Gazette Feb. 1, 1910, Monticello - Finding a bottle of carbolic acid in a room, where she had been left to play in the absence of the nurse, Mercedes Caples, a 3 year old inmate of the Orphans' Home of Monticello, drank the contents and died within a few minutes. The nurse was gone from the room only a few minutes and how the child got the bottle from the shelf where it stood is a mystery.
