Melissa, Walthall is not a very common name...so it will be well worth you time to try and make a connection to Major General Edward Walthall, who commanded a Division in Hood's Army of Tennessee. Conincidentally, General D.H. Reynolds Brigade was attached to Walthall's Division for period of time and may have been under it when Reynold's was wounded at Bentonville. Anyway, General Walthall was from Mississippi, and is buried there. I have a book somewhere that gives a brief biography of all Generals buried in Mississippi. Walthall's bio is in there along with his picture. I bought the book in a bookstore in Greenville a couple of years ago. I'll try to find it. If you want to read more about Walthall, his name is frequently mentioned in any history that give the details of Hood's 1864 Invasion of Tennessee and Johnston's defense of North Carolina. To Bill Brown: The title of the WWII Veteran's picture album is "The Men and Women in World War II from Drew County" Published by Southern Publishing Company in Camden, Ark. My sister Judy gave me the copy I have, and I seriously doubt if it is available...looks like a one time publishing event to me. Anyway, since you are in Dallas and can't get to the Drew County Library, I will be happy to copy and fax (as clearly as possible) the pages of the book that deal with the Browns. Frankly, the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Ed Brown lost both their sons in the war within a few months time is a big deal historically. It must have been heartbreaking for them...but what continually amazes me is how quickly communities forget these events...Certainly everyone in Drew County must have known about the Brown Boys being killed in action at the time it happened. I wonder if there were any ceremonies to commemorate their deaths, other than a funeral. Where did they live in Drew County...probably in a rural community since they went to Drew Central. Are there any pictures of them growing up, or in the Pirate annual...or was there a Pirate annual in those days? Anyway, looks like you have a couple of true war heros in the Brown family...if you learn more, please report. If you want me to fax you copies of the pages I mentioned, please call me at 602-483-7765 or leave your fax number on an e-mail. I will be gone to Tennessee on business the rest of the week, so I will not be able to respond until then. Good luck with your research. Dandridge......cpmmects to >Pocohontas/Martha Washington, James Spotswood, etc........ Caroline, I don't know. I am trying to unravel. All I was doing was listing names and connections that were written in the Fayette Co. History. Under Dandridge Family.....Wm. Cathey Dandridge, Jr. b l938, Thyatira, MS...parents Wm. Cathey Dandridge..l893-l971) & Velma Dickerson b. l904...grandfather Samuel Hamner Dandridge...m. Nannie Cahtey...ggrandparents...Wm. Alex. Dand. & Jary Jane Hamner.... Wm. Alex. (LITTLE DOVER) DANDridge b. Hanover, VA l8l2 d in Henr4y Co. VA l865...planter...slave owner...gggrandson of Alexander Spottswood of VA l7l0-l723.....goes through some way back there genealogy...but later it says.....Wm & Mary Dandridge had 9 children: Nannie Anderson, Mary Pocahontas, Emma 'Louise, Martha Washington, and Bessie Lee; sons, James Spottswood, Samuel Hamner, George Gilmer, and Walter Alexander.......I just assumed from this that the Dandridges were connected to Martha Washington/Pocahontas/ and Spottswoods..... I have no idea if the information is true or not.....Davie was just trying to find connections to various families, and this was in my run-off materials....... Some day, maybe as I said earlier...generations from now, someone much smarter than I can make these all fit the puzzle that I am sure had to be there with a link.....I'm just getting surer and surer that these Daniel folks of mine tie to MANY more lines than I ever expected, and they are very PROLIFIC.....perhaps I need to switch back to my HORNS and ONEALS.....I've been at a dead end on them for 20 years...........This would certainly depreciate my emails. :-) Beth Thurman or Terri Wolfe Monticello, AR 367-2701
This was found on a "People Search" on Excite and most likely is the one you are looking for Jo-Ann. Arthur L. Harvey 1065 Hwy. 82W Crossett, AR 71635 870-673-2173 Hope this helps, Carolyn
>Arthur Leon Harvey "in the county just south" of where she lives The county is Ashley. This is all I can say. He is a descendant of Theodore, Clarence, Wesly, John Henry, sons of Chris Harvey......his dad was the John Henry.....aunts were Ethel Donham, Cora Tubbs, Lottie Tubbs, Etta Velma ? , etc. They were in Bearhouse Twp. down around Midway. Leon Tubbs of Hamburg is Cora's son. He might know something.....should be in the phone book. Beth Thurman or Terri Wolfe Monticello, AR 367-2701

I still say that these names are all interlinked if enough sifting is done.......they may not be directly, but they are going to be collaterally......the Clays/Spotswoods/Dandridges/Fieldings/Lees/Lewises, etc. are all one mighty intertwined bunch in my gestimation. I wish I had the 3 different copies of the Lewis family history because they tie this all together. I'm convinced that this is where many of these common lst names are originating. As I said before, in my great-grandmother's family, the Lewis name was so important that many of the children carried it either as a first or middle name. These were prominent families, and even though the money and fame had dwindled by the time each generation added 15 to 30 grandchildren, the blood line was still there. Family connections to greatness are hard to release even after the presitige of money and position are gone. This is just a matter of unraveling, but it might take another generation.*smile* Beth Thurman or Terri Wolfe Monticello, AR 367-2701
Bill Brown: Here is what I find. No Browns in WWI. In WWII: Archie Brown, Cpl., husband of the former Virginia Knowles. Enetered the Army June 20, 1942. Trained at Camp Wolters, Texas. Served overseas in North Africa, Corsica and France. Awarded three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal. Discharged. Cecil F. Brown, Pvt. son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Brown, graduate of Minticello High School, entered the Marines in 1945. Trained at San Diego, Calif. James E. Brown, T-Sgt., son of Mr. and Mrs. George T. Brown, graduate of Monticello High School and A & M College, entered the Air Corps September 4, 1941. Trained at Keesler Field, Miss., Chanute Field, Ill, Jefferson Barracks, Mo., Maxwell Field, Ala., Helena Aero-Tech. Served overseas on Guam and Saipan. Awarded AP Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. Honorably discharged. When the new book was being done, the way veterans were included was by family submitting the name, record and a picture. I think that this may have been true of the first one, as certainly the number of men covered in these books did not include everyone from Drew County who served. My husband is a veteran of both Korea and Vietnam. We were urged by Judge Dale Hughes and his wife Betty who was behind the memorial program, to send in information on my husband. Dale Hughes was also an Air Force Colonel and we kept in touch over the years. (Betty says that my husband is the reason that Dale Hughes dragged her around all over the world, as he inspired Dale to join). Had we not submitted the information, John Stanley Haisty would not be in the new book. Veteran of two wars, but only listed under Vietnam, with a reference to Korea. I am willing to do a look-up for anyone, just let me know. Caroline, there were two James A. Daniel cousins. Do you know if this is the one called Whig (Wig)? Beth Thurman or Terri Wolfe Monticello, AR 367-2701
Thanks Beth, but those aren't my Harveys. The Dandridge line is mine however, but it was not James Spotswood, but GovernorAlexander Spotswood of Virginia that we came from. I have some of these lines back to the 400s B.C. Martha Dandridge Washington is not in the Spotswood line. There is a Martha Dandridge in my line and she was a sister of my ancestor, Elizabeth Dandridge. Martha Dandridge Washington is from a Dandridge - Jones marriage (no Spotswood). Sir Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740) officer of the Brittisih Army, served under Marlborough; wounded at the Battle of Blenheim; Governor of Virginia from 1710-22 after bringing the writ of habeas corpus to the Virginians from the King of England, who had previously denied it; deputy Postmaster-General of the Colonies (1730-39), and Postmaster of Pennsylvania; Major-General (1740); organized and led the "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe" over the Blue Ridge Mountaines for the first time, and was perhpas the most popular and renowned of the Colonial Governors of Virginia. He married in 1724, Anne Butler Brayne, Daughter of Edward Brayne. (Have Spotswood Line). One: Immigrant, William Dandridge I. Col. William Dandridge II married Unity West A. Capt. - Col. Nathaniel West Dandridge M. Dorothea Spotswood daughter of Gov. Alexander Spotswood 1. Martha Dandridge m. Archer Payne 2. Capt. Alexander Spotswood Dandridge m. Anne Stephen 3. Anna Katharine Dandridge 4. Mary Claibourn Dandridge 5. Dorothea (Dolly) Spotswood Dandridge married Patrick Henry (yes, the great orator) 6. Elizabeth Dandridge married Philip Payne after all the other children m. Dr. Nathaniel West Payne m. Catherine Wilson Alexander (8) Adelia Pendleton Payne m. Ezekiel Brooke Owens (OWENS line) F. Milton Hubert Owens m. Martha Caroline Hankins 4. Henry Monroe Owens m. Mattie Lou Miller b. Lucy Mae Owens m. Willie Phil Haisty (2) Carolyn Haisty II. (Colonel - Major) John D. Dandridge m. Frances Jones A. Martha Dandridge (1731), eldest child first married Daniel Parke Custis Married second, George Washington. We have had the Spotswood, Dandridge, Alexander, Payne, Callaway (Daniel Boone's daughter married a sibling of my ancestor), for over 50 years. If anyone ties to any of these lines, let me know, please. The names Nathaniel West and Dorothea Dandridge have been handed down through many generations. Carolyn
Caroline, et al: Do you have a Harvey line? Mrs. Ora Lee Harvey told me to contact her son, Arthur Leon Harvey "in the county just south" of where she lives (Monticello). If anyone knows this person, I would any information to help contact him. Mrs. Ora said that her son likes to "dig up bones" so he might be interested in talking with me (I'm hoping!). Thanks, Jo-Ann
Davie, this is really coincidental. I was trying to find a cemetery east of Somerville that was listed in a FAyette Co., TN cemetery book, and we wound up at a cemetery called Rehobeth. In it was a name I had not remembered seeing before....it was Cloyd. Also, there were Wrights & Wilsons because I had been going through OT and had seen the correspondence of these families and the Daniel line. Once I was there, I went through their county history book and found a Wiley Crook m. to a Chloe Daniel.....my mind said CLICK....I've just seent this CAT in Drew History.......I began to follow these names.....they all tie to Ruth B Hyatt and Chester Co. SC.......so many overlapping names.....the Wiley kept turning up and the Benjamin, the Lucy, the Frances, etc........It just has to be unraveled, but there is a Fayette Co.History, and it does have Wilsons & I believe Wright.......I'm a firm believer that the root is going to be the well-known and famous Lewis family of NC & before that VA.......too many w/Lewis names.......In my gggrandmother's Lewis Howell Daniel family, the name was repeated over and over.....in fact, I wonder if many of the Louis brothers of my ggrand. were not meant to be Lewis but just had some spelling problems bec. they were not aware of their names' origins....<smile> In Fayette, there was a Sherril FAmily that had and Annie Broughton m. to a Shannon Phillips.....Uriah m. Judith Lewis....child David Lewis Sherril.......child James Gardiner/Gardner.....think of all the lewis names in the Gardner line...... There were also a lot of Browns/Jones/& Carpenters....in fact a James Brown Carpenter.....son of Sideny and Rebecca Anne Watkins Clay Carpenter.....think of Juanita Gibson history and the Clay family/Watkins bunch.......I'm also getting convinced that Allen is another of the connections. There was a John Carpenter b betw. l8l0/l820 NC and d in Fayette abt. l847...m. to Martha "Patsy" Parker.... The Washington name ties into the Lewises, too. There was a WAshington Cartwright........I have a Wm Washington Wells.......mother was a Ford .... grandmother a Horn.....just recently someone posed that I have a Washington WM in my Horns....all from NC....near Rowan/Davie/Wake/Johnston /Edgecomb area....... lots of Daniel names too.......Daniel J. Harris Bailey Flavine Josephus Izard Cannon Wall Lucretia Stricklin Holloway Lucy J. Stricklin Higgason Tho. Washington CrooK....there's taht Washington name again. Now , I know George was a Washington...but Martha was connected to the Lewises.....as was George in a round about way....I still say the Lewises are the common denominator.....along with the ANDERSONS Koonce Jarmon Ruth Belle, dau. of Elijah Hyatt.....check out the drew co. Hyatts......all from Elijah in Chester, SC....same bunch....just different directions......I'll bet some letter writing was going on.....most seem to have wound up at Rough and Ready or the vicinity....after several years......some of these Daniel folks took a time out in Marshall Co., MS in Holly springs or over in St. Francis Co, AR, but all seem to have reunited in Drew..... just hunches...nothing conclusive, but there is something very connected going on here...... Richard Thomas Cross Richard Deberry Burrell Monroe Cross Wm Beverly Crowder Isabelle Crowder Betty Spence James Wilson Rhea Belle Morrison Cross George Overton CrossAnthony Webster Crowder What I am doing is running off some of the names on some of the pages I ran off.....Richard Ransome Gwyn....nticed some Daniel connections in Drew Co. to Gwyns.....Humphrey Kibble & Sarah Thurmond Gwyn Margaret Matild Bruster Thomas Meredith Seaborn Basil Haddad Ola Lillian Anderson Sara Wood Anderson Polly Penny Caroline Penny Alexander McNeill Moore Co.,NC WM. >From GOODSPEEDS: James A. Daniel, who has long been connected with the agricultural affairs of Drew County, Ark., was born November 19, 1837, being a son of Dudley D. and Emeline (Curtis) Daniel, who were born in North Carolina, June 1, 1804, and August 6, 1816, respectively, their marriage taking place October 13, 1831. In 1851, they removed from North Carolina to Arkansas, and became wealthy citizens of Drew County, the father being worth, at the time of his death, in 1870, about $50,000. He was a worthy citizen in every respect, and was deeply interested in the progress and development of Drew County, contributing liberally of his means in its support. He was a Whig in politics, and socially a R. A. M., belonging to Lacey Lodge No. 46. He is still survived by his widow, who is now seventy-three years of age, and resides in Monticello with her daughter, Mrs. E. A. Pruit. Both were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and became parents of the following children: Margaret (wife of W. D. Killiam), James A., Eliza (wife of George Spencer), Amanda (wife of Benjamin Pruit), and Mary E. (wife of Dr. Thomas Pruit). James A. Daniel was educated in the schools of Monticello, but in 1861, full of enthusiasm for the land of chivalry, he enlisted in Company I, First Arkansas Regiment, Monticello Guards, but was afterward sent on duty to Virginia, where he remained ten months. He was afterward transferred to the Army of the Tennessee, under Albert Sidney Johnston, and the first important engagement in which he participated was Shiloh, where he received quite a severe wound. After remaining at home on furlough for about one year, he joined the First Arkansas Cavalry, after which he was in the battles of Pine Bluff, Poison Springs and Mark's Mill, being wounded in the right leg in the last engagement. After remaining at home for eight weeks he rejoined his command, and was with Price on his raid through Missouri, participating in nearly all the engagements in which this famous general took part. He was captured at Little Osage, and after being kept overnight in the prison at Fort Scott, he was taken to Warrensburg, from thence to St. Louis, and thence to Johnson's Island, in Lake Erie. He was released at this place and returned home, where he was married in 1807 to Miss Lucy Nunn, a native of Louisiana, and a daughter of S. B. Nunn. They had one child, Dudley D., who died when ten months old. The mother of this child having died, on September 15, 1869, Mr. Daniel wedded his present wife, a daughter of Henry and Eliza Walthall, his wife Ida, being a native of Virginia. A family of five children has been born to them, but three died in infancy, and one on November 1, 1888, and another on the fifth of the same month, aged eighteen and fourteen, respectively. By industry and good management, Mr. Daniel has become the owner of 465 acres of fertile farming land, and has 125 acres under the plow. He has held office of justice of the peace, is a Mason, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Carolyn
