    3. Re: exporting specific information: I've found that making a duplicate copy of my master family list and then deleting out all unwanted individuals in the copy works for me. I can then have every line separate if I like. I keep these extra files as back up and usually work with just the master list (which has it's own back up!). Yes, it takes time but it also helps when sharing gedcoms with other researchers. Jo-Ann

We will be in Ark. from Dec. 18 (Friday) to Dec. 27 (Sunday), and of course I want to go over to Drew County when the museum & archives are open that weekend before Christmas. I have ordered Mr. Willis's book by mail but was told the publication & ship date aren't til December. I hope my book arrives before we fly over there, so I can have it signed. Rebecca (and all), Not to create any more work for you, but what if we could all help put together another book on Drew County history? Maybe where "Old Times" left off? I was talking via e-mail with Pat Cowan yesterday, and hit upon a neat idea---making a video journal of Possum Valley, the homesteads where our ancestors lived, the cemeteries, etc. For folks that haven't been to Arkansas, or haven't been there in years, this would be a good way to share how & where our ancestors lived. Also, Beth, at one time you had mentioned it was hard getting young people interested in the history of the area. Does your school have a journalism department? Creative writing? 1. Re: [ARDREW-L] What's a GEDCOM?
    2. W. David Daugherty
    3. Amy: I don't know of a way yet to limit whcih members get "exported". You may want to Email support at Broderbund and see if they have a solution. Here are the instructions they have given us in the help file. dave To export your Family File to GEDCOM: 1. From the File menu, select Copy/Export Family File (ALT, F, C). 2. Click the Save as type drop-down list and select GEDCOM (*.GED). 3. In the File name field, type a name for the GEDCOM file. It must have the extension .GED. 4. In the Save in fields, select the drive and folder where you want to place your file. 5. Click Save. Family Tree Maker displays the Export to GEDCOM dialog box. 6. Make your selections from the dialog box. Each of the options is described below. File Type The "Destination" field allows Family Tree Maker to check for special requirements of the program that will read the GEDCOM file. The table below will help you make a selection. FTW offers the most complete export; select it if you plan to later re-import the file into Family Tree Maker for Windows. If the program you are exporting to is not listed, choose FTM. Select this To create this type of file ANSTFILE Ancestral File of LDS Church NPS Temple submission to LDS Church PAF Personal Ancestral File, 2.1 or later ROOTS Roots II Roots III, Roots IV, Roots V, Visual Roots, or Family Gatherings FTM Family Tree Maker for DOS FTW Family Tree Maker for Windows When you make a selection in the "Destination" field, Family Tree Maker makes suggestions for the "GEDCOM" and "Character set" fields. However, if Family Tree Maker's suggestions are incorrect for your purposes, make your own selections. Whenever possible, choose Version 5 in the "GEDCOM" field; it offers the best export. When you don’t know which file type to use, or when you’re exporting to PAF version 2.31 or earlier, select Version 4. Options Select the Indent records check box to make the file more readable in a word processor. Some programs cannot read indented records, in which case this setting will be ignored. Select the Abbreviated tags check box to use abbreviations for the GEDCOM tags, instead of full names. 7. Now you must tell Family Tree Maker which information to export to your GEDCOM file. Family Tree Maker automatically exports most of the information, depending on your choices in step 6. If you have sources for this information, they are also exported. To see and/or change what is being exported, click Fields to export. When you click "Fields to export," Family Tree Maker displays the Fields to Export dialog box. Otherwise, click OK and skip the rest of these instructions. There are two lists in this dialog box. The list on the left, Fields to Export, contains all of the Family Tree Maker fields that you can export to the GEDCOM file. The list on the right, Fields in GEDCOM file, contains the GEDCOM tags to which the Family Tree Maker information is being exported. ("Tags" are labels for the different fields of information in the GEDCOM file. For example, the tag for occupation is "OCCU".) Note: The "Fields in GEDCOM file" list defaults to contain all of the GEDCOM-supported fields, based on your choices in step 6. If you do not want to export all of this information, you can remove items from this list. See the next step for instructions. 8. If you want to remove a tag from the "Fields in GEDCOM file" list, click the tag name and then click Don't export. 9. To export a Family Tree Maker field that doesn't have a GEDCOM tag opposite it in the "Fields in GEDCOM file" list, click the name of the field. 10. Click Export field. If there is more than one possible GEDCOM tag to which that information can be exported, Family Tree Maker displays the Change Fields dialog box. In this case, continue with step 11. If there is only one possible tag to which that information can be exported, Family Tree Maker automatically inserts the tag name in the list on the right, opposite the name of the Family Tree Maker field. In this case, skip to step 13. 11. In the Change Fields dialog box, click the name of the GEDCOM tag that describes the information you selected in step 9. 12. Click OK to return to the Fields to Export dialog box. 13. Repeat steps 8 through 12 until all Family Tree Maker fields that you wish to export have GEDCOM tags opposite them in the "Fields in GEDCOM file" list. 14. If you wish to change the mapping of a Family Tree Maker field, click it and then click Change field. If this button stays grayed out, the mapping for that field is preset and cannot be changed. 15. Click OK when you've made your selections. Family Tree Maker returns to the Export to GEDCOM dialog box. 16. Click OK again. Family Tree Maker creates the GEDCOM file. -----Original Message----- From: Melissa Jones <tsaritsa@ix.netcom.com> To: ARDREW-L@rootsweb.com <ARDREW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, November 02, 1998 11:59 PM Subject: Re: [ARDREW-L] What's a GEDCOM? >KESSAROSE@aol.com (KESSAROSE@aol.com) wrote: > >>Melissa or Davie or ANYONE else who can help.....I have family tree maker and >>recently attempted to send my Bordeaux file as an email attachment. 3. Right on, Melissa, I use Reunion on my MacIntosh and enjoy it immensely! I started with the original version of Reunion and have upgraded three times. I think those "other" computers owe the MacIntosh a great deal of praise, since our operating system has always been a type of "windows" format that wowed the competition into coming up with their own "Windows" version. The Reunion program became so popular among Mac genealogists that those "other" computers begged for a version of their own, and got it. Interesting turn of events wouldn't you say! Variety seems to be the spice of life! I sure do enjoy this chat room! Dorothy
