas and died 25 March 1964. He is buried in the Wiseman Cemetery, Wiseman Arkansas. Married Ellis / Ellen Buchanan Amanda Elizabeth Patterson Montgomery, born October 1883 in Arkansas. Married James K. Polk Rhodes William Ignatious Montgomery ( MY GRANDPA ) born 11 September 1886, Morriston, Arkansas. He died June 1965. Buried in the Marked Tree Cemetery, Marked Tree, Arkansas. Married Susan Emma Lynch Lilly Leeonis Montgomery born 31 March 1880, Fulton County, Arkansas. Married Sherman Herbert Cooper Samuel Leondis Montgomery born 31 March 1890, Morriston, Arkansas. He died 9 February 1984. Married Maggie Alberta Rider We found Sophronia in the 1870 Fulton County census living in the Wiley C. King household and in the 1880 and 1900 Fulton County census married to James. What we are really looking for is some information about her parents and/or siblings. On every census we have found, her parents and Sophronia were supposedly born in Arkansas. In the 1850 census there were three Wiseman's living in Fulton County, that we know of, so we are pining our hopes on one of them. They were all in 1850, Fulton County, Union Township on page 158, Thomas and Mary, Absolem and Nancy and Davenport and Matilda. Part of E-Mail 1 Feb 2001 from: Charles and Dee Colvin chrdcol@gte.net Hi Judie? Nice to meet a distant cousin!! Yes, my mother use to speak of Sophronia Davenport WISEMAN, and her name is among those that were in the family Bible. (Note it was a King Family Bible per Dee Colvin) The Bible has Safronia D. Wiseman Born 24 February 1851 Married James F. Montgomery 6 July 1871 We have also had a letter from Mr. Tom Chapman who is researching the Wiseman family. He wrote: "You can be sure that Sophronia is a descendant of either Martin or Davenport Wiseman - brothers, whose families settled in Arkansas. The lived for quite a few years in Tennessee but were natives of North Carolina - sons of Thomas and Cordelia Wiseman. Thomas was the first son of William and Mary (Davenport ) Wiseman." E-Mail from Fern Estes at earlfernestes@centurytel.net dated 18 March 2003 Jim, In the 1850 census for Fulton Co. AR, Union Township I found Devenport Wiseman, age 25, b. TN; wife Matilda, age 26, b. AL. No children. Looks promising with Sophronia's middle name being Davenport. At this time, not sure of much on Sophronia. In the 1920 Mississippi County Arkansas census William Ignatious (Nash) Montgomery , has Sophronia Davenport ( Wiseman ) Montgomery his mama , my GGrandma born in Arkansas and his daddy born in Arkansas. But we know for sure that his daddy was born in North Carolina. In the 1910 Mississippi County Arkansas census William Ignatious (Nash) Montgomery , has Sophronia Davenport ( Wiseman ) Montgomery his mama , my GGrandma born in Canada and his daddy born in Wyoming. But we know for sure that his daddy was born in North Carolina The info from the 1870 and 1880 Census we have say Sophronia Davenport Wiseman was born in Arkansas. Hello Can any one give me a idea of the early 1900 age for marriage in Fulton County...?? Men? Women?? I have found a lot of my gene pool coming out of Howell County, Missouri and getting married. So many... that I am wondering what was going on in the Viola, Arkansas area and the Howell, county Missouri area... from about 1860 to around the 1930's Puzzled T. F.
