The reason I say it's embarrassing is that I'm a pretty fair book collector (at least, book accumulator!), and the name Charlie May Simon doesn't ring any bells. But it's very neat to find another author from Drew County! --Melissa

    3. >Beth, a copy of the obituary will be in tomorrow's snail-mail. Anybody else? Thanks very much , Paul. Every since I learned this famed children's author was from Drew Co., I have wondered where she lived and to whom she was related. No one to whom I mentioned this seemed to know any particulars except they thought she was from the Selma or Florence area, but no one really remembered her or knew her history. I would appreciate any links to her present Drew Co. roots that you have. I teach English, and even though my students are in junior and senior high, most remember Charlie Mae Simons. I believe authors become more real if we can connect them with something familiar to the students. Thanks so much for your information and help. Just let me know if I can do anything in return for you. Also, how long did she live in Drew County? Thanks again, BETH

Lived in the North Oak Grove community, attended the Baptist Church there during the 1940-50's? I have a 1910 (I think) census listing them with a Caroline Brown listed as Mother, Pennington Twp, Bradley Co. Bettye Hogue Bond

    3. [this info compiled by Lynn White from old land records. all previously published info [by me] was based on old newspaper accounts of recollections of Arthur Jolley and from an old letter written by same. Lynn's info dispells the myth re Ozment Bluff being settled by James and Alfred] Rebecca ......... About the Ozment land at the Bluff. I remember us talking about it when you were writing your book. I had got a chance to view the abstract in George Pacific's possession and discovered that the Ozment's weren't the first owners. The patent was 'issued' to Thomas W. Chowning on November 26, 1844. Which means he 'entered', with 'cash entry' the land a few years earlier. He may have never lived there, he owned other land west of the river, several miles. He sold the land on 1/10/1854 to Eli, John A., and Joseph Ozment, sons of James H. Ozment. I remember you told me that on the land you own that James' name was not on the patent either, but that of his sons. James H. received a patent on the land at Gee's Landing in 1844. He was living there, with the field cleared in November of 1841 when the government surveyor came along and surveyed the township. His son-in-law, Ben. Franklin was living north of him with his field already cleared also. Its interesting that Glenda Glennon once wrote a brief history of Possum Valley and in it she stated that the name Gee's Landing came from the command to horses to 'turn right, gee. How little people know of the area history. When James' sons purchased the land at Ozment's Bluff, or I should say some time after, it does appear that James moved up there. He sold the land, called Gee's Landing, to a man whose sir name was Gee. (This deed is not recorded however Mr. Gee starts paying tax on the land.) All records, even Robert C. Ozment's profile in "Goodspeeds" state that the James H. Ozment Jr. family came to AR several years before Alfred did. Perhaps at least 20 years before. This may be one reason for the marriages of the first cousins. There is no record of Alfred ever living or owing land even close to the Bluff, only folk lore. In the year 1854 the Ozments purchased several tracts of land, Alfred purchased his, at the Ozment/Valley Cemetery, 200 acres then also. Prior to these land purchases they were all living at the Gee place and McCarty and Barber places. I once received a letter from Lamar White about this 'sudden' purchase of land by our Ozments. I think he wrote they may have come into some money from the death of James H. Ozment Sr. back in TN. I'm not certain on this, I'll try to find the letter and let you know. I once copied, by hand, the Harris Bible records, when I find it I'll pass it along. Its interesting that in the abstract of the Gee Place, George Landsdale Place, now owned by Sonny Jones, that James H. Ozment Jr.'s will is included. It was not in the abstract for Ozment's Bluff. By the way I still have the family tree chart you drew for me, wish I would have had it when Mama White was living. I could have tied together the people she would tell about. Becky did you ever hear of William O. and Susanna K. Ozment being separated? Mama White told me this and records I have found this year seem to bear it out. Lynn ----------

    3. Hope y'all don't mind another Knowles post today. This is very exciting for me! Eleanor, I have the two youngest girls of Richard and Elizabeth reversed from what you show. Don't know if I made a mistake when I copied the census record, but I have in the 1860 census of Veasey Township, Drew County: Martha A. Knowles, age 6, born AR Loucinda Knowles, age 1, born AR I'm thrilled to have more info. on these women, and will look online to see what else I can find in LA and TX for them. The Winston County, MS connection is also interesting, as this was where William Knowles married Drucilla Teer. I feel sure that Richard John Knowles and William Knowles were brothers, but has anyone proved this "without a doubt"? Or do we just go with preponderance of evidence? --Melissa EleanorCol@aol.com (EleanorCol@aol.com) wrote: > 1 Richard John Knowles b: Abt. 1820 in Alabama >. +Mary Elizabeth Jordan b: Abt. 1824 in Pickens County, Alabama m: Abt. >1844 in Winston County, Mississippi > 2 Mary Elizabeth Knowles b: Abt. 1845 in Arkansas > 2 Sarah Jane Knowles b: Abt. 1850 in Arkansas > 2 Lucinda Frances Knowles b: Abt. 1854 in Arkansas d: 08 July 1906 in <snip> > 2 Martha Ann Knowles b: May 1859 in Marion Township, Drew County, >Arkansas d: 1913 in Ludington, Beauregard Parish, Louisiana Buried: <snip> >.... +Andrew Anderson Ozment b: 12 April 1854 in Veasey, Drew County, >Arkansas d: 23 June 1918 in Brookland, Sabine County, Texas m: 03 July <snip>

Ozment, brother of Alfred, was in Bradley County before he went to Drew. Here are some of my notes: ""BRADLEY COUNTY FAMILY HISTORIES", BY THE EAGLE DEMOCRACT, 1992-93, ARTICLE WRITTEN BY JUDGE DAVID A. BRADHAM: "By land surveys made of Bradley County lands during the period 1826 to 1830 are shown "fields" on the plats made at that time and by these "fields" the name of the owner or possessor is shown.... the following names are shown on these early land plats: ... OZMENT ..." "The roster of the first of the county officials of Bradley County, 1840-42 are given as: ... Coroner - James OZMENT, who served one term and was succeeded by D. McLaughlin ..." Unfortunately I do not have all of the descendants of James H. Ozment in my file. I would bet that your John Ozment and Artelia might be descendants of him. I also don't know anything about John Hickman either. Sorry. Eleanor
