Hi Everyone, I remember reading a while back that there is some information on 19th century Drew County doctors at the Drew County Museum. I had previously inquired about Dr. S.G. Twitty, but he apparently wasn't mentioned. I have another doctor to ask about. He was the doctor who attended my great great grandfather when he died in 1880. The doctor's name was A.B. Tardy. Is it possible to find out if there is any information on this Dr. Tardy or any medical journals or records that might be available? Thanks much for any information you can provide. Is there any information on the following doctors? Dr. Robinson Dr. Wright My gg grandfather (James L. Nelson) came to Drew County in the late 1850's. His daughter Sarah Virginia Nelson Wright Taylor (born GA, 1851) was said to have worked for one then the other doctor, and learned "nursing," before she married in 1871 to Jesse Marion Wright. Thanks, Bill -- Bill Nelson INTERNET: [email protected]
I have been trying to get some information from Dr. Robinson's grandson for the museum as we do not have anything at all on him. I am not sure about Dr. Wright. I will check if I get to make it to the museum today. We have got rain, rain and more rain here. Roads are getting under water so I may not be able to make it. If not I will check on them Sunday. Bill, This is what I found on Dr. Socrates G. Robertson 1834-1909 in "Drew County Arkansas HISTORY OF MEDICINE" by Dr. and Mrs. Johnnie Porter Price. Could this be the "Dr. Robinson" you are looking for? "Socrates G. Robertson, M.D., physician and druggist, Monticello, Arkansas listed by Goodspeed in 1890 and "that Dr. Robertson has made himself eminently successful as a physician, is abundantly testified by the fact that he has practiced in this county for over twenty five years." He was born in Summerville, Fayette County, Tennessee, November 1834. He was reared on a farm and clerked in a store and then began the study of medicine. He graduated University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1860. He began his practice of medicine in Jefferson County, Arkansas and during the war was a surgeon in the Army. He was in hospital service in the army in Little Rock and Medical Examiner for conscripts for 2 years and president of board. In October, 1865 he removed to Monticello where he was in active practice until 1890. In 1867 he established a drug store. In 1890 Goodspeed ends Dr. Robertson with "He has an extensive practice and is a first-class physician, his kind, agreeable manner and warm, sympathetic nature, rendering him a welcome visitor to the sick room and wherever known he is highly esteemed. He was married in 1865 to Miss Sara McGehee and they have 3 living children." He died January 29, 1909. Miss Janice and Grace Dilday of Monticello are great nieces of Dr. Robertson." The only Dr. Robinson listed is Thomas Jefferson Robinson who was born July 9, 1874. That would make him too young to be the Dr. Robinson you are looking for. I did not find any information on a Dr. Wright. Arkansas started licensing doctors in 1903. I do not think they would have anything that would help you but you might try Goodspeed. I hope that this is of some help to you.
