Thank you for the clues from John Riner's probate record. Definitely, the link to Richard Knowles is worth pursuing. Is there anything in the probate record which indicates where to look for additional information on the claims against John's estate (references to court claim books, etc)? In any case, it's definitely helpful to know that there was a relationship of some kind between Richard Knowles and the Riners. There may be some records in the Drew County courthouse showing transactions between the two families. If Nancy was Richard's daughter, it is interesting to think that he would file a claim against the estate instead of forgiving the debt.
