When it finally came back up this afternoon, there were only two emails--not the many dozens that I expected. If you have recently sent mail to me that was returned, please try again. -- Wilma King InterNet: wking@pokynet.com

3. Subject: Mary Ann Blevins Date: Fri, 3 May 2002 10:47:54 EDT From: BrightStar9136@aol.com To: pabst@btc-bci.com Tennessee, The Volunteer State, 1769-1923, Vol. 2 Tennessee the Volunteer State 1769–1923: Volume 2 WILLIAM THOMAS ROBERTS. On the maternal side William Thomas Roberts is likewise descended from Revolutionary stock. Isaac McCammon was born in Surry county, North Carolina, and was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. He married Elizabeth Poindexter Evans, whose first husband was Major Thomas Evans, who won fame for the part he took in the Indian wars in Tennessee and to whom the government made a large grant of land upon which the city of Nashville now stands. At the death of Major Evans, Elizabeth Poindexter Evans married Isaac McCammon and to their union one son and three daughters were born: Margaret, Mary Dewees, Elizabeth and Thomas. Margaret McCammon married Major Francis Pettitt and their children were five in number, namely: Margaret Martha Milner; Francis A.; George D., who was wounded as a soldier of the Confederate forces during the Civil war; Thomas Evans, who also joined the Confederate army and died in the service; and Elizabeth Carolina, who became the wife of Edmund Roberts and the mother of William Thomas Roberts. All of these ancestors migrated from North Carolina to Tennessee, settling in McMinn county. The flintlock gun that Isaac McCammon carried in the Revolutionary war is now in the possession of William Thomas Roberts, who also has in his possession a Confederate flag presented to his maternal uncle, Thomas McCammon Evans Pettit, who was in Captain Gouldy's company, later captain Dick Vandyke's company of the Confederate army. The flag was presented to the uncle by Miss Mary Ann Blevins, who married James Gregory and is still living.

GB07 = Gideon Blackburn's school 1806-1807 (Student roster) SPMS = Spring Place Mission School (Student rosters) NSPMS = New Spring Place Mission School (SPMS restablished in the Western Territory after removal. Student rosters) DET# = Detachment number (from various muster rolls, payroll records and ration receipts; which Detachment did they go west on) IHG = Indian Home Guard (Civil war muster rolls) N-Cher = Native Cherokee (1880 & 1890 Census used the following codes: N-Cher Native Cherokee A-White Adopted White A-Del Adopted Delaware A-Shaw Adopted Shawnee A-Col Adopted Colored etc. SB district = Skin Bayou District, CNW (in 1851 this was changed to Sequoyah District) Roll B: Cherokee that emigrated to the western territory after the 1851 Drennen were simply accepted into the Cherokee Nation. Around 1869 the western Cherokee Nation decided to require citizenship application before a committee. "Roll B", and there's a "Roll A" are lists of groups of emigrants that came west after 1851 (these lists were prepared in 1873) but they didn't include ALL of the emigrants, just those that weren't already recognized as Cherokee by 1869. I've found two more such "Roll"s, much smaller, from 1881 and 1883. 1. [ARFULTON] Answers to Freedmen questions
2. James F. Montgomery
3. Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 13:38:51 EDT From: BrightStar9136@aol.com Hello List, I sent Jim Hicks a post asking two questions for the list. # 1 Are all Freedmen slaves? #2 Were do folks get copies of their own applications? JIM'S REPLY IS- The 1906 Miller and the 1902 Dawes are maintained by the National Archives and copies of the individual applications can be ordered through them ( http://www.nara.gov/ ) these are usually 5 pages in length and contain detailed descriptions of their family for three generations; cost is about $10~$15 including shipping; however, you should have most of the Miller applications on hand and you are welcome to share what's in them. As to if they were all slaves; the answer would be no, they were identified as EITHER slaves or descendants of slaves, some had mixed blood and were also descendants of Cherokee (see George Hammer Brown family). Actually the George Hammer Brown family would be a textbook case to show how the rolls work, how individuals can be traced through the years, and how one family can have brothers and sisters listed as Freedmen in some cases and as Cherokee in others. I wanted to let you all know that the SURNAME REPORTS, are now all posted on the individual surname list at Rootsweb. None of these reports were posted to the general MISC LIST or TOPICS LIST at Rootsweb. I saved them as a special prodject for each of the surname list. So if any of the following first six surnames of the FREEDMEN are in your line, you will have to go to that surname list or list archive to get the info. Those list that are now done are: HICKS BENGE VANN LYNCH BROWN ROSS In the very near future ( about 1 week) around April 25 or 26th, I plan on doing the next 5 which will be: BOWLES WILSON WALTON MAYFIELD KEYS In the following week ( about May 2nd or 3rd ) I plan on doing: TAYLOR GUNTER BOUDINOT MUSGROVE LITTLE Please know that all names on those applications will be done. And I am sure plenty more. I am also working very hard to see if anything can be done on the recent HTML problem, I fear not, but I am looking at the problem. At any rate I hope the next group of recipients are as nice as all of you. Thank you very much !!! I have also requested from Jim Hicks and Barbara Benge a list of what all the abbreviations on the surname reports mean. So hang in there if they have you confused, I will get the list. 1. [ARFULTON] Watkins
2. Hello Everyone I have been looking for information on my GG Grandfather William Watkins. I have no middle name, only that he was married to Dora Kennedy April 17, 1892 in Fulton Co. They had 2 children, Charly Watkins ( spelled just like that) and Littie or Lettie Watkins. Charly married Millie Bell Holloway (they called her Bill). Her Holloway family traveled from Lawrence Co. Tenn. but William Watkins, I have no dates except for the marriage. Most of my family including Charly and Millie are buried at Stateline Cemetary. I do not know if William and Dora are. If any of these names a familiar to anyone, I would be so grateful. Any help with death look-ups for William or Dora would also be appreciated, as they have been my BRICK WALLS for a while. Thanks so much in Advance Paula Gibeault
