Hi, everyone, Here is a new mailing list at Rootsweb that I thought some of you might be interested in. Instructions for how to join are given at the end of the message. Enjoy! --Melissa What is Old-Words? It's a forum for those of us who want to learn more about the words, names, terms, dialects, and writing of our ancestors. The emphasis of the list will deal, but not exclusively, with the use of English in North America before 1950....but some times we may drag in terms from older English as they are relevant and interesting. We will cover technical terminology of eras past, old medical jargon, old manuscript abbreviations, information about old writing conventions like the long s, spelling evolution, name preferences and patterns, the effect of dialect on spelling and word choice, and anything else about word usage that we may find useful and interesting in the pursuit of gaining knowledge about the language of our ancestors. This is to help us read old manuscripts better, to broaden our minds, and to help us understand our forefathers and mothers better. To join, send e-mail based on your choice of list modes: mail mode: OLD-WORDS-L-request@rootsweb.com with message SUBSCRIBE digest mode: OLD-WORDS-D-request@rootsweb.com with message SUBSCRIBE
