Hi Randy, I am a Burks descendant and believe that John F. Burks was a brother to my Lee Harris Burks of Lauderdale Co, TN and also a brother to William Pinkney Burks of Andrew Co, AR. You might try contacting Bobby Gilliam [email protected] who is a descendant of William Pinkney Burks. He could probably help you there. I have a Burks website at http://members.tripod.com/~bjcasey/index.html that could help you too. Posted on: Drew Co. Ar Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Drew/10129 Surname: CARLTON ------------------------- I haven't been able to determine that this Wm C. Carlton is mine. All I know about a William Carlton is that he was on the 1850 Itawamba Co., MS census as a child of James C. Carlton, before James moved to White Co., AR in 1860. I have found two of James' children, Francis Marion and Susan in AR, but none of the others. James' daughter Tabetha married James M. Files in MS and remained there. I suspect, but cannot prove, that James C. Carlton's middle name was, Columbus.

Rebecca, Thank you so much for this. It gives me a bit of insight into the life and times of this doctor who administered to my great great grandfather at the time of his death. You are wonderful. Thank you for sharing this. Sandy

Sandy, According to the autobiography of Rev. W. T. Tardy, "Trials and Triumps," 1910, his father was A. B. Tardy, who lived first @ Troy in Drew County and later moved to Sand Creek, about six miles from Monticello. He wrote, "My father, A. B. Tardy...was born in Tuscaloosa. He was instructed in the science of medicine by his cultured father, but by some strange lapse in fortune, or mistake in educational plans, he never attended college. Neither father nor son ever made any money out of his profession. They did the practice on their several plantations and for neighbors who needed their ministrations, but they did not know how to charge nor how to collect. They gloried in their professional title of doctor and both were marvelously successful practitioners in the old-fashioned school of medicine. I remember very clearly that my father in the country, in Arkansas, was regarded as a pneumonia specialist. The rural folk said that he and his fly blisters were a dead shot against the dread plague of winter. Many is the time that I have carried from my mother fresh, cool, thick and delicious buttermilk to the emaciated, but convalescent pneumonia patients of my father. The children of the household used to say that my father practiced medicine for the good and glory of it, and made us work like galley slaves on the farm for a living." [p. 3] Rev. Tardy helped found the College of Marshall, later to become East Texas Bible College in 1914. There are several quotes from him in Old Times. Rebecca >He was the doctor who attended my >great great grandfather when he died in 1880. The doctor's name was >A.B. Tardy. Is it possible to find out if there is any information on >this Dr. Tardy or any medical journals or records that might be >available? Thanks much for any information you can provide. > >Sandy Lewis >[email protected] >
Many of you have probably received this message from other lists, but for those who don't know about the upcoming scheduled Rootsweb outage, please see more information below. I would expect this outage to affect mailing lists, web sites, and message boards at Rootsweb. Bill, This is what I found on Dr. Socrates G. Robertson 1834-1909 in "Drew County Arkansas HISTORY OF MEDICINE" by Dr. and Mrs. Johnnie Porter Price. Could this be the "Dr. Robinson" you are looking for? "Socrates G. Robertson, M.D., physician and druggist, Monticello, Arkansas listed by Goodspeed in 1890 and "that Dr. Robertson has made himself eminently successful as a physician, is abundantly testified by the fact that he has practiced in this county for over twenty five years." He was born in Summerville, Fayette County, Tennessee, November 1834. He was reared on a farm and clerked in a store and then began the study of medicine. He graduated University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1860. He began his practice of medicine in Jefferson County, Arkansas and during the war was a surgeon in the Army. He was in hospital service in the army in Little Rock and Medical Examiner for conscripts for 2 years and president of board. In October, 1865 he removed to Monticello where he was in active practice until 1890. In 1867 he established a drug store. In 1890 Goodspeed ends Dr. Robertson with "He has an extensive practice and is a first-class physician, his kind, agreeable manner and warm, sympathetic nature, rendering him a welcome visitor to the sick room and wherever known he is highly esteemed. He was married in 1865 to Miss Sara McGehee and they have 3 living children." He died January 29, 1909. Miss Janice and Grace Dilday of Monticello are great nieces of Dr. Robertson." The only Dr. Robinson listed is Thomas Jefferson Robinson who was born July 9, 1874. That would make him too young to be the Dr. Robinson you are looking for. I did not find any information on a Dr. Wright. Arkansas started licensing doctors in 1903. I do not think they would have anything that would help you but you might try Goodspeed. I hope that this is of some help to you.
