    3. When my husband and I managed the Mammoth Spring Democrat before the merge with the Salem Headlight, both newspapers were owned by Mr. Don Banzett. Mr. Banzett sold the papers to Mr. Frank Martin II of the West Plains Daily Quill and after several years the Mammoth Spring Democrat was closed and Dale went to Salem to work with the papers. The merge was formed the Salem paper covering Fulton County. Mr. Martin then sold the papers to a syndicate which formed what is now (I believe) the newspaper. Before the merge of the Salem Headlight and the Mammoth Spring Democrat copies of the papers were sent to the Arkansas Press Association in Little Rock weekly. Also each year a bound edition of the year in papers was sent to the newspapers. After the merge, I do not know where these bound copies of the papers went Dale Langston, Managing Editor, and I made all volumes in the office at the Mammoth Spring Democrat available to everyone to research. There were also boxes of old p! ictures, which still may be at the Salem Headlight office (I doubt it, but they may be there). Then all the old copies were sent to Little Rock to be microfilmed. If you have any questions, I suggest you contact the Arkansas Press Association. 3. Georgina, All what we know about Larkin's parents is what Lilian Hays write in " Some Boone Descendants ...: "Melissa Callaway Hunt died Jan. 28, 1837, leaving a three years old boy (James Thompson Hunt) and a three months old boy (Dr Larkin Wesley Hunt). After Melissa Hunt's death, the father , Wesley Hunt, (born Aug. 1814, Kentucky) left the two baby boys in the care of a neighbor and started from Louisiana, Mo., their home, to cross the Mississippi River to see if his sister in Illinois would take care of the children. Wesley Hunt was never heard from again. It was presumed that he drowned while crossing the Missippi River ..." We neither know his sister's name nor her husband's. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Louise-Marie Hunt.

    3. Fulton County has only one newspaper called "The News" They print "The South Missourian News" for Thayer Missouri area and "Villager Journal" for the Cherokee Village area. The News is a consolidation of "The Salem Headlight", "The Mammoth Spring Democrat" and "The Sharp County Record" The Salem Headlight dates back many years and The News prints a copy of the front page of the Headlight 40 years ago in every issue. 2. Who were the parents of your Larkin Westley Hunt? I have a Larkin Hunt who was the son of a John Hunt, possibly from Alabama originally, ended up in Arkansas. I believe John died in Jonesboro. My Larkin was the brother of Margaret "MIlly" Louisa Hunt, who married Marion Pinkney Thomas. Any connections, possibly? Thanks, Georgiana

    2. Ever try shaving creme on the stones? A good spraying of shaving creme, and a soft brush works wonders, just temporary, but enough to get a photo. I'm a cemetary nut, and I'vegot chiggers, poison ivy, and other stuff just looking for ancestors! Have fun! Volamae in Florida, now....

    3. Violamae, The only things I have used on a stone are Charcoal powder or Corn starch. Neither are harmful to stone. Only a nylon bristle or a soft brass bristle brush is best without anything else. Water makes reading worse. As for photography, the stones should be facing west (and most are) so it is better to shoot in the afternoon when the sun is shining on the stone. If you have to shoot in the morning, when the sun is behind the stone, make yourself a reflector from a piece of flat cardboard at least 2ft by 3ft and cover it with aluminum foil. Have someone hold it to reflect light on to the stone. If you have a camera with adjustable shutter speed or f-stop, then bracket your exposures one stop over, one normal, and one under. I have been able to read one, usually a stop under, that you cannot read at normal exposure. I have shot some pictures and have been shocked at the fact that I could read the picture when I could not read the stone in the cemetery. Makes you wonder if you didn't have some unseen help. Gene genrit@yahoo.com Also try using the reflector at different angles to create better shadows on the letters. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. There are two lines of thought when it comes to cleaning a cemetery stone. 1. Don't clean the stone because you might harm it. 2. Clean the stone so you can read the name. (1)If you don't clean the stone then it is worthless. It is not going to get better by itself. (2)Clean the stone just enough to read the name and dates USING GOOD JUDGEMENT ON HOW TO CLEAN IT. If you have a stone that crumbles, than the stone is gone and the names are lost forever. I have read many pages on how to clean a stone and I question the quality of information on many of these instructions. I have cleaned a lot of stones and haven't harmed one yet. These were only stones that were unreadable and I always get permission from the cemetery board, the county, or the family before I clean. I have had a lot of people thank me as they can now read the names. It comes down to good judgement, common sense and experience. My idea of a perfect vacation is "A bottle of water (to drink), a clipboard, and a cemetery. My wife and I are dedicated to the recording of names and dates of our ancestors for the use in future generations. We have inventoried over 50 cemeteries and supervised another 60 cemetery or so. Our special interest is to record those people whose stones are unreadable, or marked with a rock. If you go into any cemetery that we have completed, you will not be able to find any stone that we have cleaned. My I refer you to AR-Cemeteries. Check Baxter and Fulton Counties for my work. I am in the process of adding many more to this list. AR-Cemeteries: http://www.rootsweb.com/~arcemete/arcem.htm Please us my personal email for any response. 3. Gene, I'm sure you'll be careful cleaning a gravemarker but it won't hurt to re-real one of the several helpful hints webpages about the process such as the one on "How to Clean Gravemarker" at: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/2670/CEMETERY-002.htm Good Luck, Travis ===================================== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Genrit" <genrit@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [ARFULTON] Larkin Westley Hunt. > Louise and Sara > No pictures yet. 3. There is currently a paper in the Salem area. It is the Area Wide Media. They print 5 different papers with the subscription paper being The News. 3. Louise and Sara No pictures yet. Drove to Moody cemetery and checked every stone. Some are very hard to read. Some are unreadable as in most cemeteries. I might take a soft bristle brass brush and work on several stones but will need permission from the people in charge of the cemetery to do that. West Plains is a good little drive from Moody and it was hot, so we will go shoot the other Hunt graves as soon as it cools off a little bit. In the mean time we will keep working on Larkins location in the moody cemetery. Gene __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
