    1. [ARDREW-L] What's a GEDCOM? attempt to answer
    2. Melissa Jones
    3. Hi Terry, There are no dumb questions here. :-) We're all here to learn from each other and to help when we can. As Davie mentioned, GEDCOM can be considered to be the "least common denominator" in sharing genealogy data. In fact, maybe it stands for GEnealogical Data COMmon (format) or some such. (I am just making this up; I don't know off-hand what it stands for). This is a format created by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Most (all??) genealogy software programs (Family Tree Maker, Reunion, etc.) have an option to export and import GEDCOMs. In this way, I can exchange my database with Davie, or Rebecca, or Jann, even if they use a different software than I do to input their genealogical data. Personally, I use Reunion for Macintosh (no affiliation, just a happy user). So when I get ready to share part of my database with Davie, I'll choose "export GEDCOM" from Reunion's pull-down menu. This puts my data into a common format understood by both our software programs. Then I'll e-mail the file to Davie, and Davie will go to his software and choose "import GEDCOM", choosing the file I just sent him. This will get my data into his database with a minimal amount of fuss on his part. Hope this helps, Melissa At 2:48 PM -0600 11/2/98, twheeler@telemedtoday.com wrote: >Okay, here are the stupid questions of the week. What's a GEDCOM? 3. Misc Roll # 1 (end of roll) 1877: IN MEMORY: Young R. Royal born October 29, 1812; died June 6th, 1867, aged 54 yrs, 7 months, 17 days. The subject of this sketch was born in Sampson Co., NC where he resided until 1839. In 1838 he professed the Religion of Jesus Christ, and united himself with the Missionary Baptist Church. In 1839 he removed to Yallabusha Co., Miss., and united himself with the Missionary Baptist Church called, Red-Grass, by which church he was, in 1840, licensed to preach. In 1842 he removed to what is now Drew county, ( then Bradley), Ark. In the fall of 1842 he again returned to Yallabusha county, Miss., and was, by Red-Grass Church, duly ordained as a Minister of the Gospel. Soon after his ordination he returned to his adopted home of Arkansas. In 1848 he, together with Rev. U.H. Parker, John Meek and R.P. Pulley, formed the convention which framed the Constitution of the present Bartholomew Baptist Association. On the organization of said association he was elected as its Clerk; which posi! ! tion he held till 1862, when he was chosen moderator, which honorable position he held till his death. His course as Moderator was marked with distinguished ability as a presiding officer, eliciting the entire confidence of his Brethren. At the organization of Drew County, in 1846, he was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court, which office he held for twelve years giving entire satisfaction to his constituents. Being a Pioneer of the Gospel Ministry, he devoted so much of his time and energy and labored with such zeal that in 1862 his health began to fail when he was forced to almost retire from his ministerial duties. His death was caused by disease of the lungs. He has left a large number of friends and relations to mourn his death and his loss has caused a vacuum in the religious world which will be hard to fill. He retained his mental faculties until his last moments. He died in full confidence of the Blessed Master, and expressed his confidence in realizing a blessed ! ! immortality beyond the grave. 1. [ARDREW-L] snip, snip
    2. Melissa Jones
    3. Hi, guys, this is your friendly list-mom talking. :-) Please remember to snip out excess material when replying to messages. We're seeing threads come across lots of times, and messages are getting longer and longer. If you don't know how to do this, here's a quick lesson: (1) Click "reply" (or do whatever action you normally do to reply to a message) (2) Look at all the text that got automatically copied over into your e-mail message, before you even start typing (3) Decide what information from the original you need to leave in so that your reply will make sense to others (may be a couple of sentences, or a paragraph...most likely, we don't need the entire original message, especially if it's pages long) (4) Take your mouse, click and hold over the beginning (or end) of the section you want to remove (5) Drag your mouse down (or up, depending on where you started highlighting) to highlight all the text you want to remove (6) When you reach the end of the segment you want to delete, let up on your mouse button (7) Find the "Delete" key on your keyboard and press it. DON'T use the delete option in one of the pull-down menus of your software--this will delete your entire message Now your message should contain only the segment of the original message which is germane to your reply. (How d'ya like that 25-cent word, Beth?) If your e-mail software works differently than expected when following the instructions above, please write me privately and we will try to figure out the delete options with your particular e-mail software. Thanks for reading! Melissa
