    3. Concerning Gates Camp The camp in Possum Valley was on the Knowles Crossing Road above 16th Section Cemetery. My parents lived there for a while. The sawdust pile may be rotted by now and there was also a pond there that we called Big Well Pond. There is an old railroad tram in the woods behind our house that ran to Gates Camp. The tram was still noticeable the last time I was down there. Rodger Dale Loveless now lives in our house. Bobbie ----------

    3. Harold, I find Mary Ellen Sullivan born October 21, 1900, died April 2, 1943, buried at Rock Springs. There are lots of other Sullivans buried there. Do you want all of them? Which McKenneys are you interested in? Ray McKenney's family? Do you have Gene and Darlene Sullivan in your family? Wayne Bostian? A Bostian who married a Farrar? Let me know how many names you want and I will send to your private e-mail address. Carolyn jhaisty@tcac.com

    3. Thanks for the reply. I'm sort of new to all this and was not sure that such information existed. Anyway, I am interested in the Sullivan, Bostian, Turner and McKenny families. If there are too many of them, one I specifically would like to find is Mary Sullivan who died in 1940 or 1941 in Pulaski County but I believe buried at Rock Springs. 3. I don't know when the Gates camps started....won't even go there because I just don't know. However, I do know they lasted into the 20's because my aunt Edna Bowden Wolfe was not b. until l9l6. Therefore, she would have been six years old in l922, the normal time for children to start to school when I was little; therefore, I assume this was probably true before. Judging from her talk, she was at least 7 or 8 upon moving to the Prairie. The camps probably started in the teens, but they were still around in the early 20's.....now, as to how much longer, I cannot say. I know there is a book about the beginning of the town of Crossett that tells some of this history, but I don't have a copy. I took some time to look in OLD TIMES, Melissa. On P. 78 rdea talks about a Shiloh Camp. This is probably the one Aunt Edna meant when she said down around l6 Section. It goes on to tell about l00 moveable houses, a school, well, store, post office, and an ice house. Cabins for two men l6 x l2..&..a hand w/ a family, 2 or 3 of the cabins placed together. When the timber was cut, cabins were loaded onto a flatcar and moved....camps were actually portable communities....life not too different fr. home except people were forced to live more closely together..........goes on to mention a Gates Billet Camp at New Hope..........so I'm not sure just which one Aunt Edna lived in , but I know she was at the Line Camp last. p. 79 says that the Company was sold to the Crossett mill, owned by another Gates , as well as a Crossett and some others, in l924.........according to Dr. C.C.Curry. This might be an indication as to when the camps closed, but then again, they could have continued under the Crossett & Gates bunch in Crossett, AR. In BEYOND BARTHOLOMEW: The Portland Area History p. 98 .....interview w/Alcus Burney the section on LINE community Gates Lumber Co. fr. Wilmar in Drew Co., "had camps and trams everywhere," .....The trains would bring the logging crews to town(assume he meant LINE) for lunch at the stores. p. 123......interview w/Alvin Bates "logging camps were built every five miles down the line" well ponds were dug to supply the steam locomotives w/ water This is also the section where rdea stated what Mr. Bates said abt. the l925 to l930.........He might have just been speculating since the book states that he was not born until l925.......he was probably guessing based on old stories he had heard....... Most likely the camp ended around l924 when Crossett took over....Aunt Edna would have been abt. 8 years old...would seem abt. the right age to believe an owl was a panther....*smile*

    3. INDUSTRIAL AND SOUVENIR EDITION OF THE ADVANCE Monticello, Ark., Tuesday, December 17, 1907 Page 8, columns 2 & 3 The Gates Lumber Company The Gates Lumber Company was organized in 1890, 17 years ago, and was among the first of the large mills to locate in the great short leaf yellow pine belt of South Arkansas. At the time they came here the industry in this sort of lumber was in its infancy and the value of the timber at least in this section was not realized. The entire western and southern portions of Drew County as well as a large part of many adjoining counties was practically one unbroken forest of the finest yellow pine in the world. A few small mills manufactured the lumber in very limited quantities for local consumption and the mag- nificent timber which now can rarely be bought then was almost value- less. The founder and present head of this company, Col. A. H. Gates, a native of Vermont, who with his brothers has been prominent in developing the lumber industry of the South. In addition to their mill at Wilmar, they are largely interested in the Crossett, Fordyce, Eagle and Grant Mills and the Jackson Lumber Company at Lockhart, Ala. It is safe to say that the Gates Lumber Company owns one of the most complete plants to be found anywhere. The capacity of the mill is about 90,000 feet or six cars of lumber per day. They employ some 400 hands and their payroll is from $12,000 to $14,000 per month. The mill includes dry kilns, planer and all the departments that go to make up the most improved and up-to-date sawmill. They have shed room for almost 5,000,000 feet of lumber. The company has 25 miles of railroad, 4 locomotives, 60 log cars, 1 pile driver and 2 log loaders. They also have their own machine shops, doing all their own repair work brass castings, etc., and have their own fire protection and electric light plant. The company's water works system is supplied by a 4-inch well, 400 feet deep, which furnishes an unlimited quantity of the purest and best water. This water in addition to being used about the mill is furnished to the high school and to many of the residents of the town, and is shown by chemical analysis to be pure and wholesome and well adapted to either household or manufacturing purposes. The company has a Stand- ard Underwriter's pump of 500 gallons capacity and 6-inch cast iron water mains, further augmented by a 20,000 gallon steel-framed tank 80 feet high. Their electric light plant comprises 18 arc lights and 250 incandescents. The Gates Company originally owned about 53,000 acres of timber land in this county. More than half of this has been cut now, however, and at present they have some 25,000 acres or about 200,000,000 feet of pine timber. It is estimated that this is about eight years' supply for the mill. In addition to the above, however, they have a large amount of hardwood and it is probable that when the pine is exhausted the plant will be converted into a hardwood mill. Their lands lie mostly in the western and southern parts of the county. Five years ago they bought the holdings of the Drew Lumber Company by which deal they acquired about 20,000 acres of timber and extended their territory to the extreme southeastern part of the county. The officers of the Gates Lumber Company are A. H. Gates, President; C. C. Gates, Vice-President, and A. W. Judd, Secretary. It is the largeest industrial concern in Drew County, having a capital and surplus of $822,000 and is a source of considerable pride to our citizens. The company has never been troubled by any serious labor disturbances and has had a uniformly prosperous career. Note: John Byron Haisty mentioned in an earlier post was born in 1909. In the picture of a Gates Camp School, (his first school) he appears to be about 6 years old. That would make this school pre-date 1920.......around 1915-1916. If anyone had family attend a camp school around that time, I would like to hear from you. Rebecca's book "Beyone Bartholomew" says that the Drew Co. camps were from 1925-30. Perhaps the camp in the picture was in Ashley Co. I don't know, but it had to be before 1920. Carolyn jhaisty@tcac.com

    3. Line is right on the Ashley Co./Drew Co. line. It is just above Trafalgar in Ashley Co. Some call Trafalgar Sardis....name of the church still there is Sardis. Dr. Alcus Burney was from this area......It is north of Troy and south of Snyder. Maybe this will help some. The camps would have been in the 20's because Aunt Edna married in l932, and she was only l6 years old. It is mentioned a bunch in rdea's Bayou Bartholomew and Beyond.
