Anyone know if any newspapers survived from the Salem area? Or was there a newspaper published during the 1870---1880s? I have found that a newspaper was published in this time frame in Mammoth Springs. I did check in Little Rock years ago and at that time there was no listing of a newspaper in the Salem, Arkansas area. Hoping some have surfaced. Jay yaerohs@aol.com I am a genealogy nut, but I am not cracked. SOUTHWORTH DACUS BLEVINS TWILLEY/TWILLY OXFORD SHURHART? MANES and many others in Fulton County.
Gene, I received a copy of the article of the West Plains Weekly Quill dated April 19, 1934 in which Dr Hunt's death is related. It's copy by Sheila Leisinger, a gdaughter of the Cameron family where Larkin W. Hunt spent his last days. She joined a scanned photo but the resolution was too low so that the text is not readable. But she was kind enough to provide a transcription. It reads: "... Burial will be in Moody Cemetery under the direction of Thornburgh Undertaking Company of West Plains ..." If it is no inconvenience for you, would you mind taking pictures of the other members of the Hunt family. Many thanks again. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks! To my knowledge there was only one school in Salem. I know that Miss Clara Weathers was the daughter of the Doctor, he delivered me! I've been back several times, but I'm trying to put together pieces of a puzzle! Some 30 years ago I sent my daughter to Mrs. McLemore's door and she thought it was me! I have lots more questions for Fulton Co. research, but one thing at a time.....
Faye, Newton Burks was the father of Hugh Burks (my step grandfather). You mentioned having a picture of one of the Grisso Brothers. I think that would be one of the brothers of Harriett (mother of Hugh Burks). Would it be possible to send that picture to me? I would REALLY appreciate it. The Grisso Boy you mentioned who went to Medical School, is probably the one I have heard of that my Grandmother Burks referred to as "old Doc. Grisso" in Seminole, Ok. The GRISSO'S are my husbands cousins! I have an old photograph of one of the two Grisso brothers........need to look to see which one he was. <PRE>My first time to send an E-Mail to FultonCo! I was born in Wheeling, my mother was Dorothy Crouch, father Bill Roberts. We migrated to Florida in 1936. I have been researching the Crouch-Roberts line for some time and still find missing pieces. If anyone knows of my first grade teacher, Mrs. McLemore (?) or Miss Clara Weathers, 2nd grade, or any information about the Salem Elementary school in 1935-36 I would love to know..Volamae in Florida

Sara and Gene, Thanks for your interest in my family. The Hunts you list are indeed relatives. But I didn't know they were buried in West-Plains. Hunt, James Thompson (according to Lilian Hays Oliver in "Some Boone Descendants and Kindred of St. Charles District" born in Louisiana Aug. 27, 1834 and died Feb. 24, 1902 in West Plains) is the brother of Dr Larkin Wesley Hunt. He was harness maker. Both were the sons of Wesley Hunt and Melissa Callaway, a gchild of Daniel Boone. Hunt, Martha L. 16 Dec 1831 - 18 Aug 1920, is James Thompson's spose. Her maiden name is White. Hunt Larkin William 1 Jul 1864 - 2 Oct 1941 (according to Lilian Hays, died Oct. 18, 1942 near Pomona, Howell Co.). He was a barber of West Plains. Hunt, Loretta 8 Jan 1889 - 12 Feb 1966 was Hunt L.W.'s 2d spose. Her maiden name is Huckabey. The maiden name of his 1rst spose was Irene Barrick They had four children: Byron, Robin, Fern and Lee. You relate: Hunt, Infant 25 Oct 1894 - 28 Nov 1894 (son of L.W. & Irene) and Hunt Lee 18 Jun 1868 - 24 Dec 1885 Following the April 19, 1934 edition of the West Plains Weekly Quill, Dr Larkin Wesley Hunt was buried in Moody. "Funeral service will be held this afternoon at Moody and will be in the charge of Rev. W.L. Myers, Pastor of the Methodist Church of West Plains. Burial will be in Moody Cemetery ..." Gene, I received your e-mail. I have never been in Moody. Thanks again for your help. Louise-Marie Hunt gwijns@skynet.be Belgium >
Hi Volamae, You migrated the wrong way. Most people left here for Oklahoma then on to California.:-) If you will give me some time, I will try to locate someone that can give us information on McLemore and Clara Weathers, also Salem Elementary. Do you have Mrs McLemore's first name? Were these Salem teachers? My knowledge is in Western Fulton County Cemeteries but I know a couple of people that might be able to help us. One lady that is very knowledgeable on the local people of Fulton County lives close to Wheeling. I would hope that someone on the list could help you better but we will try. Louise and Sara, Is the younger Larkin in Oak Lawn Cemetery, West Plains, a Junior? If that is the case then the older Larkin might be buried in Moody Cemetery. It might be an unreadable stone. Sara, what do you think? We plan to go to West Plains saturday. We will go by Moody Cemetery and check for a readable stone with Larkins name on it. If we find it we will shoot pict of it. Louise, would you like for me to shoot pictures of other Hunt family members in Oak Lawn? Will be glad to. Do you have a copy of the West Plains Quill article or have you read it to verify the information? Gene __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Gene, I would greatly appreciate if you could take a picture of my ggfather Larkin Wesley Hunt's grave in Moody. He lived at the end of his life in Arkansas just across the border of Missouri. That's great, Gene. In a senior moment [another one] I mislaid my camera or I would volunteer to do that. Hello, Louise-Marie I saw your email and took the liberty of checking the Moody, MO, cemetery in the Howell County, Missouri, cemetery book published in 1988 by the South Central Missouri Genealogy Society. Larkin Wesley Hunt is not listed in the Moody, MO, cemetery (which is not far from the Arkansas line and holds many of my family's ancestors). There is a Dr. Hunt there, but no dates. However, this is what I find in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in the city of West Plains, Missouri: Hunt, Larkin W. 1 Jul 1864 - 2 Oct 1941 Hunt, Loretta 8 Jan 1889 - 12 Feb 1966 Hunt, Infant 25 Oct 1894 - 28 Nov 1894 (son of L.W. & Irene) Hunt, James T. 15 Sep 1833 - 24 Feb 1902 Hunt, Martha L. 16 Dec 1831 - 18 Sug 1820 Hunt Lee 18 Jun 1868 - 24 Dec 1885 Perhaps some of these are relatives of the Larkin Wesley Hunt you are looking for. Gene, Thanks for you offer and if you are in Byron Cemetery I would appreciate pictures of the Bray's that are buried there. I have found that many of Benjamin Franklin Bray and Mary Elizabeth Byler Bray are buried in the Byron Cemetery. Sorry, Paula. There is no James H. Watkins in the Howell County book that I have. All the Watkinses seem to be in Union Hill, Evergreen and Fowler cemeteries. Hello, Gene I have a copy of the "Howell County Missouri Cemeteries 1795-1987" book. The cemeteries are not listed per townships, and I don't see one named Benton. However, there is a Bennetts Chapel Cemetery in Section 33, Township 25, Range 7 West, next to Bennetts Chapel Church. South Fork Cemetery is in Sec.33, Twp 23, R9. Here is the accompanying story: "South Fork Cemetery is located on Highway E. about ΒΌ mile south of South Fork, Mo. This burial ground was first used sometime during the Civil War when women came here to bury their husbands, victims of the bushwackers. Their names are unknown and the graves are not marked, only the region is known. Land was first donated by the Black family whose daughter Letha married Charley Kenslow. This original two acres was divided equally between Cross Roads School and the burial ground. The school was renamed South Fork and the building was sold and moved away in 1959-1960. Mrs. R.B. Sparks then gave more land to the cemetery to carry its boundaries out to Highway E. The plat map and other records are kept by Mrs. Noble Clark, 503 Arkansas, West Plains, Mo." Bear in mind that the book was printed in 1988. If Mrs. Clark no longer keeps the records, you could contact South Central Genealogy Society c/o West Plains Public Library, Broadway, West Plains, Missouri, 65775. If you have names you would like looked up, let me know. Happy Hunting. Sara From: "Genrit" <genrit@yahoo.com> Can anyone help me. I am looking for the names and or locations of the cemeteries in Benton and Southfork Townships, in Howell County, Missouri, that are close, say 10 miles to the Fulton County line. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gene Simpson genrit@yahoo.com
