    1. Re: [ARDREW-L] obits etc.
    2. Terri Lee Wolfe
    3. I can't remember if I ever sent this to you or not. This would have been your Pat's namesake. He was my grandfather's youngest brother. He died just before his 21st birthday and nearly broke his mother and daddy's hearts. Grandpa Wolfe, who would be your husband's half uncle, would take a chair and sit out in the cemetery on Sunday mornings for months after this incident occurred. The brother never completely got over it, and the wives were trained not to mention it. When I was a child about six years old, Jim Ferguson passed down the streets up town, and I was just learning to read. I was reading aloud what was on the side of the drug store , and my Memaw told me to hush. Not understanding, I was busily asking why when she clamped her hand on my mouth. As the man passed, it was as if a cold breeze had blown because no one moved or said a word....stone silence and stiffness. At another time , we were visiting Mr. Alfred Lagrone and his wife Mrs. Bernice (feguson..sister to Jim) lagrone's home. My grandfather was her 1/2 lst cousin, and Memaw was Mr. Alfred's lst cousin. They always remained friends in spite of the problems, but on this particular day, Jim came to visit. We had just arrived, and I had just gotten started playing with all the grandchildren when Memaw came and told me we had to leave. I naturally protested that we had just gotten there, but I was hustled out of the yard anyway. About six months after the incident of the death, Johhny Buck Ferguson, who was just a boy, surrendered to preach, and he showed up at Prairie Grove Church. There was a testimonial service, and no one knew he was there until he stood up to testify. When my grandfather heard his voice, he got up and started out of the church. No other uncle was there that day, but my Aunt Edna wolfe, Frank's wife, and my aunt Hazel wolfe, Young's wife, followed. My mother was about l2 years old and tried to get up and leave, too. However, my grandmother made her sit still. When Johnny Buck saw my Grandie get up, he took out the back door and ran off. My grandfather just went and sat in the wagon. After church, my mother wanted to know why my grandmother did not leave also. My grandmother told her that if she had left, my grandfather might not have ever had the nerve to come back to church. Therefore, she wanted him to remain there for them so that he would have to face the people and get over the incident. This Johnny Buck is still alive, and he remained a preacher if I'm not mistaken. Ironically, his mother was Mae LEE Ferguson, who was my grandfather's lst cousin on his mother's side. Therefore, the fight and killing was an 1/2 Uncle to Pat, his 1/2 lst cousin, and his 1/2 2nd(lst cousin). He was shot, stabbed, and had his head split with an axe. My mother always considered him her favorite uncle (I'm sure it was because of his young age), and she was very emotional about this incident. Since it was before my time, it doesn't seem so poignant to me. I even taught the son of Jim Ferguson in later years. He was a very sweet and polite kid. It just goes to show that time changes a lot of things, but bad things have been happening for a long time. Anyway, I thought you might like to add this to your stories about those mysterious Wolfes. >March 5, 1935 page 2 col 2: Monticello March 4 - A dispute over a race between two farm horses yesterday brought death to one man, severe injuries to another and the arrest of a third. Tat (sic) Wolfe, 22, was killed by a charge from a shotgun, alleged to have been fired by Jimmy Ferguson. It was said that Ferguson had been badly cut on the face and neck by Wolfe before he fired. At the coroner's inquest, John Buck Ferguson was held in connection with the killing. Officers said that a double-bitted ax was found near the scene of Wolfe's death and that this angle of the affair has not yet been explained. The killing occurred at Ladelle, 15 miles south of her last night. It was said that an argument started between Jimmy Ferguson and Wolfe over the horse race early in the afternoon. The horses were owned by relatives of Ferguson and Wolfe. Sheriff Cruce, who investigated, said that he was told that several other persons were involved in the altercation. Jimmy Ferguson! > was brought to the hospital here. It is believed that he will recover from his injuries. > Footnote: According to my wolfes, the only witness my Uncle Pat had was a colored man, and their word was not taken too seriously back then. I'd love to find the trial records, but thus far I have not. BETH

    3. This is a wonderful government mapping site that uses the Tiger Map Server at the U. S. Census Bureau. On the opening page, type in the name of a feature that you would like to have directions to - such as Wilmar Cemetery - select "Arkansas" from the state box - in Feature Type - put in "cemetery" and then click on "Send Query". It will give a chart that shows the co-ordinates for the feature that you selected. Then, on that page (underneath the chart - click on "Show Feature Location". You will get a map of the U. S. showing where that feature is and a map of the local area. You can Zoom In and Zoom out (even keep Zooming In until you get streets). GREAT SITE!!!!! You can find where those old cemeteries are located. http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnisform.html Carolyn jhaisty@tcac.com

    3. I guess Dudley got off free because on Jan 29, 1903, the "Eagle" [Ashley Co paper] reported, "Dudley Wolfe...was shot and killed by the accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of Bob Neal, in the Beouf Swamp a few days ago. They were out hog hunting, and it seems that Bob had caught a hog with his hands and was trying to hold the animal, with the gun also in his hands, as Mr. Wolfe came up to where he was. In the scuffle with the hog, the gun was discharged, the load striking Mr. Wolfe and killing him." In the 1860 Ashley Co., Ar census - Bearhouse #110 Ellen Scott age 37 born Al. is listed with children James, Bettie, Matilda, Wilson and William. In the 1860 Drew Co. Bearhouse/Lacy #227 she is listed as J. J. Harvey 45 born Ga., Ellen age 37 ms. and James M. Harvey, and Thomas J. Harvey. 1870 Drew County, Ar. Bearhouse Twp Monticello P. 3. Carolyn, do you have any idea where this Nicholson came from before Napolean & the Drew Co. connection. I have a Nicholson line in Clarke Co., MS. Also, were these Hollangers the same as the Hollingers still in Monticello, who came from down on the eastern edge of the Prairie at Midway. Mr. Will Hollinger, Mrs. Dick Thurman, Mrs. Donald Bedwell Lee, etc. (Henry was Oscar's dad if I am not mistaken, and he was a brother to the above, too.) Just curious.BETH

I was going to UAM about two years ago searching for anything on Prairie Grove in the old papers. I know what you are talking about because a usually carried about $l0.00 worth of dimes each visit and rarely left with any money in my pocket. I always found stuff I thought other people would enjoy. I got the wedding announcement for the Welch(Jackson's sister), ancestor of spivey, and Mr. Charles and James Jackson both got such kicks out of it. Therefore, I never regretted any of my dimes because more times than not the recipients were "tickled pink." Thanks for your efforts, Jann.

    1. [ARDREW-L] Children of Levi Peacock
    2. John Haisty
    3. All of you reading this list who have connections and corrections to this posting please notify me. Many descendants of Levi Peacock live in south Arkansas. I am helping the historian of the Peacock Family Association of the South in his efforts to compile an updated version of his 1982 editon of "The Children of Levi Peacock". The following is for the family of a sister of my husband's great grandmother, Harriet Elizabeth Peacock. Jared Peacock is my husband's direct lineage back from Harriet. Here are the children of Jared Peacock and his wife Martha (maiden name unknown): Elbert S. Peacock m. Demarious Tennessee Townsen Harriet Elizabeth Peacock m. Jacob C. Davidson, James Haisty and Jennings D. Crowell Mary Ann Peacock m. William Winfield Holmes Thomas Peacock Jared Peacock Henry Hardy Peacock Nancy Rebecca Peacock m. Jesse M. Nicholson Ellen Peacock *********************************************** The daughter of Jared and Martha posted at this time is: Nancy Rebecca who married Jesse M. Nicholson. NANCY REBECCA PEACOCK (ca. 1854-78) was about 13 years old when her father died, and went to live at Florence with her uncle Pearson Peacock. On Jan. 14, 1874, she married Jesse M. Nicholson (No. 1836-Apr. 13, 1903), who was then living in Arkansas County - the marriage license had been issued in Napoleon, although the ceremony was performed in Drew County by Rev. John Dickson. Nicholson served with the 16th Arkansas and later with Wright's Cavalry in the Civil War. He enlisted in the cavalry unit Jan. 11, 1864, in Arkansas County, and was captured four days later in Jefferson County without having been paid. He had only two children by Nancy Peacock: William Mayberry (July 25, 1875-Dec.11, 1959, m. Cornelia Coopwood) and Maggie (ca. 1878-1911, m. Samuel B. Graves). It is not certain where they lived, but it may have been Clear Creek Township, at the northwestern edge of Drew County. After his second marriage to Zilla Ann Kate Neilson (Aug. 8, 1866-1946) on Nov. 10, 1882, he moved to Wilmar, Saline Township. Jesse and Zilla had seven more children: ADA (Dec. 1884, m William Upshaw), SALLIE (Aug. 1886, m John Logan DeArmond), JESSE (Mar. 1889-1993), METTE (Aug. 1890), EUNICE (Apr. 1893), EDWARD (Jan. 1895) and ETHEL (Jan. 1897). Jesse applied for a Confederate pension June 19, 1901, on grounds of being "incapacitated for manual labor by reason of age and disease". His widow Zilla put in her own application May 27, 1905. To keep her pension, she filled out an official questionnaire Feb. 12, 1932, by which time she was living at Warren, Bradley County, with her daughter Mrs. Allie Sawyer. William M. Nicholson and Cornelia Coopwood (Oct. 20, 1883-Oct. 7, 1980, daughter of Benjamin J. Coopwood and Lola Sibley) lived at Wilmar, where they rented farm, until World War I; then moved to Bradley County, a little north of Warren. (Both are buried at Union Cemetery in Rye, Cleveland County). Their children were (ELVIN JAMES m. Ethel White ; children [Mary Essie, m. James E. Graves (born ca. 1881, son of William F. and Fannie Graves) lived in West Pennington Township, Bradley County, where he was a fireman at a sawmill. His wife Maggie (Nicholson) operated a boarding house, and her half-sister Sallie DeArmond was a cook there. Their children were Samuel B. Jr. (ca. 1907); William A. (1909). After Maggie died, Samuel moved to Desha county, where he was living in 1920 with his second wife Julia (born ca. 1888). ************************************************** The family of Nancy Rebecca Peacock Nicholson was unknown to the children of her sister Harriet Elziabeth Peacock Haisty until I received the first "rough draft" of the chapter on Jesse Peacock for the upcoming book. Any help in correcting or filling in names will be most helpful and will be passed on to the author. I hope that I have extracted the names properly. This a "rough draft" and I pass on errors, etc. that I find in what he sends me. Many of the names in the book seemed to migrate to the Possum Valley area. Hayes, Bush, White, etc. I have lots of information on the Peacocks who came to Drew Co. on the wagon train with John Harden Breedlove. The Breedloves, Harpers, Hoovers, Crains, Tilghmons, Poseys, Mullis, Hollanger, and on and on are listed in this book. I hope you find a relative. Carolyn
