Rebecca, This is from the flyer sent to me by J. W. W. Available December 1998 ARKANSAS CONFEDERATES IN THE WESTERN THEATER by Dr. James Willis, Murray State University, Kentucky native of Drew County, Arkansas "The famous old Ninth Arkansas" fought nineteen battles and num- erous lesser engagements from Shiloh to Bentonville in the Western Theater of the Civil War. More than 1,300 men fought in the 9th Ark- ansas Volunteer Infantry, but only thirty-two remained standing for the final surrender in May 1865 in Greensboro, North Carolina. No other state had a larger porportion of military-aged men fight for the Confederacy than Arkansas. For every Arkansas Confederate soldier among the regular units who remained in Arkansas to fight west of the Mississippi, three fought east of the Mississippi -- one regiment in Virginia, the remaining units in the Western Theater. James Willis' book is the first to present a comprehinsive history of the Arkansas confederates in the Western Theater. This he does by presenting the regimental history of the 9th Arkansas Volunteer Infantry as a unifying strand that is representative of the Akransas confederate experience in the Western Theater. After crossing the Mississippi in August 1861, the 9th Arkansas fought in the Western Theater until its surrender as a part of the Army of Tennessee in May 1865. During the course of the Civil War, the 9th Arkansas met or fought with almost every other Arkansas Confederate unit present in the Western Theater. In May 1864, the 9th Arkansas joined with four other Arkansas regiments, some of which had already been consilidated, to form an all-Arkansas brigade under the command of Brig. Gen. Daniel Harris Reynolds. Accordingly, Willis divides his history into two parts; the first part focuses on the 9th Arkansas, and part two covers Reynolds; Arkansas Brigade. This book, exceeding 800 pages in length, will include 18 photographs, 12 maps, an annotated roster of the 9th Arkansas Regiment, and index. The text will be bound in a hardback cloth cover and protected by a dustjacket. $29.95 until 11/1/98 - thereafter $39.95 MORNINGSIDE BOOKSHOP 260 Oak Street, Dayton, Ohio 45410 Box 1087, Dayton, Ohio 45401 Phone (937) 461-6736 FAX (937) 461-4260 (800) 648-9710 (24-Hour Answering) Carolyn jhaisty@tcac.com

I asked my mom yest about the Belin family. All she could remember is that a Belin man m a Cruce woman. She said they lived in Warren. However, from the Corinth newsclip, it would appear that Mrs. W F Belin may have lived in the Corinth area re having the Sunday School class in her home. But, I swear, I just dont believe they ever did live at Corinth. Thought I knew everyone who ever lived in that community. But I could be wrong. Rebecca

Are there any history buffs around who know what affects the World Wars had on Drew Co. and/or southeast AR in general? Were any groups singled out or discriminated against due to their heritage? Is there a list of veterans or casualties of war listed somewhere for the county? I've never liked history, actually...not until genealogy forced me to learn. Now I wish I had paid better attention in school! :-D Isn't that the way it always is? January 23, 1908 page 2 col 2: Pine Bluff Jan. 22 - While seated on a curbing in front of a Main street store, which was crowded with shoppers at the time, Will Barham, 27 years old, of Cornerville, Lincoln county, pulled a revolver from his pocket and sent a bullet through his heart this afternoon at 3 o'clock. He fell over dead at the feet of Sheriff Ira Moore of Rison, Cleveland county, with whom he had been talking a few minutes before. The tragedy created great excitement. Barham came here 10 days ago and drank incessantly since that time. He is said to have been brooding over recent troubles. He was formerly in business at Wabbaseka, this county, and at one time worked at Monticello. Barham's body was taken home tonight by his step-father, Will Crook. No inquest was held. Barham's mother, two sisters, one of whom is a Mrs. Echols of Texarkana and one brother survive him. February 17, 1908 page 2 col 1: Monticello Feb. 16 - Circuit Court was in session here all last week. No important cases have come up for trial to date. The case of H.E. Glossup vs. the Iron Mountain railroad is set for Monday. Glossup is suing the railroad for $10,000 damages for personal injuries sustained last summer when he stepped off an excursion train returning from Dermott, while the train was standing on the high trestle over Bayou Bartholomew, it being in the night time. Hello All, Much as I enjoy being on this list, I find myself unable to continue for the near future. I have just signed a new contract for a large amount of new business and my main employee had her baby last night and has started her eight-week maternity leave. That leaves me to pick up the slack and leaves no time for play. I am, therefore, going to temporarily unsubscribe to the list, but I will be back after the first of the year. Nancy Barber
