    3. The estray records were kept by the local jp. when stock was found estray, it was up to the person finding the animal to notify the jp and record a description. if the animal were not claimed within a certain amount of time, the finder could legally claim the animal. one reason it was done was so they would not be accused of stealing. the claiment also had to pay the finder for feed use. the estray records are useful as they record who was where when. I posted on Ardrew last year about the estray records I found at the Drew Archives. they are very old and date back to when Lincoln Co was still part of Drew. 1. Re: [ARDREW-L] Appraisements
    2. Dear Jann: I knew that my class in Anglo-American Legal History would come in handy sometime! An "estray" is just fancy old English for "stray." When an unidentified animal was found wandering around, it was deemed an estray. It was then examined and valued and the information was posted for people to see. If the animal wasn't claimed within a certain period of time by its owner, it became the property of the person who found it ("finders, keepers"). Sometimes there was a tax or fee paid to the local authorities based on the valuation of the animal. Hope this helps. 3. Hi, everyone. Happy New Year! I received this query today about the BEASON family in Drew County. Does anyone have information on this family to share with Pam? Please contact her if you do, or if you post it to the list, I'll make sure she gets it. Thanks bunches. Karen Groce wgroce@netdoor.com ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 01 Jan 1999 16:05:27 -0800 From: Pressney <pressney@concentric.net> To: wgroce@netdoor.com Subject: Attn: Drew Co query Hi. I'm interested in the Beeson surname. My gr-gr-grandparents, Jonathan and Elizabeth Steward (or Stewart) Beeson (also spelled Beason) lived in Drew Co in the 1850s. My gr-grandfather was John Stewart Beeson, born in Perry Co AL in about 1832. In the 1850 Drew Co census, Jonathan and Elizabeth lived adjacent to Jane Beeson, apparent widow of Jeremiah Beeson, whom I believe to be a brother of Jonathan. I'm told that Jeremiah died in 1848, presumably in Drew Co. Are there any Beasons listed in the books you have available? Thank you very much. Pam Pressney
