I am having the most trouble with my father's paternal line. Here's what I have so far: My father is TERRY CLOYD RODGERS, son of RICHARD C. (Champin?) RODGERS and FRANCES ELEANOR MILAM RODGERS. My grandfather was born 12/1/1881 in AR; died 2/1960 in Drew County. The first problem I have, of course, is that the spelling of the last name is inconsistent: my grandfather is listed as RODGERS in the 1900 census and ROGERS in the 1920 census. In the 1900 census, he and his brother, HENRY LEE RODGERS, were living with their mother, ELIZABETH "Lizzie" RODGERS. She was born 10/12/1861, the daughter of STEPHEN HENDERSON GRUBBS and ELIZABETH MARGRETT JACKSON GRUBBS, who moved from Talbot Co, GA to Drew County in 1854. She married EUGENE RODGERS, but I don't know where or when. My father thinks that Eugene's full name was MILTON EUGENE RODGERS and that he died about 1884. He has no idea where or when Eugene was born. He thinks Eugene's parents might have been RICHARD RODGERS and ROSIE WELTH (or something like that.) He's not real sure about these names and doesn't know anything else about them. I did not find any likely candidates in the Drew County census records for 1860, 1870 or 1880. I am at wit's end here. Can anyone help? Terry Kay (Rodgers) Wheeler twheeler@telemedtoday.com

    3. It is very likely that gg-grandmother Lizzie Plunkett-Loveless is buried at the 16th section cemetery. Marjorie Knowles has a map of both the 16th and Valley/Ozment cemeteries. I have never seen them but I think there are several plots in the center of the 16th that there are already burials. These plots are near the center/back of the cemetery and my grandmother, Clara Loveless-Glennon, once told me there were a lot of Loveless' buried there. Several years ago, when it was common for us poooooooooooor folks not to be able to afford a tomb stone of any kind to put up a heart of cypress board which would last for many years. I can remember when these old weather worn boards lined and spotted that section of the 16th. There were even a pine knot or two for markers. Thus, someone was mowing the 16th one summer and gathered all those markers up and threw them over the back fence. I once heard my Grandpa Glennon talk about digging a grave at the 16th and un-earthed some casket handles in an area of unmarked graves. Regarding those cypress boards - rdea, did you know that at the burial mound where our uncles & aunt, John, Enoch, and Obedience are buried, there are still some remnants of cypress markers there? Almost certainly, Uncle Johnny Knowles put them there since he and Aunt Alice Ozment-Knowles have a still-born baby boy buried there too. Uncle Johnny kept the site up until he died. Good to hear from you cousin Melissa - the good along with your reminders of rootsweb. BW

    1. [ARDREW-L] "most wanted" Drew County line?
    2. Melissa Jones
    3. Hi, everyone, Since it's been pretty quiet on the list lately, I thought we could try having a "most wanted" posting session, sort of like our "roll call" that we had sometime back. Who is your "most wanted" Drew County research subject? That is, what Drew County person or line that you are researching gives you the most fits....the one where you have hit a brick wall? Maybe if we can find others working on the same "brick wall" subjects, we can work together and puzzle them out. For me, my Drew County stickler is Elizabeth Plunkett who married John Wesley Loveless (probably in Tishomingo County, MS) a few years before they moved to Drew County ~1858. I have not been able to determine with absolute accuracy her parentage, and though "Old Times" gives the names of Elizabeth's father (James Plunkett of AL) and some siblings, I haven't yet been able to find proof of these connections. Also, I have never been able to determine where Elizabeth Plunkett Loveless is buried. My guess is in 16th Section Cemetery beside her husband John Loveless (who has a stone), but again, I don't know that for sure. It was only this summer that I learned when she died (December, 1905), and that was from a letter written by Ida Belle Grubbs to her cousin Archie Loveless (thank you, cousin Robbie!). Anybody else have any "toughies" to post to the list? --Melissa

    3. Everyone, ARDREW-L was created for the purpose of sharing information related to Drew County research. When we use ARDREW-L to make off-topic posts, we are not being respectful of Rootsweb. Instead, we are using their bandwidth and server space to transmit and to store messages which aren't related to the topic of the list. Please, let's respect our hosts by keeping our messages on-topic. Things that are off-topic or of interest to only a few people can be sent in private e-mail. If you don't mind getting the off-topic posts, send me a message with your name and e-mail address, and I will make this list available to those who want to share non-genealogical messages via private e-mail. 1. [ARDREW-L] my Dad
    2. He's My Dad To Each Staff Member of this Facility: (forward from a friend in a clinic) As you pick up that chart today and scan that green Medicaid card, I hope you will remember what I am about to say. I spent yesterday with you. I was there with my mother and father. We didn't know where we were supposed to go or what we were supposed to do, for we had never needed your services before. We have never before been labeled charity. I watched yesterday as my dad became a diagnosis, a chart, a case number, a charity case labeled "no sponsor" because he had no health insurance. I saw a weak man stand in line, waiting for five hours to be shuffled through a system of impatient office workers, a burned-out nursing staff and a budget-scarce facility, being robbed of any dignity and pride he may have had left. I was amazed at how impersonal your staff was, huffing and blowing when the patient did not present the correct form, speaking carelessly of other patients' cases in front of passersby, of lunch breaks that would be spent away from this "poor man's hell." My dad is only a green card, a file number to clutter your desk on appointment day, a patient who will ask for directions twice after they've been mechanically given the first time. But, no, that's not really my dad. That's only what you see. What you don't see is a cabinetmaker since the age of 14, a self-employed man who has a wonderful wife, four grown kids (who visit too much), and five grandchildren (with two more on the way) - all of whom think their "pop" is the greatest. This man is everything a daddy should be - strong and firm, yet tender, rough around the edges, a country boy, yet respected by prominent business owners. He's my dad, the man who raised me through thick and thin, gave me away as a bride, held my children at their births, stuffed a $20 bill into my hand when times were tough and comforted me when I cried. Now we are told that before long cancer will take this man away from us. You may say these are the words of a grieving daughter lashing out in helplessness at the prospect of losing a loved one. I would not disagree. Yet I would urge you not to discount what I say. Never lose sight of the people behind your charts. Each chart represents a person - with feelings, a history, a life - whom you have the power to touch for one day by your words and actions. Tomorrow it may be your loved one - your relative or neighbor - who turns into a case number, a green card, a name to be marked off with a yellow marker as done for the day. I pray that you will reward the next person you greet at your station with a kind word or smile because that person is someone's dad, husband, wife, mother, son, or daughter - or simply because he or she is a human being, created and loved by God, just as you are. 3. Hi Cindy....Drew County did not have a hospital until 1929. It was the mack wilson hospital. This went out of business in 1950 when the Drew Memorial was built. I have no idea if the old records were transferred to the new hospital. Or they may have been taken by the doctors who ran the hospital. Before that time 1929, some of the doctors had clinics in their offices which served as hospitals. Perhaps you could write a letter to the Drew Memorial Hospital, Monticello, AR 71655, and ask them if anyone knows what happend to the old records. No, it was not that uncommon for ch to be taken from parents at that time if the household was too indigent to care for the ch. And I know of cases where a parent would simply leave a child at an orphanage in the dark and slip off. Linda Hill has done a lot of research re Bottoms Baptist. I am fowarding this to Ardrew in hopes Linda will get in touch with you. best regards, Rebecca ---------- From: Johnnie and Cindy Adams <adamseden@eritter.net> To: rdea@seark.net Cc: tsaritsa@ix.netcom.com Subject: hospitals in drew county Date: Thursday, December 03, 1998 7:42 AM Hello again Rebecca: I found out yesterday through the Red Cross in Jefferson County that the possibility does exist that back in the early 20s, hospitals and medical personnel in that area had the red cross insignia on vehicles and also they wore arm bands with the same insignia. We have ruled out the possibility that The American Red Cross took my father in law from his parents and placed him in Bottom's Baptist Orphanage. However, after some consideration, we think it might be possible that he was taken by some medical personnel and placed in Bottom's, probably with the help of some legal agency. Can you please tell me of the hospital's that were in that area (if you know) during the 20s and if any of them still exist. Also, have you ever heard of the removal of children from their homes back then by law enforcement and or medical personnel. It probably seems that we are grabbing at straws here, but we know for a fact that the children were removed from the home, it is just a matter of finding out by whom. Or, perhaps, have you ever heard of the parents just giving children away to hospitals/orphanages simply because they could not support them any longer? It doesn't bother us if this happened, we just want to know if it did. The odd part of this "giving away" theory is that the same agency who took the two older children left behind a smaller child (age 2), and the mother was also pregnant at the time. We appreciate whatever you can give to us in the way of information. I believe that I will also send a copy of this to Melissa so it can be posted. Thanks again, and hope to hear from you soon.
