The 2000 Drew County Historical Journal came out this week. It has an article in it about V. J. Trotter. They have printed several letters in it to show his wide range of interest. One letter caught my interest. I will print part of it for you here and get your comment on it. "Barrow & Duval Attorneys-at-law West Markham Street Little Rock, Ark. Oct. 25th, 1884 Mr. V. J. Trotter Monticello Dear Sir & Friend, Will you please write me by return mail on next Wednesday morning where Hal Crook is living & with whom? Some one told me he was still with Jack Erwin & some one else told me he was living in town. Will you please keep the inclosed letter, and send word to him to come & see you, and then read it to him. It is regard to getting Daisy Crook pardoned. Hal Crook knows if she can be pardoned, I am the one who can more likely get it done than anyone else, as I prosecuted her and convicted her to hang and really did not think the evidence was sufficient, and wrote to the Gov. to commute it to imprisonment in the Penitentiary. He wanted to employ me to get it two years ago, but I did not think the time had come then. Now is more favorable and I am willing to undertake it. Virgil, please say nothing about this matter only to Hal Crook, as I know I will meet with better success to work it quietly." It is signed J. C. Barrow There is more to the letter but that is the part that really interested me. Does anyone know anything about this matter? I am sure they are related to me and am wondering what Daisy might have done to be hanged. The more we dig the more interesting our families become. Mary
