I haved traced my family to Burgaw, North Carolina. I found former slaves Benjamin and Martha Henry Bordeaux. They were born in approximately 1818 and 1834 respectively. My desire is to try and find what plantation they resided on and to get copies of the plantation record in order to try and find out the name of their parents and perhaps go beyond that. I visited Wilmington, NC, the Lattimer House, last summer. I was able to piece together some bits of information. After the War, they both comleted a certification of co-habitation stating that they had been together as husband and wife since 1853. As I was researching on the internet, I found out that some of the BORDEAUXS had moved to Drew County and were said to be former slave owners in North Carolina. During my research of the index for the 1870 census for Burgaw, New Hanover County, North Carolina:Lincoln Township, I found several BORDEAUXS both black and white. An interesting point was that Benjamin and Martha 's children had the same name as some of the white BORDEAUXS, for example:Margaret A., Martha, and Caroline. Perhaps they did this to honor their slave owners. Any new leads would be appreciated. I do have a better paper trail for Benjamin and Marth's descendants.
